A Guide to the World of the Between
Welcome to the Chronicle of the last bloom. Before you wake on the gray plains, you'll need to understand the laws that govern this existence. There are no gods here — only pressure systems. There is no life — only echoes of what was once Something.
When a soul dies in Something (physical existence), it wakes in the Between — a vast, inanimate, gray continent, built enormous by design.
On arrival, every soul is a silhouette: faceless, featureless, a shape of pale light that cannot be touched by any other. Through patient effort, stubbornness, or the memory of love, a soul can slowly begin to build an identity — a rough physical form, hair, features that reflect who they are underneath. But even then, they remain silhouettes in one crucial sense: age, precise features, and fine detail stay difficult, sometimes impossible, to make out.
The storyline takes place here.
The Between is not a place of passive rest — it's a system searching for balance. The way Nothing interacts with souls is through Missions.
The mechanic: A Mission doesn't arrive as a message on a screen. It arrives as a sensation, a physical pull — a hook sinking under the sternum, jolting the soul awake. Once accepted, the world bends, and the soul is pulled into a World Fragment: a pocket of temporary reality where the senses — touch, taste, warmth — become real again.
The logic: Missions are always individual and solitary. Even when two souls find themselves inside the same Fragment, their objectives are bound only to their own essence and their own Contract. Fulfilling these objectives — which sometimes look arbitrary — is what keeps Something and Nothing in balance.
The narrative interface: To the characters, a Mission feels like a deep intuition, an instinctive knowing that simply arrives in the mind. As narrators, we'll render that using a format that echoes a game interface (e.g., Objective: Be happy) — a way of making the system's will legible to you, the reader, without breaking what it actually feels like from the inside.
There is no standard unit of measurement for power in this universe. No soul — in the Between, in Something, or in Nothing — has an energy bar or a level that can simply be compared to another's. A soul's strength is a physical pressure on reality, not a number.

Still, for the reader's benefit, we'll use the Vaelira Scale. Vaelira, the Witch of Infinite Time, struck a Contract with Nothing itself to create a measuring instrument calibrated to her own perception. As narrators, we know this is an artificial convenience — but the characters themselves genuinely rely on the tool that bears her name.
The scale runs from 0 to 13. A "5" is already dangerous to an ordinary soul. A "9" represents power capable of reshaping entire Fragments.
Anything beyond 13 registers simply as silence — a magnitude the scale, and most beings, simply cannot process.
In a world where silhouettes cannot touch each other, and trust between strangers doesn't exist by default, Contracts are the only "technology" of relationship. They are binding agreements, enforced automatically by the laws of the Between — once accepted, reality itself ensures they're honored, with no need for honor or honesty on either side.
Now that you know the rules, remember: the Between is patient. It is not infinite. Every exception carries weight, and the system always, eventually, corrects its own errors.
In the Between, power isn't something you possess — it's something you project. It's an extension of a soul's will and history over absolute nothing.
Rings and Domains: The power of the strongest souls manifests as rings of colored light, specific to each of them — the gold of the Absolute I, the cold blue of the God of Destruction — radiating outward from the chest. When that power expands, it creates a Domain: a temporary territory where the gray nothing is forced to reorganize itself. Inside a Domain's reach, the ground regains texture, the air gains weight, and souls — who normally cannot touch each other at all — regain the ability to feel warmth, pain, and physical contact.
The Law of the Strong: Though Nothing's system is indifferent — it neither rewards nor punishes morality — in the Between's own social hierarchy, the strong simply have power over the weak. A powerful soul can "edit" a weaker soul's reality, or impose its own architecture over the void, turning the Between into its own throne room.
The universe divides into "pieces" of reality that souls can obtain or draw on as resources:
With this foundation, you'll understand the Between for what it is: a place of borrowed textures, where the strength of your soul literally determines how real the ground beneath your feet is allowed to be.
