Caeileera
‘This is Leianna,’ Nyx introduced the flowery kimono-wearing Kitsune.
‘Hiya,’ the fox girl waved.
Nyxie explained that Leianna agreed to come and stay here and act as a sort of littermate to our Jelly.
‘Lady Nyx explained your special circumstances to me, Lilyth,’ Kitsune explained. ‘I understand that suddenly becoming… something you were not might be a difficult transition, and with no one to guide you through it… I can't imagine how bad it must have been for you, especially with your body being what it is.’
‘And before you ask,’ Nyx chimed in, ‘as someone who designed that body… It being made of slime matters less than you think it does. Basically, as you know, the way your body behaves is mostly based on your subconscious. Meaning, well… you need to stop thinking of yourself as a slimeling. Treat the composition as an asset rather than the defining trait. To make things simple: You decide what your body is. If you want your fur to be real, it will be as real as it gets, meaning if you think of yourself as a Kitsune, that's what you will be. The building blocks are there. I mean, as far as I understand, when you were hunting on Varlia, you did it in a way no different from that of a Kitsune. Or do you honestly think Slimes hunt the way you did? Other than that one bird you’ve just straight-up eaten whole.’
‘I’d ask, but I really don’t want to know,’ Rennie muttered.
I agreed. Lilyth didn't go into details about her hunting exploits, and by the sound of it… I was really happy she didn't.
‘We’ve abandoned the old ways of hunting,’ Leianna smiled. ‘But I understand you reverting to them. Gods, sometimes it is VERY hard to resist the lure of a good bird nest. But it shows that by the time I am done with you, you really will be one of us. Now let’s go meet the others!’
What others?
Deirdee
She never thought seeing a bunch of fox people would bring her that much joy, but there she was, giddy like a schoolgirl because Nyx invited a group of Kitsune performers to take part in the harvest festival. One of them, Qaric, was this absolutely stunning grey-furred specimen of man, who, for some reason, Deirdee couldn't quite understand, was walking around wearing just an open vest with no shirt underneath. His muscles were certainly stunning, but wasn't the man cold?
‘Ah, you must be the dancer that Lady Nyx mentioned,’ he said to her with a roguish grin once they were done with introductions. ‘Pleased to meet ya.’
‘L-likewise,’ she said, for the first time in her life feeling shy… and hot.
So hot.
Suddenly, someone swatted the man on the head with an open hand, and the hotness disappeared. The man also seemed plainer.
‘Qaric, I told you not to fucking do it,’ a brown-furred woman named Meei growled and turned to her. ‘I apologise for him, Deirdee, was it? The jackass figured out how to turn the musk of his body more… irresistible to some non-Kitsune women.’
‘He fucking what?’ Nyx shouted, and lightning crackled across the sky.
The rest of her party was also staring daggers at Qaric, who suddenly seemed very, very small.
‘Oh, boy,’ Meei mumbled. ‘Now you’ve done it.’
Nyx snapped her fingers, and the man disappeared.
‘So that's how it looks from the outside,’ Lilyth muttered.
‘He can try his tricks in the realm of Fire,’ Nyx sighed. ‘Gin’ig will send him home once he learns his lesson.’
‘That’s certainly giving Firefox a new meaning,’ the Jelly chuckled, likely making some joke only she could understand.
‘Are we still welcome, Lady Nyx?’ Meei asked, ignoring Lilyth.
‘I don’t see a reason why you wouldn't be. As I understand, he was a new member? At least I don’t remember him from your visit last year.’
‘Yes. Joined a few weeks ago to replace Farron after he decided to settle down. Thought he would behave.’
‘Then all the more reason not to hold his action against you. If you tolerated his behaviour for years… that would be a different story.’
‘Thank you for your understanding, my Lady,’ she curtsied and turned towards Deirdee. ‘We suddenly find ourselves in need of a dancer. You interested?’
She was.
The Red Mask
Andermon was wasting its potential, Halveck found. Dozens of principalities, city-states and petty kingdoms with rulers too glued to their seats to realise that what they were doing was only harming them in the long term.
The County of Enjor, for instance. A guild of brilliant gunsmiths was operating there, but yet they could only produce limited amounts of weapons as Baron of Brekstadt, being a bitter enemy of the Enjorlian Countess, chose to direct all of his metal exports to Vaklville, where they were wasted on farming tools, bathtubs and relics like swords.
And that was despite the fact that only half of those exports would likely be needed for those mundane things. Why should brilliant gunsmiths from Enjor not be able to practice their art because the Baron of Brekstadt chose to only export his metal to Vaklville instead, as he and the Enjorlian Countess were bitter enemies? Wouldn't it have been for all three cities to work together instead, and their resources directed where they would actually be the most useful?
Such waste was everywhere, and if the rulers couldn't see it, then he would make them see it. Andermon had to be reunited, and its people needed direction. Without that… the waste would continue.
Unfortunately, it would seem that Halveck couldn't rely on anyone to help bring about the ordered world. He first put his hopes into the New Vandarian Kingdom, but those fools left old feudal divisions intact, and the membership was voluntary. What's worse… They were repeating the errors of the Old Empire by choosing leaders based on blood rather than merit.
Halveck then went to the Church of Light, as they were so close to unifying the continent. But no. They didn't. They preferred their status quo despite controlling the currency. The longer he served in the Temple Dragoons, the more he realised that the Church relied on something even worse than blood… connections. Why else would a traitor like Arcarius be placed in command over him if it wasn't for him being a pupil of Baerniel Zi-Vexhin?
And now, thanks to the idiocy of Augustus Fucking Vanek, any chances of Halveck ever rising to a position of power were definitely gone.
He had mostly given up on being able to achieve his goal through the Church, but the insult still stung. Back when they were in Dan-Hem, Halveck didn't care about the village elder or this “Aki” one bit. Uses could have been found for both of them, but their deaths were irrelevant to him. That mistake had proven itself to be very costly. His career was pretty much over, and the girl had grown to be a major thorn in his side.
No. His use for the Church was at its end. He still had some resources within it, but a lot of his former agents had turned away from him. They would pay for it in due time, as would all who opposed him.
Luckily, Halveck has been preparing for a day like this and had his agents everywhere that mattered.
Well… not everywhere. The Red Masks had almost no presence thanks to Kojiro Yamaoka. The man’s plan to take Ror-Bhyk by force turned out to be pure foolishness, and while a setback, it did have its upsides. Halveck only allowed it because Kojiro delivered almost the entire clan to him on a silver platter, so perhaps it was still a net win.
No. It was Kojiro’s bitch cousin that fucked things up almost beyond repair by blowing her cover and getting labelled as The False Saint.
All three of Halveck’s problems: Vanek, Kojiro and Kaede seemed to have one root cause. The Heroes of Ror-Bhyk. They had to be dealt with soon, before they grew even more powerful.
It may be too late for that.
After all, he has heard the talk about the Kitsune somehow managing to kill Herlicht of Varlia, and the loss of one of his better customers hurt a lot.
Halveck wasn’t sure whether to believe those rumours, though. The few eyes he had left in Ror-Bhyk reported that just a few days before she was seen dealing with the Ghosts and the Imperial Has-Been they had long been rumoured to be allied with, so there was no way for the bitch to suddenly organise a revolt on Varlia. Sure, there were portal prisms, but she would have needed one linked to the island, and where would she have gotten that? Or why? Portal prisms were expensive. There was also the folderol about there being some sea monster there.
Despite his doubts, Halveck chose to keep that incident in mind. When it came to adventurers, you could never be sure. After all, they could have found something in that pocket of quiet and were testing it out on Varlia.
Yes. They have to be dealt with.
That being said, he had to hurry with his plans. If he succeeded… no matter what the “Heroes of Ror-Bhyk” could throw his way, he would prevail. With that in mind, he sent out messages to his men to start setting things into motion.
‘Enact Plan Crimson,’ he said to all of his agents through the magic mirror.
Getting enough of them cost him a small fortune, but that was one of the things that the money they got for putting all those women to use was for. Men didn't sell all that well. After all, why buy them as slaves when you can just use prisoners for hard labour?
Just as Halveck was about to finish for the day, he was contacted by Kihliam, one of the Dragoons still loyal to him. The man was currently assigned to Inquisitor Garrin, who was sent to… Ror-Bhyk of all places.
Interesting.
As Kihliam explained the situation, Halveck felt his grin widen with every sentence. He thanked the Dragoon and made one final call with a simple message.
‘Execute Contingency Aquamarine. Agent: Kihliam. Target: Ror-Bhyk.’
Perhaps the Church will still be of some use after all.
