Lilyth

The sensation of being temporarily blind and deaf was one of the most horrifying experiences of my life. Seemingly, time lost all meaning, and the only things I knew were agony and darkness. But slowly, my senses began to return.

The first thing to return was something I didn't realise was gone - my sense of touch. I could feel something heavy stomping around, the cool of the stalagmite I was gripping and someone's hand on my shoulder. Then my sight began to come back, and I saw a large, blurry, undulating shape barrelling through the cavern, and something flashing next to it. I tried to blink the blurriness away, but then I remembered my eyes no longer worked that way. So… all I could do was wait.

I didn't even need to see Lilyth to understand what that horrible head-splitting screech had likely done to her. I had bigger worries on my mind, like the giant Kisamzo that burst out of the cavern floor. The creature was maybe six metres long and a metre thick. Unlike the small ones Lilyth killed, it had muscled hind legs and two pairs of long, thin arms. The worst part, however, was the tendrils running along the monster's glistening black snake-like body. They were all muscle and covered in tiny barbs. I had a nasty feeling they could easily strip flesh from bone.

‘And there is the angry momma,’ I heard Ren mutter.

I brushed it off as I had no idea what the hell she was talking about.

Caei was the first to act. She threw a [Blood Lance] at the Kisamzo. It pierced its side, causing it to let out a shriek that both Taros and I capitalised on. I sent out a [Lesser Abyssal Bolt] which hit the creature on the inside of its mouth, while Tee managed to cut off several of its tendrils with a crescent-shaped [Ice Scythe] spell, all of which caused the creature to let out more loud shrieks.

The monster began barrelling towards me, so I decided to take a page out of Lilyth's handbook, charged towards it and, almost at the last second, slid underneath it, my weapons raised. My swords bit into the Kisamzo's flesh, and our opposing movements caused me to inflict a grievous slash on its belly. The monster roared angrily.

My elation from this was brief, however, as the same force that helped me with the attack also screwed me over when my swords caught on what likely was the monster's ribcage and were ripped from my hands. I could briefly feel my arms pop out of their sockets, causing me to wince from pain.

Note to self: Don’t do that again, I thought as I heard Siren and Yuki-onna clatter to the ground somewhere behind me. At least this time around, I won’t find one of them in my stomach.

Fearing getting crushed, I started rolling away from the monster, but just as I was getting up, agony flared up in my right shoulder and arm when dozens of barbs bit into my flesh. My armour stopped some of them, but it wasn't nearly enough. I tried to suppress a scream that was building up in my chest. Tried.

I fell to my knees holding my badly hurt arm. I felt the creature shift towards me, so I began to scramble away, but I was slow. Too slow. Luckily, I also wasn't alone, and the creature was hit by a crossfire of magitek carbine shots and shadow bolts from one side, and a barrage of arrows and rock spikes from the other. The Kisamzo reared back, which gave Taros enough time to swoop in and help me get away.

Vae brought me over to Caei, who immediately began to heal me.

As she did, I looked around to see what was happening. Deirdee and Rennie were doing their best to flank the monster and pepper it with shots. Taros soon joined them. I looked towards where Lilyth was and saw that she was desperately trying to get up, supporting herself on one of the rocks with one arm and holding her stomach with the other.

‘Go help Lilyth,’ I told Caei the moment I felt my flesh finish knitting itself back. ‘She’s badly hurt.’

Caei swore and leapt towards our wife. Meanwhile, I rejoined the fray, peppering the monster with ranged attacks and doing my best to locate my swords.

Lilyth

The relief that Caei's spells brought was almost divine. I didn't want to mention it, but the damage I sustained was severe enough to cause the damage indicator to pop up and show my entire body in deep crimson.

If I actually had [Enhanced Acoustic Processing] on, I would be dead.

‘Thanks, babe,’ I smiled and summoned my knives.

‘Are you about to do something very stupid?’ she asked in a tired voice.

I looked at the Kisamzo. It didn't seem to be seriously hurt despite being covered in wounds, one of its forelimbs being broken, and, most importantly, many of its tendrils missing. That last detail gave me an idea.

‘Very,’ I finally answered.

‘Let me guess… You are going to ask me to hold your beer?’

‘No,’ I laughed. ‘This goes one step further. So Caei… hold my vodka.’

A mix of bewilderment and terror began spreading on her face, but I couldn't waste time on explaining what a big deal vodka was in my culture. Instead, I activated [The Swiftness of the Wind] and started to charge at the monster, aiming for a spot where I would be able to reach its side. Caei must have realised what the hell I was planning because I heard her scream “No!”.

Watch this, my love.

Gripping my knives tightly, I leapt upwards and forward when nearing the creature and managed to plunge one of my knives deep into its flesh near its hindquarters. Kisamzo roared, sending another lance of pain through my body, and began to buck, so I quickly turned my other knife into a piton as well. I used both of them to lift myself onto the creature's back and began climbing my way towards where I thought the thing had its skull.

Needless to say, the Kisamzo wasn’t happy with my efforts, but it couldn't focus solely on me as my party members kept it busy. Still… each of its roars hurt like a motherfucker and threatened to knock me unconscious. But… I had to do it, and seeing it grab Taros and throw vaer against one of the cave walls and then backhand Deirdee as she tried to help the demigod only intensified my efforts, as this thing reminded me too much of Sanguine Behemoths and Rot Hounds.

In the end, I didn't make it to Kisamzo's head. I was badly hurt, and the creature went into a frenzy when I got past its front limbs.

Hopefully, it will be enough.

I let Luna clatter to the ground, gripped Sol with both my hands and began to channel [Jolt] through it. As I hoped, the blade amplified the effects of the spell, and Kisamzo began to spasm from electricity now coursing through its body.

Now… I just have to hold on.

And so I did. I kept my grip on Sol despite my senses beginning to fail again. I could hear my companions shout something, but their voices were distant and indistinct. My vision started to dim again, but I pushed through it. The monster's bucking intensified as Sol grew white hot, and my fingers began to melt. I still didn't let go. Finally, the Kisamzo caught on fire, and I started to get burns from just bouncing against the monster. At some point, I even stopped feeling pain. There was just me, Sol and the monster locked in a fiery embrace that threatened to consume us both.

I only let go once my mana ran out, and the monster’s thrashing finally threw me off. I was unconscious before I hit the ground.

‘That fucking idiot!’ I heard Caei shout as we watched our fucking idiot of a wife fly through the air.

We stopped attacking the creature once Lilyth began to electrocute it, as the monster's movements became too erratic. Caei just finished using the quick break to heal up Taros and Deirdee. Tee turned out to be almost as sturdy as Lilyth due to being made of water and godstuff, and, luckily, Deirdee was only lightly hurt. This was especially important given how much medical attention Lilyth would need now.

The worst part, however, was that the monster survived my wife's ill-conceived attack. It was genuinely hard to believe that, given how its body was now half-molten and on fire, but it was still moving, though it seemed that all fight had left it, as it was waddling towards the hole it entered the cave through.

‘We need to focus our fire on it!’ I shouted. ‘Caei! You know what to do.’

‘Wait!’ Taros shouted and handed her a healing potion. ‘It’s a greater one. Was keeping it aside for a special occasion. I guess this counts.’

I was grateful for that. We were pretty low on mana potions again; we were down to two lessers, so that healing potion was a demigodsend.

I turned my attention back to the ailing Kisamzo, and we started throwing everything we had on it. It was Taros’s pressurised stream of water that finally did it when the spell pierced the monster’s skull and exited the other side. The creature began to convulse and then finally collapsed.
