The System Inventory had its limits, with the only known one, thus far, being its size limitation. Or rather, the items she could fit through the hole leading into the System Inventory.
Summoning the System, she stretched it out to its maximum size, which was approximately 16 by 8 inches, if she had to guess.
Hilda caressed her chin thoughtfully, glancing between the System and the several sacks of eyes, which were around the size of your average potato sack.
After comparing the sizes and thinking it through, it became clear to her that it would be either impossible or extremely difficult to fit an entire sack through the screen. She had to think of another way.
She pondered her options, then sighed and decided to approach the problem in the simplest way possible — even if it was a bit boring. She knelt down beside one of the sacks and pried it open. Afterwards, she began emptying its contents into her Inventory.
’At leasts the eyes fit through,’ Hilda mused.
...
[System Inventory: Metal Rods (x20), Predicament Eyes (Scoundrelx30)]
Hilda whistled at the amount of eyes. ’30? That’s quite the hefty amount for a group that was robbed.’
Granted, this was the sum that included the eyes she had Elias gift them yesterday.
’But no matter.’
With a wave of her hand, she dismissed the System. She then glanced down at the empty sacks and left them be for the time being as she went to look for a hammer to cover her alibi.
The moment she found one, an ingenious idea popped into her mind. Returning to the empty sacks, she knelt down and picked them up. Afterwards, she went to the supplies in storage that closely resembled the shape of Predicament eyes and other similar-sized objects.
Once she made sure each sack weighed similar to how they all weighed initially, she tucked them back where she found them and pushed back the objects used to hide them.
Hilda smirked. ’This should delay them by at least a second or two.’
With the hammer in hand, she left the storage room and proved to the guards. And with that, she left with what she came for without any hints of suspicion. A successful heist.
...
"Huh? You’re leaving already?" Roxy sat up, staring at Hilda, who was sitting at her table. "Don’t you wanna stay until the end of the exam?"
Hilda shook her head, then came up with a witty excuse. "I would love to, but I have this meet-up that I must go to. You see, I have this charming group and a charming lady I must return to before night falls."
"Lady?" Roxy quirked an eyebrow. "You have a lady?"
Hilda chuckled, then began to describe Nadia’s appearance.
Roxy widened her eyes.
"Ah, I remember her!" She exclaimed. "I recall her standing by you very closely when our group stumbled onto yours, though only vaguely. But you two do look close. Did you meet her, like how I met Beatrice?"
Hilda mulled over this question for a brief moment. Now that she thought about it, there were some similarities between the two meetings.
They met in the presence of Predicaments. They ran from Predicaments. And because of Predicaments, their companion was left in a precarious state. Though that last point could be considered ambiguous or incorrect depending on how you viewed her spar with Nadia.
She let out a hearty laugh. "Haha, something like that. She und I have a... complicated relationship. But she is a charming lady. "
"Is that so... so, where is she? I take it must be somewhere rather safe for you to have left her on her own for hours."
"She’s currently residing in that warehouse. Und from experience, it seems safe enough—"
"T-the warehouse?!" Roxy interrupted with concern, having only now realised what warehouse she was referring to. "I-is it alright to leave her there? Aren’t you worried they might do something to her?"
Hilda shook her head. "She’s capable enough for me not to babysit her, und they only had a problem with me, so it shouldn’t be much of an issue to let her stay."
"I see... I guess if she’s capable by your standards, then she must be worth something."
Hilda rested her chin on the back of her finger before tilting her head slightly. She then blinked with an amused twinkle in her eyes. "You could say that."
When Roxy was about to open her mouth to say something about that, a man suddenly bursted into the room.
"Roxy! They’re stirring awake!"
Roxy tilted her head slightly.
"Awake? Who’s awake?" She asked, confusedly. Though that only lasted for half a second as her brain finally clicked it together, "Oh, them!"
Roxy watched as Hilda stood up from the table first.
"I’ll be taking my leave now." She smiled.
"Oh? You don’t want to meet them? I think having their saviour be one of the first things they see might make them really happy."
Hilda shook her head. "Unfortunately, I’ve spent enough time here already. My lady is the type of person who acts on impulses easily, you see. If I’m not back soon to see her, I’m afraid she might get all jumpy und try to go look for me.
"Und who knows when I’ll be able to leave, after their thanks und thank yous~..."
"I suppose you are right," Roxy chuckled. "Would you like me to walk you to the exit?"
"Nein, it’s fine~ I believe meeting your awoken members takes more of a priority than that."
"Alright, then. Just to let you know that, since you know where my camp is, you can bring over your group and lady to ours for the remainder of the exam."
Hilda’s smile softened at that.
With her back turned to Roxy, she waved goodbye before swiftly leaving. "I’ll be sure to keep that in mind, Miss Rutherford. Auf Wiedersehen, meine Freundin."
Once Hilda left, Roxy also got up. Led by the man who brought her the news, she made her way over to the medical ward. And when she did, she entered with a sombre expression.
