Phosi - Day 55 - 71 Days Remain

As pissed as I was about what was happening to the morsels, Her Furry Highness collapsing to the ground while clutching her chest was the last straw for me. As annoying as the girls could be at times, they were my friends, the first I had in over five hundred years, and I would not let them come to harm.

Let’s see who the apex predator here is, bitch!

Still, first I had to ensure my friends were safe, especially Lilyth and Persephone. And… as difficult as it was for me to admit it, I needed the girls' help with this. Fire, something I couldn't use, would be most useful here, and while I wasn't hit with the initial wave of whatever happened here, I could feel the cellulose fucker clawing at me, looking for a way to debilitate me too.

Gotta act fast.

Her Furry Highness, while of great initial concern, turned out to be fine, just unconscious. Her breathing was slightly uneven, but that was it.

Making her hallucinate a heart attack was fucking evil.

That being said, this was no time for Lilyth to think she's dead.

I tried to shake her awake, but when that didn't work, I slapped her in the face several times, each hit stronger than the previous one, but when punching didn't work, I had to accept that Lilyth was likely not gonna wake up. Caeileera and Aki have also grown quiet, and a quick glance told me they were both out cold.

I guess that's how all the skeletons ended up here.

Next, I went up to Persephone to finally check up on her, and good thing I did too, as she sustained a lot of damage in the fall.

Open fractures, ragged breathing. She doesn't have much time left, I’d wager.

I set her bones the best I could and poured several healing potions into her mouth. It would have to do.

Look at me. A vengeful spirit playing nurse. I will never live it down.

Was I still a vengeful spirit though? Or was I turning into something else entirely?

Those were questions for later though. I had more immediate concerns, though, the first and foremost being my friends. It just didn't feel right to leave them to rot in the courtyard while the Harvester plant did gods knew what to them.

What if it sucks the life out of them while I am gallivanting around the building?

One thing I discovered while dragging the team out was that Caeileera could stand to lose a few kilograms. It is not like she was fat, far from it. Truth be told, I wished I had a body like hers when I was alive. It was just that, you know… between her height, horns and… curves, she wasn't the lightest.

Still, my efforts paid off as a quarter or so after I was done, my friends began to stir awake.

‘Ugh… what happened?’ Aki groaned. ‘The last thing I remember was… being trapped and alone… did you guys come back for me? Why did you leave to begin with?’

‘We didn't,’ I explained. ‘That thing made you all hallucinate horrible things, little morsel.’

The full extent of horror became fully apparent once Persephone and Lilyth told their stories.

‘Don’t worry, honey,’ Aki tried to comfort Her Furry Highness. ‘The curse is inert and cannot hurt you.’

‘Can’t it?’ Lilyth, predictably, didn't sound convinced.

She didn't look convinced either as she was sitting in a fetal position, her face buried in her knees. To be fair, I wouldn't be okay in her shoes either. Having something inside of you that potentially could be a ticking time bomb was… disconcerting to say the least.

Fate wasn't kind to her, was it?

Once again, I felt furious about what was happening to my friends. I made myself a promise to make every single person and plant that wronged them pay.

‘I think this thing used [Despair] on us or some other spell like this,’ Persephone explained, taking my attention away from my internal turmoil. ‘Perhaps it has an aura of it. Don’t believe anything you have seen out there. Those spells can be quite insidious.’

‘If it was not real, why can I still hear the bitch whisper to me?’

‘Some people are more susceptible to those than others. Or maybe it is the curse passively enhancing their effects. I am not sure. Even back in my days, mind manipulation spells were rarely used. It wasn't even because of lack of access. They were simply viewed as useless. You first need to be able to overpower the Willpower of the target, which is not something a lot of people are even capable of, and even then the spells are one-and-done because the victim is primed to disbelieve the effects, lacklustre as they usually are. Frankly, I don't think any normal mage would be able to achieve what this viny cunt did.’

‘Plus, let's face it,’ Caei quickly added, ‘if the curse is really acting up again I think Ere and Nyx will ensure it stops.’

‘True, I guess,’ Lilyth nodded. ‘Hopefully [Wither] will go away once we reduce that glorified dandelion to fertiliser.’

Assuming dandeelayens were some Terran weeds, I turned back to Persephone:

‘So what you are saying is that the four of you are safe from this thing now?’

‘Not sure,’ the sorceress shook her head. ‘Like I said, this thing is one of the most powerful mages I have EVER seen. So the question is how much power did it use against us. Was this just some passive effect, a full-on attack, or just swatting flies aside? In my case, literally.’

All things considered, ‘Phone got off getting “swatted” lightly, as she suffered no permanent damage.

Nurse Phosi 1 - Evil Plant 0

I caught myself before I began daydreaming about a career as a doctor, something that probably led the old me to sign up with RMAI. Alas, as much as I hated to admit it, me actually being a force for good in the world was no longer in the cards, as monsters like me were only good for one thing.

What is happening to me? Is there something wrong with me?

‘No,’ I heard a voice. ‘You just are starting to remember.’

I immediately recognised whose voice it was. It was once mine. Before I became… this.

‘Phosi,’ Lilyth turned to me, interrupting my internal struggles. ‘Where do you think this thing is growing from?’

That was a very good question.

‘Probably the lowest level,’ I mused. ‘If memory serves, the worst stuff would have been kept there.’

‘The lowest being?’

I facepalmed. Of course they wouldn't know that.

‘Oh… six floors underground.’

‘I imagine the building was set up with fire compartmentation in mind?’

I rubbed my chin, trying to extract the relevant memories.

‘Yes… I think so. Not sure how well it is holding up given the passage of time and well… the plant.’

‘So fire might not work as well as we hope,’ Lilyth mused. ‘I mean, if we set the building on fire from afar it might not actually burn down.’

‘We could just set the plant on fire,’ Aki interjected. ‘I mean, we can see its vines from here.’

‘That might not work. Depends on how much water is inside of it. Also, magic is a factor. Still, if fire is not a reliable option… then lightning might be.’

Lilyth's fur turned into dark clouds with lightning arcing inside of them. As if mimicking her, the so-far mostly cloudless sky became heavily overcast, and I could feel electricity in the air.

Oh… fuck.

This was the first time I had seen Lilyth employ the [Storm Form], and it seemed absolutely terrifying.

There was a sudden flash of light as Her Furry Majesty turned into lightning and flew… blinked… zapped… whatever-you-call-it several metres above us where she rematerialised.

Lilyth then raised her right hand and lightning “struck” it, but instead of electrocuting her, the raw force of nature formed into a ball. Our Queen then redirected the thunderbolt towards the vines growing out of the building.

More lightning strikes arced from the heavens towards it, enhancing the power of the spell, though that word seemed to be insufficient to describe what was happening.

It worked too, as a somewhat fittingly thunderous roar of pain and rage sounded in our minds, actually giving me a headache and causing the others to yelp in pain. The psychic emanations slowly turned to moans of agony and then silence.

Lilyth continued the spell for a few seconds more and then returned to the ground and simply collapsed onto her face.

‘Remind me not to do that again,’ she groaned after lifting her head.

By then her fur mostly returned to its normal orange colouration, though there was notable smokiness to it.

Hearing no response from any of us, she sat up to her heels and looked around. I followed her gaze and saw that the other three were just sitting there in shock, their faces white and hair standing on their ends.

I wasn't sure whether it was from the psychic assault and the display of Lilyth's power or a combination of the two.

‘What happened to them?’ our Queen asked, and not waiting for my reply, got up and walked over to Aki.

She waved her hand in front of the blue-haired morsel’s face, but since it elicited no reaction, Lilyth looked at me questioningly.

‘Haven’t you felt it?’ I asked.

‘Felt what?’ she replied with a question of her own.

‘The plant’s psychic assault?’

‘I did… sense its agony, but otherwise felt nothing.’

Lilyth furrowed her brows in concern.

‘Was it really that bad?’ she asked, confused.

‘It was strong enough to give me a headache,’ I explained, still feeling the aftereffects of that. ‘Haven’t had one of those in quite a while.’

‘Fuuck… I guess channelling Divine power must have shielded me from the brunt of it.’

She took out a mana potion from her satchel and downed it. After a moment’s thought, she drank another.

‘How’s your… visitor?’ I asked, carefully.

‘Silent so far,’ Lilyth replied with relief palpable in her voice. ‘Time will tell whether it is permanent.’

I wanted to reassure her, but stopped. What use would it be?

‘Shall we give them time to recover and check if the thing is actually dead?’ Lilyth changed the subject.

‘No,’ I shook my head, surprising even myself with the quick decision. ‘I don't want to leave them alone in case something bad is still lurking out here.’

Lilyth simply nodded.

‘Haven’t considered that.’
