The Chronicles of Dwynveia – A Slimeling LitRPG
Chapter 223 – Vox InfernalisLilyth - Day 15 - 106 Days Remain
We spent the night in an inn in the middle ring that Rennie recommended. It actually had enough rooms to comfortably fit us all, even if we had to share beds.
Not that our quad particularly cared, and hell, they actually had a bed large enough to fit all four of us. The innkeeper was surprised by my request for it, but then I explained my three wives were my ladies-in-waiting and we always shared a bed. That shut him up.
That royalty shit is finally coming in handy.
‘I really missed that,’ I purred as we lay in a warm pile of love and warm naked bodies.
‘Yeah,’ Aki purred back. ‘It just wasn't the same without you.’
The lovebirds are back together, at last.
Of course, as we suspected, the good times didn't last that long, and the morning after our arrival, our breakfast was interrupted by the arrival of a maybe sixteen-year-old black-haired boy wearing a way too large for him red tunic with golden frills, white pants with similar ornamentation, and a blue tabard with a golden two-headed bird emblazoned on it.
The teenager looked around, noticed us and walked over to our table.
‘My Ladies,’ he began with a deep bow, ‘Prince Vikker has requested the presence of Viscountess Lilyth of Ror-Bhyk immediately.’
Ah. So that's the game we are playing. Very well.
Kart looked like she wanted to say something, but I silenced her with a gesture.
‘Don’t shoot the messenger,’ I whispered to her, before turning my attention to said courier. ‘Very well. You can tell your employer that I will call upon him after I conclude my morning business.’
I didn't have any, but they didn't know that.
‘My lady,’ the courier said with terror in his voice, ‘His Highness in his instructions has specified that should you choose to delay, I am to stress he is a busy man and any tardiness on your part may result in the meeting having a different tone.’
‘I am also a busy woman, and I do believe the tone of the meeting has been long established by him. That being said, Rennie, could you give the boy a generous tip? I fear he might have been caught in the crossfire of a dick-measuring contest, and he deserves compensation for his trouble.’
Ren smiled, took out a few banknotes from her satchel and handed them to the boy.
‘I believe two thousand Divines should be enough,’ she said with a smile. ‘A sign of Royal goodwill and all that.’
The courier stared wide-eyed at the unexpected bounty.
‘It’s yours,’ I said encouragingly. ‘Go buy yourself something nice.’
He hid the notes inside his shirt, stammered out a thank you and left.
‘Are you really going to antagonise the Prince?’ Kart asked with a warning tone in her voice. ‘This is not Wilhum you are dealing with here.’
‘My original plan was just to ignore him,’ I explained with a shrug. ‘Do what we have to do here and leave. Now, though, he started something he might not be able to finish, and I am going balls to the wall. Anyway, take your time eating. Afterwards, I believe we have some clothes shopping to do. If I am to be unfashionably late, I should do so in an outfit that is right for the occasion.’
Aki - Task Group Hammer - Day 15 - 106 Days Remain
We split into two groups for our operations in Denyr: Hammer and Dagger. The former included our primary damage dealers - Lilyth, Caei, Persephone, Phosi and myself, while the latter was our covert specialists - Sav, Ren, Anika, Kart and Deirdee.
Originally, Lilyth and Phosi were meant to form a third team - Control, with Dee joining Hammer to compensate as the second frontliner, but the Prince forced our hand.
So, as the five of us went shopping, Dagger took up the more dangerous task of getting in touch with the local underworld.
We had radios to coordinate, though we chose to use them sparingly. If the Ghosts were here, their allies could be as well, so we wanted to stay as kou-vert as possible.
Anyway, Lilyth went for what she described as a “heavy metal magical girl” look. Her combat boots, black-and-white thigh-high socks, knee-length black leather skirt, equally black silk frilly shirt, and she also borrowed some occult jewellery with prominent pentagrams from Caei and to top things off, she changed her fur and eye colour to pink.
‘All I need now is a magic staff,’ Lilyth remarked. ‘Preferably with a pink heart-shaped magic crystal. I could craft one, but I don't think we have time for that.’
I checked the interface. It was nearing 13:00.
Yeah. That's enough dilly-dallying.
Ren - Task Force Dagger - Day 15 - 106 Days Remain
Our first destination was the outer ring. That would probably be the easiest place for us to start looking for the Ghosts. I had no doubt they had a heavy presence everywhere, but they would be the easiest to find among the less fortunate.
‘What do you think the chances of the Prince surviving the meeting with Lilyth are?’ Deirdee asked the very good questions, as we walked at a leisurely pace, pretending to be clueless travellers, something much easier to do without most of our gallery of freaks present.
‘I would say pretty high,’ Kart said with a shrug. ‘I think we are running out of your relatives to put in positions of power, Ren.’
I wanted to protest, but I couldn't figure out a better candidate. It is not like we were building a cadre of retainers.
Or had any here.
Or would have the time to bring them over here even if we did have them.
‘There is still grandpa Harkan,’ I mused. ‘But I think you are right.’
‘We can always name Chirpy the new Prince of Denyr,’ Sav laughed.
That was a good idea. My furry buddy was still slightly miffed about not being named the Chancellor of Ror-Bhyk.
‘Since I am new here,’ Anika chimed in, ‘Why are we talking as if Lilyth is about to launch a coup?’
‘Oh, she isn't,’ Savri laughed. ‘It is just that there is a high likelihood of the Prince making a series of very bad decisions that will result in him losing his power. He started it by not acknowledging Lilyth's official title. She might hate being in charge of Ror-Bhyk, but there is no way she will let that insult go. I mean, she already chose to escalate. I don’t blame her either. We fought too hard for Lilyth’s right to call herself the Witch Queen. Deirdee, Persephone and Dainyir died for it. Hell, the furball herself died. Twice.’
‘Damn,’ Deirdee said with disappointment in her voice. ‘Now, I wish we had tagged along with them.’
Yeah. That will be a sight to behold.
Aki - Task Force Hammer - Day 15 - 106 Days Remain
They had us wait for an hour in the antechamber to the Prince’s audience chamber.
‘Maybe if we were on tiimeee…’ I began to say, but was interrupted by a yawn.
‘They would have us wait regardless, morsel,’ Phosi raised her gaze from a novel she was reading. ‘As Her Furry Highness said, this is a dick-measuring contest. A political game I am well-familiar with.’
‘I wish you and Sav agreed on a version,’ Lilyth laughed. ‘Then again, it does provide some variety.’
Finally, the Prince must have deemed we had waited enough because the door opened and someone called:
‘Viscountess Lilyth of Ror-Bhyk!’
I moved to get up, but Phosi stopped me.
‘Follow the Queen's lead.’
And Her Royal Furriness sat, looking at her nails.
‘Viscountess Lilyth of Ror-Bhyk!’ someone called again.
Still no reaction.
Finally, a bunch of breastplate-wearing guards came out of the audience chamber and marched towards us. Weapon-wise, they seemed to be trying to pull off some kind of pirate look, being armed with flintlock pistols and sabres.
At least that's what they look like in those “romance” novels that Ren’s mom has a library full of. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that some of the cool-sounding adventure stories were just about people fucking. Not that books like that don't have their uses, either. Just you know… I wanted to read about pirates.
‘By the order of His Royal Highness, you are to report before him or face the consequences for insulting his authority, Kitsune,’ their leader, at least judging by him having a revolver rather than a single-shot weapon, snarled.
‘What did I do to insult the Prince?’ Lilyth asked. ‘I have just been sitting here, waiting for my turn.’
‘You have been called in. Twice.’
‘I have? My apologies, it must have been very quiet. Did you hear them announce me, Phosi?’
‘No, Your Highness,’ the Sconryoll replied dutifully.
Oh. Ooohhh.
Persephone and Caei also shook their heads.
The guard’s face went red, and his hand began moving towards the hilt of his sword.
‘I wouldn't,’ Lilyth remarked quietly. ‘I do not kid when I call myself the Witch Queen.’
‘Then come peacefully, “Witch Queen”, and I won't have to test it.’
Lilyth smiled at that and, very loudly, said:
‘See? Was calling me my proper title that hard? Sure, let's go see the Prince.’
We wanted to follow them, but the guard stopped us.
‘Just her,’ he smiled maliciously.
‘Come, girls,’ Lilyth ignored him. ‘Let’s not keep the Prince waiting. We wouldn't want to insult the man after all.’
The guards tried to stop us, but Lilyth’s eyes began to glow with lightning, which told them it was a bad idea, so they backed away.
The audience chamber was larger than Wilhum’s, with a red carpet leading from the entrance to the throne. There was also a column-supported upper gallery overlooking the room from three sides of the room, the one exception being the one behind the oh-so-important chair.
Sitting in it was Prince Vikker Caiver, no “von” in his surname curiously enough, a balding middle-aged man dressed in an ornate red mantle trimmed with white fur, beneath which he wore what looked to be a black suit. I had no idea how he could wear that without collapsing from heatstroke in the warm summer weather.
Maybe he dressed up for the meeting with my foxy sweetie. If so, she wins style-wise.
He wasn't alone in the room. In fact, there were more guards inside, though given there were only thirty of them, I wasn't sure whether that was a show of force or an insult. Probably the former, given they were just meant for Lilyth, but even in her weakened state, she would make short work of them. Probably without having to move.
‘Viscountess Lilyth!’ Prince Vikker exclaimed with a forced smile. ‘So happy you finally joined me!’
Lilyth said nothing.
‘Are you seriously still going to play games, fox?’
‘I don’t see why I shouldn't,’ Lilyth said with a shrug.
‘I can throw you in jail or have you executed for your disrespect.’
‘Oh, that's what the emotional support overwhelming numbers are for. Or the three guys with crossbows in the upper gallery, hidden just out of sight.’
Was he seriously planning to assassinate Lilyth? Is he trying to get himself removed from power?
‘Just precautions, my dear. In case our talks go awry. I believe I did warn you that the tone of the meeting would change if you chose to be tardy.’
‘So, previously you would just insult me, and now you are going to insult me extra hard? Let's clear things up a bit then and set the tone where the fuck it should be.’
Lilyth then began to levitate slightly above the floor and turned into her Hellborn form.
‘Oh, Prince Vikker…’ she thundered. ‘You chose to fuck with the wrong person. I am Lilyth Geist of Terra, the Witch Queen of Ror-Bhyk, Queen-Consort of Ereshkigal, the Princess of the Realm of Air and the Marquess of Hell. I killed a god to earn my seat. You were lucky enough to spring out of the right cunt. Address me properly, and I will let you keep your throne.’
She then turned back to normal and landed.
‘Now what is…’ she began to say, but was interrupted by the sound of a gunshot.
One of the guards apparently had had enough and chose to assassinate her. However, instead of our Jelly falling down dead, the bullet passed harmlessly through her, slightly dispersing the parts of her body where it passed through.
Oh, right. [Shadow Form].
There was a cry of pain from the other side of the room, as one of the other guards fell to the ground, clutching his stomach.
‘...it that you wanted to talk about?’ Lilyth finished her question as if nothing had just happened. ‘Perhaps, we should discuss this in private, though. Meanwhile, Caei, could you please give the poor man some first aid?’
