Caeileera
‘Talk to me, guys!’ Sav, all pretences of maintaining security gone, shouted through the radio. ‘What the fuck is happening?’
I looked down and saw that people started to surround my friends while the bald fucker was goading them on.
I activated [Dead Eye] and, with shaking hands, trained my rifle at the Inquisitor.
I will not let you hurt them.
‘A mob formed to lynch them,’ Deirdee said the words, I couldn't.
‘FUUCK!’ Savri shouted, though I wasn't listening.
All that mattered was stopping that monster.
Then all chaos broke loose. Half a dozen people flew away from the mob, causing a general panic. Some people tried to rush my friends, but they managed to scare them off, and I saw that the City Guard and the Fae began to rush in to contain the situation. Then something flashed in the corner of my vision and I saw a bolt of energy shooting out from one of the windows and piercing through the bald fuckers head.
I looked at where the shot came from and saw a very thin figure with one large glowing green eye and three smaller ones forming a downwards triangle staring directly at me from a window of an apartment. Then there was a flash of light as a portal opened and the figure was gone.
What the fuck was that?
Lilyth
‘Been dead for at least two, maybe three days,’ Radeea said, examining the five corpses we found in a bathroom of an apartment that Caei saw the shooter in. ‘All killed with multiple deep incisions with a magical blade of some sort judging by the wounds being particularly cauterised.’
A couple and their three children. One of them an infant.
‘You sure, Rad?’ Baerniel asked, panting. ‘About… the time of death…’
The elderly Captain pretty much ran all the way over from the keep the moment he had heard about the clash trying to keep up with much younger Radeea, Sergeant Milten and Sol, the last two being recalled from their leave. Not that the two of them planned to sit on their asses twiddling their thumbs. From the end of our small group, it was just Savri and me. The rest of us, except for Dainyir, who was at the keep as we sent him there to report what he knew about Kihliam to the Viscount, were helping to secure the plaza and ensure that further incidents didn't take place.
I looked at Baerniel and saw that, worryingly, the officer was holding his chest.
‘You okay, sir?’ I asked.
‘I’ll… I’ll be fine, Lilyth. My body is just re… reminding me I am not twenty any… more.’
The cold sweat on his face was saying otherwise. I looked at Sav. She nodded and said:
‘Let me make sure of that, Captain.’
He began to protest, but the spasm of pain on his face made him stop and let Sav lead him to another room.
As Radeea, understandably, didn't want to proceed without knowing whether the Captain was okay and none of us felt like chit-chatting, I walked over to the window and looked down on the plaza. The Fae and other members of the City Guard were currently handling clean-up after the clash. Treating wounded, putting bodies on the corpse cart so that they could be taken to the city morgue. A total of eleven people died. Five of them died by my hand, and the rest were trampled to death when the panic broke out.
While blame for this ultimately lay with the Inquisitor and the Red Masks, I couldn't help but feel guilty for the six innocents. There were plenty of maybes about the situation, but I couldn't dwell on them as it would drive me insane.
The five men that died by my hand I had no remorse about. You try to hurt my family and me… You put your fate in your hands.
Sav and Baerniel returned a few minutes later.
‘Luckily it wasn't a heart attack,’ Sav explained. ‘I’ll ask Jillyead to take a look at the Captain once we are back at the keep.’
‘There is no need,’ Baerniel said weakly, but a glare from Sav made him relent.
‘I understand now why my mother views you as a worthy partner, Daughter of Malika,’ Asha said while entering the room. ‘Few people can channel the ferocity of the Storm as well as you do.’
‘And you are…?’ Baerniel asked.
‘Oh, I am sorry. My name is Asha, I am a Gale Knight in the service of the Lady of Air.’
‘The Lady of Air…’ Milten mulled the phrase over. ‘Oh. You serve Lady Ter’ius?’
‘She goes by Nyx now, but yes,’ Asha said matter-of-factly.
Realisation suddenly dawned on Sav’s face. Apparently, Nyxie never introduced the two of them. I mouthed “later” to her.
This was a mess enough without her involvement.
It wasn't that I didn't appreciate the extra help. It was… well… you know… an armed and armoured Fae running around during a period of astroturfed “racial tensions”... I could definitely see no downsides to that. None at all.
Radeea cleared her throat and returned to walking us through the results of her crime scene examination. The general conclusion she could reach was that our mysterious shooter had killed the family and just waited for a perfect moment to assassinate the Inquisitor. Said criterion being “someone with actual authority tries to do something about the preachy cunt”.
‘And we walked right into that,’ I spat.
‘You couldn't have known,’ Baerniel shook his head. ‘This plan was under so many layers of obfuscation that no one could have seen it coming. I assume you will be able to finish it up here, Rad?’
‘With Millie and Sol to keep me company, it will be a pleasure.’
Baerniel chuckled and said:
‘Sergeant, you have your assignment.’
I noticed a lot of unfriendly gazes as we were walking towards the keep. Most of them were directed at me.
Well… it was to be expected. I guess I can kiss my career in law enforcement goodbye.
In general, I started wondering whether leaving the city wouldn't be such a bad idea. Maybe the province even.
But you fuck one sheep…
Yeah, I would finish ending this mess, hide the rest of Winter in Mer-Cas and then… well… just leave.
Maybe the others would follow me, maybe they wouldn't, I didn't want to force them into a self-imposed exile. They had a nice and cosy life here after all. Why ruin it for them?
‘Corporal, we don’t need an honour guard,’ Baerniel said upon seeing the group of guards waiting for us in the keep’s courtyard.’
The man, whose name I dimly remembered to be Rigdwee, shook his head.
‘Captain, I am sorry, but I have been told by the Viscount to take Misses Lilyth and Caeileeera into custody on the charges of murder and assassination.’
I looked around and saw my good friend Kihliam standing by the entrance to the keep, along with two other Dragoons and the very guilty-looking Viscount.
Oh, Wilhum, you damn fool.
My gaze returned to the Dragoons.
I guess I know who dies first, I thought and laughed maniacally.
That made some of the guardsmen back away. Including Rigdwee.
They are afraid. Good.
‘Corporal,’ I began, channelling the [Eyes of Death], ‘This can go one of two ways. The first - you stand down, we…’
I had no idea how many people the “we" involved.
Could be just me and Fluffy.
‘... go into the keep, retrieve our things and leave. That way will result in you and your men being able to go home and see your families. The second option… You don’t stand down, the courtyard gets painted red with the blood of you and your men. I then proceed to kill every single person who stands in my way. Then I leave with my things. I suggest option one.’
Most of the guardsmen didn't bother waiting for Rigdwee’s reaction. They picked the smart option and fucked off, leaving the Corporal with only two men for backup.
‘Are you sure about this, my love?’ Aki asked in a hushed tone.
I pointed out the Dragoons.
‘Oh,’ she said and drew her swords. The rest of my friends followed suit.
‘Stand down, men,’ Baerniel said in an even tone.
‘Are you mad, Captain?’ the Viscount shouted.
‘I am sorry, Wilhum,’ the officer replied. ‘You are the mad one here. I will not risk the lives of my men to appease the monsters responsible for this whole mess.’
‘He is right, you know Willie,’ Malika stepped out onto the courtyard. ‘My daughter and her friends are one of your greatest assets, or rather were since I can't imagine them working with you after this.’
‘You don’t understand…’ Wilhum protested. ‘It is either them or a war with the Church. I managed to convince Kihliam that if I hand over Lilyth and Caeileera the Church will not demand the heads of the rest. That includes Savri.’
Oh, boy. That was precisely the wrong thing to say.
If my friends had any illusions about the possibility of us managing to resolve this with diplomacy, those were now gone.
‘Then you are a fool, Wilhum,’ Malika shook her head in disgust. ‘Nothing is stopping them from breaking that agreement. If memory serves, Dainyir said that this man was a Red Mask?’
She pointed at Kihliam, who was beginning to look very uneasy, and immediately protested by calling those revelations “slanderous lies”.
The guards, so far laser-focused on us, started eyeing the “Dragoon” with wariness.
‘It is his word against a Temple Dragoon,’ Wilhum continued to defend his position. ‘No one is going to believe an exiled slaver princeling married to one of the suspects. And let’s not forget…’
I had no idea what the Viscount wanted us to remember, but truth be told, I was done. I turned into the [Cloud Form] to make a definite statement about where I stood on the issue, and looked at the three Dragoons.
I activated the [Swiftness of the Wind] and leapt towards them, deciding to test out a new ability I have developed during our stay in the realm of Air: [Jet Jump].
Wind gathered beneath my feet and launched me high into the air.
As I reached the apex of the jump and began to fall, I used [Jet Jump] again to slow myself down, the G-Forces rattling my insides, and to adjust my flight path so that I could land next to the Dragoons.
The men weren't going to just let me do that, of course, and drew their swords, but there was still plenty in my bag of tricks. I cast [Shadow Barrage] and I killed Kihliam's friends with two projectiles each.
That gave me enough window of time to, upon landing, throw a wild swinging punch at him with the [Fist of Wind] active.
‘Say hi to Kojiro and Xyrus from me!’ I shouted just before the hit was supposed to impact Kihliam's centre of mass, but instead of connecting with his body, my fist landed on a shimmering barrier.
The hit was still enough to send the man flying several metres back. He landed on his back in the middle of the courtyard. Kihliam bounced several times, before finally coming to a stop near the entrance. Shockingly enough, the barrier still held, but was seriously cracked.
As he began dragging himself from the ground, he dismissed the spell and recast it, moments before a barrage of attacks from my team hit him. Realising he had no chance to survive, Kihliam reached into his pocket and disappeared in a flash of light.
A FUCKING PORTAL PRISM!
‘I guess you can try explaining that to the Church,’ I said to Wilhum without even looking at him, and then, I turned towards my friends. ‘Come. I think we are done here.'
