Chapter 22 - Choosing a destination!

Wendy then began explaining the reason that the two of them temporarily went on an excursion so suddenly. Hearing why it happened, Vanessa calmed down and nodded her head.

"You did the right thing. If you are going to be traveling with us, you should at least keep your adventurer status up to date. We can't expect you to sneak into every town or city we go to. That would simply cause too much of a mess." She said in approval.

Then she told us to bring our stuff over so they could put everything in the carriage. I was once again quite surprised at how little the technology of this world has developed. With the addition of magic, many processes of technology should have been done through magic, right?

"Umm. My stuff is in my own storage space." I said. The others looked over with surprise. I was still rather confused about the situation since I haven't had much direct contact with others. Even when I was getting my adventurer's guild card up, all I did was quietly do missions on my own and so my only frame of reference really was my mother Alice.

"I guess it makes sense. The daughter of the Demon King showed impressive skill in Space magic and with how convenient the magic is of course she would have her clones also specialize in them." The hero said. Then he asked if he could store some of his stuff in her storage space.

"Luke! How can you trust-" But Vanessa was then cut off by a stern voice on the side.

"You already said she is traveling with us now. What's your problem with demons anyways? Even Mellie has less aggression towards her." Wendy replied. On the side, Mellie tried to calm down the situation as Felicia then walked up to Luke and asked if he knew why she was so aggressive towards her.

"Huh. Well, I can say for certain that her animosity is not some deep seated hatred towards you, don't worry. She is just like that to everyone at first. It's most likely a sense of jealousy for the added members of the group. After all, you have seen that the hero is the only male in the group." Wendy said, likely to calm me down and show her support.

To be honest, I didn't really mind the antics of the group. Even Vanessa's animosity was actually quite a curious thing for me. I have heard of emotions like hers but have never seen them in person let alone be the target of such animosity.

So I simply watched the antics unfold ahead of me and smiled all the way. Since we were now all ready, they were all heading out while bringing their stuff. Of course they would not be hauling and storing everything themselves for this trip so a few servants came out and started packing everything.

In just a few minutes, all of their stuff was stored in a carriage and we then joined a convoy that was headed to a similar destination to ours.

Even if he had only known about our plans in the end, the Emperor was still able to quickly prepare everything for us while we were waiting.

In another carriage, it was here that we started to plan out our first destination.

"As usual, should we simply randomly choose a city or town to start with? Or maybe should we first look around for a village first?" Luke said. It was quite important to find a proper starting point for this adventure. After all, we may not have that much time to explore the place. If the Empire finds the territory of the Demon King and the last general under him, we would have to halt this exploration and head back to face him.

Of course, the hero duties would only come into play once the place is discovered. Out of interest, I asked if Alice knew where the last general's location was and if the Demon King was there. Although a little disgruntled, she ultimately did check for me their location.

"Looks like it's quite deep. there are only various aquatic demons and the Demon King there. Closest people are... quite far away. Is that fine for you?" She asked in my mind. Although she was outwardly annoyed, I could tell that she was not truly upset about the situation.

After all, there are not that many people she speaks to. Being the only one that isn't strictly a research clone is probably a sigh of relief.

I was able to understand this when I then heard her asking about my days so far. With a chuckle, I started relaying to her how I have been. It was small talk, but it still gave me a glimpse of the warmth of family.

When I was almost done, I felt a pat on my shoulder and looked to see Wendy looking at me.

"What are you so focused on? We decided where we will start our adventure. We will be starting like how Luke had initially began exploring by going to a village in the area and slowly leading to heading towards the capital of the territory." She reminded me. I thanked her for the reminder and then focused on the situation at hand while saying my goodbyes to Alice in my mind.

The convoy was already started while I was thinking. Due to the technology available to the high levels of the empire, nobles were able to experience all kinds of luxuries like smoother pathing with magic. But due to society still being relatively backwards, this still is limited to only those of more affluent lifestyles.

Looking outside the window, I saw the flat fields passing by our view and the road paved by the empire headed along this way.

After some time, the party started to talk some more about various stories of adventures that they had gone on. Listening to them from this perspective was quite interesting. Because I have been watching their party for quite a while, some of the stories I could recognize as something that I saw from above before. But hearing them in this manner was also a nice change.

Then there were also some stories that were new to me.

Although they were not as dramatic or as heart pumping as they would be later, it was still nice to see the more human parts of their adventures. From helping an innkeeper find his lost daughter to facing monsters for the first time, it was another perspective of these members that I have always looked at from this higher up angle.

Looking at their strength now, it is hard to imagine any time that they were weak.

After some time traveling and listening to stories, we finally stopped at a rather open and clear area. I had not introduced it, but we were actually traveling with a large adventurer group.

This was a regularly scheduled trip to Beast man territory for the merchants we were with to go through. Because of this, there was a regular adventuring party that they usually went with and trusted. It was just that their group recently had some members sick and some knocked out so we were able to take some of the space that was left.

It seemed rather convenient for us, but Luke reassured me that this was normal. After all, adventuring was a career that could be ended at any point when encountering something way above our level.

Looking around, I saw that most of the other adventurers were stationed all around the main merchant convoy. We were located near the rear because of the Hero party's overall strength. In addition, any attack from the rear would require a focused group of coordinated fighters. After all, the only creatures that attack from the back are those that are on the more intelligent side.

The others maintained a strong surveillance of the area by sending scouts around to check the path ahead of us as well as the area around nearby. Since they were out working so hard, I decided to do my part and scanned with my spatial magic.

Looking through this perceptive sense, I found several plants that seemed familiar to me. Looking through my storage space, I saw the copied requests from the Adventurer's guild that had several plants that I saw in the field.

"I found some plants that I need for my request. Can I go ahead and take them?"

"Go ahead! Usually during requests, you are not supposed to stay away from the target of protection, but we can handle things from here. Just in case, go invisible to do so and quickly return. We would not be able to explain why a member of ours went off on their own after all." Luke said while giving em a thumbs up.

Surprisingly, the rest of them were also okay with it and Vanessa too did not say a word. I guess that while adventuring, the rules of adventurers surpasses her need to maintain her noble etiquette.

Because of the given permission, I quickly took out the flying carpet and landed on it. Then flying out the window carefully, I quickly went invisible so that others could just see some rustling after the window of the carriage opened.

"Huh? Did something move out of that carriage window?" An adventurer nearby said. He was one of the several captains of the adventuring group stationed here and was among the other merchants and their convoy.

"That is the carriage ridden by our new guests this trip. maybe they wanted a better clearer view of the surroundings? It probably is nothing." A merchant's worker said nearby. Then they continued to drive the horse to carry the carriage he was riding on forward.

With a wipe of my forehead, I sighed with relief that I was not found. Then I quickly headed to the points that I had marked and quickly lucked the various herbs that were requested of me.

At first, I yanked the plants without regard for their condition which damaged them and even lead to some juices spilling out. So I started picking them more carefully afterwards.

This was my first mission in a little while so it would be better if I kept a good impression. So I decided to carefully remove the remaining plants so that they were a little better intact for storage.

I was able to finish this in a fairly reasonable amount of time, as when I returned the others in the party had not encountered any questioning yet. Maybe it was also due to the hero party being the hero party.

After all, the hero himself is rather popular and famous for good reason. Maybe some of them recognized him?

I have collected enough plants for today and the remaining ones can only be found closer to the actual territory belonging to the Beast men. After all, the plants I collected today were all found on this first day so they are all relatively close to the capital of the Aloph Empire anyways. So the needs in terms of these plants are rather minimal.

Maybe these collection tasks are more so a gift for me since Wendy had brought me in to the adventurer's guild?

Some moment to rest, we were then stopped as there had been sightings of monsters nearby. Far off in the front, my perception did not reach so the scouts were the first to find these foes. Thankfully, we had only run into an encampment of goblins.

With the experience that the adventuring group that we were guarding with had, there was no injuries even after facing that small skirmish.

It was during this time that I could get a clearer view on how normal adventuring parties normally fought. Just like in the games in Alice's common sense, there were first scouts who would detect and determine the amount of foes that we would be facing. Then they would taunt and bring a small group of enemies over by baiting themselves alone.

Because they only saw a single person, the amount of enemies that would follow would not be that much. Then they would be dragged over to an encirclement prepared by the rest of the squad in their absence.

In the front were those in either heavy armor or wielding shields. As the frontline, they would hold off the initial wave of attacks.

Then either behind them or next to them were various other careers that had to do with melee combat. Mostly warriors who relied on strength and strong weapons to easily break through foes, but there were also some rarer archetypes in this group that stood out.

In the right side, there was a captain who had a similar positioning to a monk class. Using unarmed combat and various breathing techniques, they were easily able to move around and eliminate individual powerful goblins with a solid strike to the head.

Then on the left side there was a powerful hidden assassin who snuck around and slayed the goblin long ranged fighters.

All of this was within my perception to see. As a group, they were all quite formidable as they all worked together to entangle and slowly eliminate their foes.
