Simon recalled Vexa’s words about receiving a mission from the Night Sovereign to obtain a Winter Monkey.
Back then, Simon did not believe Vexa’s words in the slightest.
He thought she was lying or that she was exaggerating.
However, it all made sense to him now.
Sunless’ favourite food was monkey brains.
And the Night Sovereign requested for a Winter Monkey.
Everything now made sense to Simon, and the reason for the Night Sovereign wanting a Winter Monkey is because of its brain.
Sunless wanted to eat the Winter Monkey’s brain.
Winter Monkeys were rare and not easy to capture, and since monkey brains were Sunless’ favourite food, it was obvious that the brain of a Winter Monkey would be like a rare luxurious delicacy to her.
’How did I not think of that connection back then? Why did I dismiss it so easily?’
Simon knew that he was not to be blamed since very few people would make such a connection.
Instead of wallowing in this shocking realization, Simon finally controlled his emotions.
His shaken expression slowly transformed into an expression of calmness.
His eyes radiated a cold and calculating light that even machines should not have.
A few seconds later, his bloodied lips parted open to speak.
"Since you know that I killed Thorgan, why did you not capture me since? Why did you bother hiring a Soul Mirror Demon into the clan and going through all that stress?"
Simon wanted to know the answer to this question because it made no sense for Elder Xyron to have been brought to the Shadowgrave Clan when Sunless already knew everything.
Sunless tapped the chin of her mask for a few seconds, then she shrugged nonchalantly.
"Because it was fun. I wanted to see what you were going to do and what your plans were."
Simon frowned.
"So, it was all a game to you?"
Sunless shrugged.
"I guess you can say that."
Simon shifted his gaze to the kneeling Grave Lords.
"And let me guess, you were the one that told Black Midnight and the other powerful and important clan members to not interfere with our escape... Because it was all a game to you?"
Sunless folded her arms and glanced at Black Midnight before looking back at Simon.
"Yeah. I was curious you see. This was my chance to observe you more closely than before."
She raised a finger.
"You can use the ability of the Devourers but you don’t have the bloodline of a Devourer for some reason."
She raised another finger.
"Those black flames of yours."
She raised two more fingers.
"Those black wraps of yours and that sword."
She raised another finger.
"Your high physical strength and battle prowess."
She raised the sixth finger.
"Your unique mental energy... And so many more actually."
She lowered her hands and looked at Simon.
"I’ve seen all of these things about you, but my instincts still tells me that there’s an even deeper secret inside of you."
"A secret that is the foundation of your talent and power."
Sunless stopped, then she released a deep sigh.
"Unfortunately, you have crossed the line and I have no choice but to end this charade. I’m honestly disappointed."
Simon narrowed his eyes.
"Because I’m going in the direction of the Herald’s corpse?"
Sunless shrugged once again.
"Who knows. And even if that’s the truth, do you think you have the ability to possess such a thing? Do you even know the value of such a thing? Can you fathom it?"
Simon did not respond, causing Sunless to scoff.
"Just because you heard about the Herald’s corpse from those two spy brats, your greed got the better of you and see your current situation."
"You could have escaped, Blackmoon. You could have grown even stronger and shown me more unique things about yourself. But no, you wanted something that’s beyond you."
Simon glanced at Merath and Jorra who had shaken expressions after hearing Sunless’ words.
It was obvious now that they had been exposed, and worst of all, it was the Night Sovereign that knew their secret, not any low ranking weak demon.
Simon looked back at Sunless.
"I guess I made the right choice since you would have still stabbed me in the back in the future if I decided to escape."
Sunless tilted her head slightly.
"Hmm... I guess you do have a point."
Simon glanced at the three kneeling Grave Lords, then he shifted his gaze back to Sunless.
"Zaglur told me that you planned on using the Devourer’s blood essence to make the Shadowgrave Clan a kingdom. If you were willing to watch me escape, does that mean that the Devourer’s blood essence was not that important to you?"
Sunless chuckled softly.
"So that Daegrin told you such a thing. He was so greedy and annoying. That’s why I wanted him dead."
She shook her head slightly.
"Well, maybe I should have controlled myself and shouldn’t have killed him so quickly."
Simon narrowed his eyes, but he didn’t comment on her words. He decided to change the topic and get more information from her.
"What’s your main goal then? Why do you want the Devourer’s blood essence?"
Sunless smiled beneath her mask and tilted her head slightly.
"But I’ve told you already, Blackmoon."
Simon’s eyes flickered with confusion, causing Sunless to shake her head softly.
"I want to kill the sun."
Simon raised a confused brow.
’Kill the sun? What sun? Who is the sun? What is she referring to? Is it a god?’
Due to his experience and knowledge, Simon had an idea that Sunless might be referring to a god or maybe a being that was even more powerful than the gods he knew of.
He decided to ask.
"What or who is this sun? There’s no sun in the demon realm, so what are you talking about?"
Sunless’ lips curled up slightly beneath her mask.
"Don’t worry about it. It doesn’t concern you."
Simon frowned, but this didn’t bother him. He didn’t actually expect Sunless to tell him.
He just wanted to try in case she eventually did.
He was about to speak, but Sunless suddenly pointed a finger at him.
"Like I said earlier, the one thing I cannot forgive you for is not bringing me back the Winter Monkey. I was really looking forward to eating his brain."
In the next moment, an arrow made out of shadow shot out of Sunless’ finger.
In the blink of an eye and before Simon could even react, the arrow pierced his right shoulder and to Simon’s disbelief, it separated his right arm from his shoulder.
"I feel better now." Sunless said with satisfied tone and smile.
