The Chronicle of the Last Bloom

MOVEMENT FOUR — The One That Never Cools

4.1 — What Wren Saw First

"This one," Eremos said, and something in his posture shifted, a faint discomfort settling across his shoulders, "belongs to an incident most of you were not present for, though Wren was, and I think it's fair that she tell this part, if she's willing."

Wren, still standing near the edge of the room, straightened slightly. "It was the merchant," she said. "The one who tried to cheat me out of a debt, a few years back. Elowen mentioned it once, on the balcony, calling it the first time she'd seen him properly angry. She wasn't wrong that it frightened her. She just never knew how much worse it could have gotten."

"I remember standing still," Eremos said. "I remember the room going cold, the way Elowen described. What none of you saw, because I managed, that day, to hold the door shut before it opened all the way, was how close I came to not managing it."

"There is a version of my anger," he continued, "that is not grief-shaped, the way the God of Destruction's fury is grief-shaped. This one is simpler, and in some ways more frightening precisely because of how simple it is. When someone wrongs a person I love — not the world in some abstract sense, not a distant injustice, but someone specific, someone standing directly in front of me, harmed by someone else standing directly in front of me — something in me catches fire, and the fire does not go out. Not in a minute. Not in an hour. Not, left unchecked, ever."

"We named him," Vaelira said, taking over, since Eremos had gone quiet again, "the night we finally understood what we were looking at. It took some debate. Flora wanted something gentle, because she couldn't bear the idea of him carrying a frightening name even in this state. Elowen wanted something dramatic, because Elowen always wants something dramatic. We settled, in the end, on the Unquenched, because it was the one name that felt honest without needing to also feel cruel."

4.2 — What He Carries

"In power," Eremos said, "the Unquenched is considerably more contained than the God of Destruction, and considerably more dangerous in a narrower, more precise way. He does not seek to end everything connected to the wrong. He seeks, with total and unwavering focus, the specific person or persons responsible, and pursues them with a stamina that has no natural limit — he does not tire, does not hesitate, does not accept any resolution short of the wrong being fully and personally answered. His strength is not raw destruction so much as unbreakable pursuit. I have felt him track a single guilty soul across weeks of searching without once losing the thread, without once needing to rest, because rest, to him, would have felt like abandoning the fire before it finished burning."

"The ring that marks him," he said, "is a deep, banked orange-red, like coals that have stopped visibly burning but have never actually gone cold — the kind of fire you could still, if you were foolish enough to test it, burn your hand on, however calm it looks from a safe distance."

"I am careful with him," Eremos said, "more careful than with almost any of the others, because he is the one most likely to be summoned by something genuinely small — a slight, a careless unkindness, nothing that would ever justify the scale of what he's capable of delivering. I have learned, over the centuries, to recognize the earliest edge of him rising and step away from whoever provoked it, physically, before the door has any chance to open. It does not always work. It worked, that day with the merchant, only barely."
