‘It was worth waiting for,’ Ren purred as she rolled off my naked form. ‘I really needed that.’

I was shocked she was so willing to ride me, but as she put it, it wasn't like she hadn't tried it before with Leera, and she would gladly pay the favour back once she was back home, since she had “proper tools” for that there.

‘Once again, sorry we couldn't give you more attention these past few weeks,’ Caei said.

‘It is partially on me,’ Ren sighed. ‘The negotiations…’

‘We are not letting you out of our sight again,’ Aki murmured, her head resting on Caei’s ample bosom.

‘Mine,’ I wrapped my hands back on Rennie and pulled her back on my body.

She didn't protest, so I kissed her and hugged her tightly to my body.

‘Yours,’ she kissed me back and began licking her way down my body, but before she could get to the fun parts, Aki and Caei pounced on us with a loud “Ours”.

Eventually, our most delicious tangle of limbs and boobs began to drift off.

I also really needed that,’ I thought as Caei softly snored in my arms. And so did they.

A few hours later, I was woken up by a really faint buzzing. Initially, I assumed it must have been some bug and wanted to go back to sleep, but the sound was… off. Too regular. Too static. I activated [Enhanced Acoustic Processing] and did not like what I discovered. The sound remained in one place just outside the window, and it was accompanied by a downward movement of air. It reminded me of…

… An exhaust.

Now fully awake, I leapt to my feet, startling my poor lovers. I activated the [Cloud Form], and Nyx’s suit materialised around my body. Looking through the window, I saw a skull floating outside. White pinpricks of light shone in its eye sockets, and four ribs were attached to the occipital bone in an X configuration, likely to serve as ailerons. The whole thing appeared to be propelled by a jet of air emitting from the hole where the spine normally would be.

A drone?

Without thinking much, I launched a [Shadow Bolt] at it, breaking the window and shattering the skull into a million pieces.

Try getting free porn now, fucko.

My mind started to race, analysing the situation.

Ignoring questions from the girls, I looked outside, but couldn't see anything. It was too dark, and my [Darksight] was not good enough. However…

‘Ren!’ I loudly whispered. ‘Look outside the window and tell me if you can see anyone.’

‘W-why?’ she asked.

‘Just do it!’ Caei hissed at her, likely realising trouble was afoot.

Ren grumbled, but complied.

‘There is no…’ she began, but quickly caught herself and pointed to some far-off point. ‘A man! Standing on the roof of the barracks!’

That was all I needed.

‘Go wake the others!’ I shouted. ‘I’ll go after him.

I activated the [Swiftness of the Wind] and leapt through the broken window.

‘But we are on the third floor…’ I heard Ren say in an incredulous voice.

Oh. Oh shit.

Mantopter

When his drone was destroyed, Corporal Zheim Ra-Halli knew he was screwed.

How the fuck did the Kitsune even know it was there? That thing operates at ten decibels. Are her ears that sensitive?

His training kicked in, however, and despite his growing terror, he began packing his gear and getting ready to run away.

Then someone was somehow able to point him out from the window despite it being three in the morning on a cloudy night, and the Kitsune leapt out of the window, starting to do some crazy acrobatics in the air and honing in on him. That's when screwed was upgraded to fucked.

Realising there would likely be no escape, Zhein took out his radio with a shaking hand.

‘Vesper, this is Mantopter. I’ve been made. Performing the Final Rites.’

‘Roger that, Mantopter,’ came the response. ‘Godsspeed, son.’

Fucking asshole. He thought as he dropped the radio to the ground and crushed it with his boot, while taking out a small liquid-filled glass capsule hidden inside his rank insignia and putting it into his mouth.

Hopefully, it won’t taste too bad.

Suddenly, a jet of liquid shot out of another window, and Mantopter realised he wasn’t just regular fucked. Oh no. He was getting the limited-edition deluxe turbofucked package.

Not going down without a fight.

Zheim looked at his carbine. Based on what Strickland said, it could work on the Kitsune but likely not on the Acid Fae. Maybe explosives then? But then again, both of them have somehow survived a Corefire grenade explosion.

Still, Mantopter had his gear to dispose of, so the grenade it would have to be.

He unbuckled it from his belt and just as he was about to pull the pin out, there was a bright yellow flash as something large landed next to him and hot, searing pain spread up his arm.

It was the Kitsune. Now desperate, Mantopter clawed at where the pin was seconds before, only to find nothing but air there. Dumbfounded, Zheim looked down and saw that his right hand was missing.

Fuck.

That was when the acid fae landed next to him, and he knew that the time for that ultimate resort had come.

For the Convocation, he thought as he bit on the glass capsule.

Lilyth

I really need to start thinking my actions through, I thought as I began plummeting towards the courtyard.

Remembering the last time I was falling from a great height, I cast [Fist of Wind], aiming my clenched hand towards the ground.

To my surprise, instead of slowing me down, the spell actually propelled me up.

Whoa! Is this due to the [Cloud Form]?

My body was less than happy about the G-forces involved, but the experience gave me an idea. Hoping for a much gentler experience, I used the [Gust of Wind] spell to propel myself forward.

That's some Wuxia bullshit, I smiled to myself as I started feeling the rush of being able to fly.

I couldn't enjoy it for long, though, as I heard the fucker transmit something on the radio.

‘Vesper, this is Mantopter. I’ve been made. Performing the Final Rites.’

‘Roger that, Mantopter,’ an all too familiar voice responded. ‘Godsspeed, son.’

Strickland!

Then this “Mantopter” destroyed the radio and…

Did he just put something in his mouth?

A horrible feeling what it was appeared in the back of my mind, but I couldn't focus on it as that fucker reached for a grenade on his belt.

FUCK.

I summoned Sol to my hand, cast [Jolt] on it and propelled myself towards the cunt with another [Fist of Wind]. I have no idea how the fuck I managed to cut off his hand. I was aiming for his torso while landing, but it sure looked badass. Moments later, Phosi landed next to us.

Now we’ve got him!

But then, I heard a sound that almost echoed through the night. A crunch of glass from the man’s mouth.

Cyanide pill!

‘Go get Sav!’ I shouted to Phosi as I grabbed Mantopter by one of his arms and tried to open his clenched jaw.

Maybe if I induce a gag ref-

‘Wh-’ the Sconryoll began to respond, but I cut her off.

‘FUCKING NOW!’

The man crumpled to the floor like a puppet cut off from its string, so Phosi darted off without a further word.

I lifted him to a half-sitting position and continued my attempts to make him vomit the poison, but the man began convulsing and moments later, with a final gasp for air, went completely still.

‘FUCK!’ I shouted into the night.

‘It definitely wasn't cyanide,’ Sav panted after making it down to the courtyard. ‘It takes minutes to kill a person, not seconds. You were right to try to get me.’

Ren and Caei got to me moments after Mantopter’s death - the former having used the [Spider Climb] spell to run down the wall and the latter having flown down. They helped me carry his body and gear down to the courtyard, which was slowly filling with people.

‘Probably Dread Queen's Kiss,’ Ren said. ‘A very rare and extremely potent poison. A few drops are enough to kill a grown man in seconds.’

‘I didn't ask for it to be named like this,’ Ere told me in a sleepy voice. ‘In general, I am not a huge fan of poisoners since they just love using my name in their “craft”.’

She grumbled something else and disconnected.

‘Define “very rare”,’ I sighed while rubbing the bridge of my nose with my fingers.

‘It comes from a plant that only grows in the North,’ Rennie explained. ‘I have heard about there being a small plantation of it somewhere near the Holy City, but basically I have never seen it with my own eyes.’

The North again.

‘What’s going on here?!’ Sergeant Milten, seemingly always on duty, shouted.

I just showed him the corpse of Mantopter.

‘H-how did he get in here?’

‘We don’t know,’ I answered. ‘I’d rather not tell what happened over and over, so let's wait for the Viscount.’

‘Roger that,’ the guard smiled wryly and began shouting orders to clear the courtyard and actually get the noble down here.

As we waited, we started to go through the man’s gear. Even before we had carried the body down, we had Ren carefully carry the man’s grenade to our room and hide it in one of our bags of holding. There was no fucking way we would let the Viscount get his hands on them. The carbine and ammo for it we gave to Caei since she already had a vague idea how to use it, and Sav promised to give her some extra pointers. Aki initially suggested giving it to the medic, but she shook her head, citing already having a magitek gun and a staff.

The rest of the man’s gear was of even greater interest to us. Food rations, a Neverending Canteen and the two biggest finds - two intact drones, no control device for them though, and three extra radio batteries along with a mana crystal-based charger for them. Phosi said we would have to get the right crystals for it, which gave us an extra reason to go to this Kirsee. Maybe she would be able to help. All in all, a great haul.

‘I think we found the observer,’ Sav said. ‘This all strikes me as shit you would carry on extended recon missions with limited resupply options.

‘So this is the bastard who caused the explosion yesterday?’ the Viscount, who arrived moments before and just silently let us look through things, asked.

‘Possibly,’ Savri answered. ‘No detonator on him or anything. Then again, it could have been triggered by his radio. We’ll never know for sure.’

‘How did you find him?’

I told him the story without any embellishments, the part about the man wanting to detonate a grenade on the barracks roof proving nearly too much for Milten.

‘I’ll call the glazier in the morning to replace the window in your room,’ Wilhum sighed after we were done. ‘Once again, I have you to thank for helping my city. And the corpse of this “Mantopter” lets me show the people that we are hunting down the monsters who threaten them. I know you already laid claim to it, but keep his gear. We wouldn't be able to use it without your guidance, anyway. What's your next step?’

‘The same as before, I think,’ Aki said. ‘We'll go to see this Kirsee. But no more of that “sneaky” bullshit. We’re going in force.’
