‘I think we found my arm,’ Lilyth pointed at the pile of half-molten bones that lay on the floor of the “honey trap” room. ‘I was wondering what had happened to it after it fucked off.’

‘If you want, I can try reattaching it,’ I joked before I could bite my tongue.

Lilyth responded by flipping me off with both of her hands.

‘Imagine the one on the floor is doing it too,’ she said grimly and then chuckled.

‘I’ve been wondering, babe,’ Aki said. ‘You seem to be taking your limb situation in stride.’

I took in a sharp breath. That was a very dicey question to ask, but the Furball simply shrugged in response.

‘As weird as it may sound, I think I got used to being dismembered. I mean, I’ve lost an arm before, courtesy of Persephone. I’ve also been blown up in half, bisected, shot multiple times, stabbed, electrocuted, burned, raped, rotten and probably a dozen other things I forgot. This isn’t even my original body. Or the first replacement one, now that I think of it. Oh, right, I also fucking died. Twice. And have a death curse on me…’

There we go, I thought grimly and snapped my fingers several times to get Lilyth’s attention.

‘Okay, that’s enough of a spiral, Furball. Akster, please refrain from asking further “why aren’t you traumatised” questions until we leave, m’kay?’

‘Yes, ma’am,’ she replied, contrition palpable in her voice. ‘I didn’t mean to…’

‘Don’t worry about it,’ the Furball said warmly. ‘We all know I shouldn’t be here.’

‘And yet, I can’t imagine doing this without you,’ I smiled.

‘That one is waaay bigger than the one you almost fell into, Sav,’ Ren pointed at the giant flytrap with a pile of bones in the middle.

‘That’s one fucked up way to die,’ Deirdee muttered. ‘You take a wrong step, walls close around you and your prison begins to digest you…’

‘You fucking don’t say,’ Caei spat venomously.

While the former assassin was busy extricating herself from the hole she just dug for herself, I carefully walked up to the plant and began studying it, images of the poor SOB's final moments flashing through my mind. But instead of some faceless lightie, the person being digested was Caeileera.

‘Makes you think, eh?’ Phosi suddenly rasped next to me, causing me to jump and almost fall face-first into the flytrap.

‘Sorry,’ the vengeful spirit helped me steady myself. ‘I didn’t mean to startle you.’

‘A lot of “unmeant” interactions on this floor,’ I grumbled, but then waved the issue away as I had my own insensitive statement to make. ‘I am curious as to why… seeing this makes you introspective. Don’t…’

‘Don’t I do the same thing to people?’ she finished for me. ‘Yes. Yes, I do. But, first seeing what happened to Caeileera and Lilyth, and now this hapless fool… it made me think.’

‘Not so fun when it happens to who you like, or you don’t know if they deserve it?’

‘Quite. I don’t know if this is just the old me surfacing, or some twisted piece of Sconryoll “programming” implanted within me at an instinctual level…’

‘Does it matter?’

‘What do you mean?’

‘All that matters is that you consider what had happened here wrong. The source of that feeling is… irrelevant.’

‘True enough,’ Phosi didn’t sound particularly enthusiastic.

‘The real question is: “how will this affect your future behaviour,” isn’t it?’ I cut to the heart of the matter.

‘Yes,’ she nodded meekly. ‘Pun not intended, but you could say I am losing stomach for you know…’

‘Eating people alive?’ I tried not to sound judgmental, as, to be honest, I wasn’t terribly bothered by it.

Dead is dead. Sure, seeing Phosi do it activated some primal fear instinct in me, but that was something I’ve known how to suppress for ages.

‘Yes,’ Phosi said meekly. ‘But at the same time, when I saw what Nevahl did to the little princess, a beast awoke in me, and I couldn’t stop myself.’

Ah.

‘As weird as it may sound,’ I say carefully, ‘you should talk to Lilyth.’

Phosi gave me a curious look.

‘I think she went through something that maybe wasn’t identical, but similar enough with regards to her identity.’

‘The infamous Huntress,’ Phosi muttered. ‘Yes, I get what you are saying.’

‘It’s not just that. The reason the Huntress grew so strong was that Her Royal Furriness was also existing between identities. Human, Slime and Kitsune. She needed external help to understand what she is and what her needs are.’

‘There are not that many Sconryolls struggling with their identity around. Or in general really.’

Then something struck me.

‘Are you one though? A Sconryoll, I mean.’

‘What else would I be?’

‘Allow me to rephrase. Have you ever met another of your kind?’

Phosi

‘Sconryolls are extremely rare,’ I shook my head. ‘I sought out my sisters but never found any.’

‘That doesn’t sound like something a vengeful spirit would do,’ Savri pointed out, giving me a pause.

That… that is actually a good point.

Something weird began happening to me then. An unknown presence that I could swear I remember from a distant past began clawing at the back of my mind.

Where do I know it from, though?

‘I only began doing that years after I came out of the initial rage… most of my senses somewhat returned to me by then.’

‘And that “initial rage” of yours… How are you sure it happened? We already know your memories of your death are incomplete.’

That was an excellent question. While I doubted that Nyxie lied to me… I couldn’t be certain she told me the entire truth either.

‘There are also two factors to consider,’ Sav- the pink-haired bitch continued. ‘There is this woman in the Realm of Shadow named Teliar Zi-Lind…’

Doctor Zi-Lind is still…

Irrelevant!

…alive? How?

‘She died during the mess in Akh’Ret’s Mercy,’ she answered my unvoiced - pointless - question. ‘Apparently, after she died, Telly cut a deal with Ere which involved the removal of her memories.’

I do- love-n’t like where this is going.

‘Furthermore, thanks to Lilyth we know that the gods can place souls into bodies not of their own. So… is it possible that you were grafted onto an actual Sconryoll instead of becoming one naturally? Or perhaps the Gods made you one for some reason or another.’

A punishment…

A reward…

‘I… I… think you might be onto something,’ I said, and the presence inside of me rejoiced.

My doubts regarding my identity seemed to only feed it, and that was the money shot.

‘It’s not just that,’ Savri continued. ‘We’ve been friends for over a year…’

Ones like us don’t need friends.

‘...and, sure, you are a misanthropist and a misandrist, but other than your understandable grudge against Strickland, you only truly lost your shit twice. Against the slavers on Varlia and against Nevahl.’

There was also Persephone on Varlia. But that one falls into the grudge category.

And yet you let her live and even befriended her. Disgusting.

‘None of those really count as something a vengeful spirit would do. Those are… actions someone seeking to exact justice would do. Come to think of it, your grudge against Strickland also can be chalked up in that category.’

So did the Persephone incident. She killed that Magitek Engineer for no reason. But what's-her-name meant nothing to me. Neither did the slaves. Or the little princess. What am I really, then?

Yes. I think it is finally time you find that out, because, by the gods, you are a fucking disgrace to your kind.

What…

Savri

Phosi began to answer me, but she suddenly froze and began turning into her liquid.

Thinking we were in trouble, I looked around, scanning the surroundings with the beam of my flashlight, but saw nothing.

‘Phosi… what’s going on?’ I asked, but instead of responding, she only gave me a toothy smile and strands of her wet hair shot out towards me and painfully wrapped themselves around my torso. Instinctively, I reached out for them, but that only caused me to burn my flesh hand in the acid that made up Phosi’s body. Soon the hair tendrils also began to burn themselves through my body, causing me to scream out in pain.

But then there was a ruckus and all the pressure around me disappeared.

‘I think that’s quite enough,’ Lilyth, now in her Hellborn form, said, holding “Phosi” down to the floor by her neck with her metal arm, which, in the light of my dropped flashlight, I saw was made out of liquid shadow and looked as if it was just bones.

The furball also appeared to have grown a pair of black-feathered wings.

Not… just… fun… Abi… lities… I… see…, I thought through the haze of agonising pain, and began to heal myself.

Unhand me now, fleshling!’ Phosi screeched.

‘I don’t think I will,’ Lilyth shook her head. ‘You just hurt a dear friend of mine, monster. As such, I highly recommend you go back to whatever dark pit in Phosi’s soul you came out of.’

Or what? Are you this willing to kill your friend?’

‘I was dealing with one like you of my own before. If the Huntress caused me to start hurting people I love, I would want them to put me out of my misery.’

To support Lilyth’s claims, Persephone, also in her Hellborn form, and Aki rushed up to the furball’s side. There was no hesitation in their eyes, and, likely realising she had no chance, the monster stopped struggling.

Very well,’ she conceded. ‘Be warned though, fleshlings. I will be watching, and I will feast on your bones.

You are not making a great case for not killing you,’ Lilyth said coldly. ‘ Sure, you can kill one or more of us if you are lucky, but the rest of us are more than capable of ensuring your killing streak ends right there.’

Not-Phosi didn’t respond. Instead, her body shuddered and resolidified.

We didn’t get time to fully process what had just happened as Lilyth and Ren fell to their knees, holding their heads.

The fucking tree. It must have done something to Phosi and now… FUCK.

‘Okay, it is time to burn this fucking place to the motherfucking ground!’ I began barking orders, the realisation that our timetable had just been cut short quickly sinking in.

Likely having come to the same conclusion, Persephone and Aki began rushing towards the trunk, but before they made it more than a few steps, a pillar beam of purplish-silver light erupted from the floor in front of them, barring their way.

FUCK! More angelic magic!

‘Caei!’ I turned towards the fourth lovebird. ‘Make us a path down. NOW!’

Barely dodging another pillar of magical light, Caei cast [Rock Burst] on the floor and jumped down it even before all the rubble finished falling.

‘Go!’ I shouted to the rest of the group.

‘What a-’Aki began to protest, but I quickly cut her off.

‘Now!’

Begrudgingly, Aki obeyed and followed Caei into the hole. I knew that there would likely be a reckoning for that order, but I would gladly accept the consequences if it meant I got as many people out as possible.

‘I can’t get through the floor,’ Caei shouted seconds before a beam of light erupted beneath her, partially engulfing her and causing her magical burns on her right leg and arm.

Persephone managed to keep her from falling down and pushed her out of the way of the pillar cast to finish her off.

‘To the stairs!’ I shouted and began running, sending jolts of pain through my hurt hip.

[Soothe Pain]

It was another thing I would likely regret, but it was better to be unable to walk for a day than to be dead.

Then again, I might not actually live long enough to suffer the consequences. Win-win!
