The Chronicles of Dwynveia – A Slimeling LitRPG
Chapter 204 – The Great DespairKihliam - a few moments before
‘Don’t be afraid, Kihliam,’ the six-armed and four-legged spider-looking motherfucker said. ‘Your death will serve a greater purpose.’
He spat on the monster's mask, but Gaar’rinver ignored him and walked away to focus on preparation for the ritual. One in which Kihliam would be sacrificed to the demon these monsters worshipped.
Light, protect me, he prayed.
‘THE LIGHT WON’T SAVE YOU, GNAT,’ a voice boomed in his head. ‘YOU ARE MINE.’
For the first time in years, Kihliam felt tears well in his eyes. This wasn't fair. It was all Halveck's fault! He was the one who brought the Cabal into all this.
Spare me, I beg you! I will do anything!
‘BUT YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE EVERYTHING I COULD HAVE WANTED OF YOU,’ the voice seemed amused. ‘WELL, ALMOST EVERYTHING. I NEED YOU TO DIE.’
Lilyth
Whatever the beam was doing, it sure bolstered the faltering Sanguine resistance. They were waiting for this, and they won. It also made me realise that I sure as fuck was far away from my friends, and my mana was getting worryingly low. The blood-drinking bastards also noticed that, at least the former, and began to move to cut me off.
Time to go, me doth thinketh.
I started to activate [Jet Jump], but at the same time, I felt a barrage of sharp objects pierce my back, the shock of which caused me to lose balance and launch myself into a wall of a house. I impacted it with my shoulder with enough strength to shatter what felt like every bone in my right arm and several of my ribs.
I managed to turn to my back, which only pushed the knives in my back deeper, and saw that the Sanguine began to converge on me, weapons drawn. None of the monsters were among them, which told me it was personal. Probably due to the Vicars I killed.
You’d think they would be happy about the job openings.
Then I realised that killing me was probably the promotion requirement.
Gonna make you work for it you, rat bastards.
It was getting hard for me to concentrate and it hurt to breathe. There was probably some causality there. Still… [Shadow Barrage] was a great equaliser.
Four dead…
Eight…
Ten…
I ran out of mana. There were still two of them. I summoned my sword…
What was it called…
…into my left hand…
The Sanguine did what they do best and began to fight among each other over who would get the kill. Their reward for that dispute turned out to be a pillar of flames that erupted from underneath their legs.
With their death, I was finally able to let the merciful oblivion take me, knowing I would wake up at Ere’s side.
Deirdee
‘Lilyth!’ I heard Dainyir shout as my former Serrated Blades brethren beset us.
Stay focused. Stay focused.
I couldn't let myself be distracted. It was hard enough to kill my former brothers-and-sisters-in-arms as it was.
‘YOU WILL JOIN HER SOON ENOUGH,’ I heard a chilling voice in my head, and the surprise of it was enough to cost me, as someone tackled me to the ground, and I felt sharp pain spread through my stomach.
I looked at my assailant. Even though he was covered in furs I could easily tell who it was.
‘Zvir… vil…’
Dainyir
‘Leave her alone, you bastard!’ he shouted as he charged the winged bastard who just hurt Deirdee.
That turned out to be a mistake, as he forgot about the two Sanguine Hunters that were prowling around looking for an opening. And he had just given them one.
Something hard and heavy hit him to the side of his body, sending him sprawling.
The last thing Dainyir saw on that world was the eyeless face of the monster and the six-clawed hand that descended upon his head.
Deirdee
Zvirvil pulled out the knife he had impaled in my stomach and plunged it into my body again. He tried to do it again, but he was hit by a barrage of blood projectiles, causing him to scramble for cover. He never reached it as he was engulfed in [Jet of Hellfire].
Persephone
Lilyth wouldn't survive, she realised.
Her wounds were just… too severe as the [Scan Body] spell told Persephone.
Broken ribs, punctured lung, severed spine, massive internal bleeding due to organs being turned to mush, crushed arm…
She looked to where Sav and Caei were, but they were dealing with an absolute clusterfuck of their own.
Meaning… It is up to me to save her. Boy, is she going to hate me for this, but we need her.
With a flick of a wrist, she incinerated the corpses of nearby enemies and then, through [Pyrokinesis], lifted the ashes and flames into the air.
She looked back at Lilyth. The Kitsune was dead.
We’ll see about that, she thought, fighting back tears, and began infusing Lilyth with Fire. [Elemental Transformation: Succubus]
Savri
As Aki took care of the Assassin that was on Deirdee, I downed the two monsters that were on Dainyir. I admired her resolve as she had a popped shoulder after being hit with Broodlord’s tentacle. It wouldn't surprise me if some of her ribs were cracked, too.
I rushed to Dainyir's side, but one glance told me that there was nothing I could do. The boy was dead. His chest and torso were torn open, and his face was a mess of blood and gore.
Lilyth would be devastated.
Where is she anyway? I haven't seen her for a while.
‘She’s dead,’ Nyxie told me in a teary voice.
The news hit me like a truck.
No.
I took a deep breath and pushed my feelings deep inside.
Master Sergeant Adzhenair time.
Shouting orders to the other three to cover me, I rushed to Deirdee’s side and began healing her.
Let's improve our odds a bit.
‘Where’s… Lilyth?’ I suddenly heard Aki ask, clearly struggling with words.
I looked up from Deirdee at her and simply shook my head.
The expression of pure anguish and disbelief on her face broke my heart and caused my own resolve to start cracking.
‘I’m sorry…’ I simply said, choking back tears.
Aki screamed and I felt the temperature around us rise.
Oh…balls.
Pillars of dark red fire started to erupt around us, consuming the Sanguine. They began to retreat but Aki wouldn't let them. Orbs of Hellfire appeared above our enemies and began raining on them.
Once the Sanguine were nothing but cinder and ash, Aki fell to her knees and began to weep. Unaware of the reason for this, Caeileera rushed to her side only to begin to cry herself after learning of the stupid furball’s fate.
Stupid… stupid… furball… now safe, I began to cry myself.
Lilyth
I can’t remember what being dead was actually like, but there was a certain sense of peace and serenity to it. I think I briefly spoke with Ere, but I wasn't sure.
‘All it takes is all you got, and you still haven’t given your all,’ I dimly recalled her saying.
Dain was there too, now that I thought of it.
Wait.
‘Dain!’ I shouted as I started awake and saw my friends standing over me, crying.
Aki just threw herself on me and threw her arms around me.
‘Y-you are alive!’ she bawled. ‘I… I… thought I lost you.’
I wrapped her hands around her and said:
‘I’m here, don’t worry. I promised I wouldn't leave you,’ I replied.
Wait. What's wrong with my voice?
My body felt weird in general. Then everything sank in.
‘I was dead, wasn't I?’
‘I managed to bring you back,’ Persophone, looking like a fucking demon, replied in an equally weird-sounding voice. ‘There may be some… side-effects.’
‘Am I now undead?’ I asked, not feeling anything like it.
‘No,’ ‘Phone shook her head. ‘I had to turn you into a Hellborn like me to fix your body.’
‘Explains the voice,’ I said and hugged Aki tighter. ‘I guess I didn't imagine meeting Dain in the Antechamber, then.’
‘No,’ Sav said, a fresh batch of tears welling in her eyes. ‘He gave his life while trying to save Deirdee.’
‘I shouldn't have let him come with us,’ I said also beginning to cry.
‘You couldn't have known this would happen,’ Sav said. ‘Without him, more of us would be dead most likely.’
Doesn't make it easier.
‘So what am I?’ I asked, still holding Aki close to my chest, after the tears stopped flowing
‘A Succubus,’ Persephone replied. ‘Don’t worry. It is not like in Terran legends. That's just a word for a female Hellborn. Males are Incubi.’
‘I guess this comes with some horrible downsides.’
‘Not really. You are now vulnerable to Light magic, as Hellborn are a combination Fire/Shadow Fae. You are also completely sterile. For reasons I cannot understand we can only spread by converting others. Bonus - you shouldn't have to worry about Heats anymore, I think. I wasn’t on my period ever since I was turned, at least.’
‘How did it happen for you?’
‘Looked for magical knowledge in a wrong tomb.’
‘Ah. Will my voice turn back to normal?’
‘Once the power boost I gave you runs out. The horns are here to stay,’ ‘Phone averted her gaze.
Horns?
‘They look amazing,’ Aki said as Caei offered me a hand mirror.
I had to agree with Aki. The horns were white, and protruded from my temples, only to curve upwards over my forehead diadem style, ending in sharp upwards-pointing tips around my hairline.
‘Will make kissing you difficult,’ I said.
Aki then proved to me that no, it wouldn't.
‘I’m shocked I don’t have a tail like you, Persephone,’ I told her after we were done welcoming me back among the living and we were walking towards Dainyir's body to pay our respects, and then return to our mission.
‘You weren't fully transformed,’ she explained. ‘Though maybe your existing one overrode it. I never turned anyone like you before, so I am not entirely sure how it works. We can test that, however.’
Persephone pointed to some of the still-burning fires.
‘Try absorbing them and turning into your Hellborn form.’
‘Ummm… how?’ I was confused.
‘You should have an ability called [Lesser Flame Manipulation],’ she explained.
‘Persephone. I can’t use Fire Arcana.’
Did she not think this one through again?
‘Check your character sheet, sweetie,’ Caei said. ‘There may be… um… surprises there.’
Oh… dear.
Still, I opened it and began to look through it…
The Basic Details look normal enough…
and...
‘It’s all gone!’ I screamed in horror. ‘My spells! My abilities! I lost everything!
