The Chronicle of the Last Bloom

4.8 — Return to Present: Waking

I let the memory settle, there, at the edge of that long, unanswered night — not because there wasn't more to it, but because the rest of it belonged to a different telling, a different evening, further along in whatever it was we'd been quietly building between us across the years since I'd first pulled her back from wherever she'd been headed. Tonight belonged only to the part I needed to sit with, watching her sleep in the gold, unhurried light of the World Fragment, her hand still loosely laced through mine, the pale gauze pooled soft and gleaming across the grass beneath her.

She stirred, slightly, sometime later — not waking, not yet, but shifting closer in her sleep, some old instinct drawing her nearer to warmth the way a plant turns without deciding to, the way I once turned, wordless and patient, toward whatever light reached me. I felt the small furrow leave her brow as she settled, felt her breath even back out into something slow and deep, and I stayed very still, unwilling to be the reason she woke a moment before she was ready to.

I thought, watching her, of the girl in that tower — brilliant enough to map the entire architecture of the world's oldest question and still standing outside it, looking in through glass she couldn't find the hinge to open. I thought of how long she must have carried that unanswered question, dressed up in a hundred careful disguises, until carrying it alone had finally become heavier than simply setting everything down.

I thought, too, of my own centuries of stillness, and understood, not for the first time but perhaps more clearly than I ever had before, that we had each spent an unbearable stretch of existence standing just outside the exact same door — she through brilliance too vast for the question to survive being answered, I through silence too complete for the question to ever be properly asked — and that neither of us had found our way through it alone.

Her eyes moved beneath their closed lids, some fragment of dream passing behind them, and her hand tightened, very slightly, around mine.
