Chapter 66: Kael Goes Looking Himself

# THE CORE BENEATH## Arc 2: Village of the Hollow## Chapter 66: Kael Goes Looking HimselfHe'd been listening to Pebble's reports through the sense for a year now, secondhand impressions of tunnels and darkness and distance, brief flickers of instinct and motion rather than anything he could actually picture with real clarity. Something about the foreign woman's arrival had made all of it suddenly, uncomfortably abstract in a way it had never felt before, the specific realization that an entire world's worth of dark and distance existed just beyond his territory's edge, and he'd never once actually stood in it himself."I want to see it," Kael said, through Grix, the decision arriving less as a plan and more as a restlessness he could no longer talk himself out of. "Not through the sense. Not through Pebble's account of it after the fact. Actually go out there myself."Grix went very still, the specific stillness that meant genuine worry rather than simple surprise. "Why now.""Because someone walked here from somewhere I can't even imagine," Kael said, "and I've spent a year running this place without ever once actually standing in the dark it grew out of. Feels like I should know what that dark actually looks like, if I'm going to keep making decisions about it."---Grix argued against it, gently but persistently, for the better part of an hour. "Don't know what's actually out there," he said. "Pebble's fast. You're not. Cairn's tough. You're not that either. If something goes wrong, you're not built the way the rest of us are.""I know," Kael said. "That's kind of the point. Everyone who goes out there risks something. I've never once had to risk anything myself. Just watched, and worried, and made decisions from somewhere safe."Grix sat with that a long moment, something reluctant giving way in his expression. "Then I'm coming too," he said, final. "Not asking permission for that part."---They went together three nights later, Kael stepping through his own doorway directly into the deepest claimed passage Hollowreach maintained, the transition from familiar stone to genuinely unclaimed dark arriving more abruptly than he expected. The air changed first, cooler, stiller, carrying a mineral quiet that felt entirely different from the lived-in warmth of the settlement behind them. Then the light changed, Grix's small lantern the only thing holding back a darkness that seemed to actually press against it rather than simply existing around it, thick and total in a way no surface-world night had ever prepared him for. "This is what Pebble walks through every night," Kael said, quiet, something in his chest tightening at the thought."Every night," Grix confirmed. "Farther than this, most times."Kael reached out and touched the tunnel wall, rough and cold under his palm, ordinary rock that had never once been shaped by anything he'd built or named or chosen. It was humbling in a way he hadn't expected, the specific reminder that Hollowreach, for all its growth, was still only a small, warm pocket carved out of something vastly larger and entirely indifferent to his presence in it.---They walked for nearly an hour, deeper than Kael had ever personally gone, Grix's steady presence beside him the only thing making the growing unfamiliarity bearable. At one point they passed a side passage that curved away into deeper dark, and Kael felt something through the sense, faint and strange, an echo of presence too distant and unfamiliar to properly place."Feel that?" he asked."Feel something," Grix said, careful. "Not sure what."They didn't follow it. Kael understood, standing there in the genuine dark with nothing but Grix and a small lantern between him and whatever unknown thing his sense had brushed against, that some frontiers deserved caution rather than curiosity, at least for tonight.---They turned back before the lantern burned low, and Kael walked the whole way home in a thoughtful quiet, turning over everything the darkness had made him feel. He thought about the foreign woman, still resting in Hollowreach's care, who had walked through darkness like this for who knew how long before finding her way to somewhere safe. He thought about Pebble, doing this every single night without complaint, treating this vast, indifferent dark as simply the shape of its job."Worth it?" Grix asked, once they were finally back within the warm, familiar boundaries of claimed territory."Yeah," Kael said, quiet. "Needed to actually feel how big it all is. How small we still are, compared to it."He didn't know yet what that unfamiliar presence in the side passage had actually been, or whether it mattered, or whether it was simply one more thing waiting out there for someone braver or more foolish than him to eventually find. He suspected, walking the last stretch home beside Grix, that he'd just crossed a line he wouldn't be able to uncross, some quiet shift from a man who managed danger from a safe distance into someone who'd finally, deliberately, chosen to stand inside it.
