One of the vendors grabbed a handful of vegetables and tried to give them to Leng Yuan.
"Young man, thank you. Thank you all."
As he spoke, he stuffed handfuls of his remaining vegetables into the hands of each staff member.
"These vegetables aren’t worth much. I grew them myself. If you don’t mind, please take them home to eat."
’He wouldn’t dare go back to sell vegetables again anyway, and he still had more at home. He might as well just give some away.’
The other two vendors followed his lead, trying to press their goods on the group. Leng Yuan received the most.
Seeing how simple and honest the vendors were, the staff members didn’t dare accept the gifts. In the end, one of them simply took out some money and bought the items instead.
The others did the same, stuffing money into the three vendors’ hands before hurriedly leaving, afraid they would try to return it.
The three vendors’ eyes grew red. "We’ve met good people."
’To think they’d meet so many good people here.’
Leng Yuan also tried to pay, but the three refused to take anything from him. He was their savior; what was the big deal about him taking a handful of vegetables or a few eggs?
Unable to win the argument, Leng Yuan shot a look at Lu Yuanbin, who was standing to the side.
Lu Yuanbin understood immediately. He stepped forward and bought all of their remaining vegetables, eggs, and grain.
’He had to eat anyway,’ he thought. ’It didn’t matter where he bought his food.’
He gave each of them a little extra, making sure to cover the cost of the items in Leng Yuan’s hands as well.
The three vendors were so overcome with gratitude toward Leng Yuan that they were about to kneel and thank him.
Leng Yuan quickly pulled them up, offered a few words of comfort, and sent them on their way.
’These people probably won’t be coming back to sell things anymore,’ Leng Yuan thought. ’What they went through today was enough to scare them for a long time.’
’But there were some things he was powerless to change.’
’Still, he believed that things would definitely get better. Besides, his wife had told him a major turning point was coming soon.’
After the three vendors left and they were outside, Lu Yuanbin looked over at He Qingqing. He saw she was holding two hens, her expression dejected, and couldn’t help but ask, "Are you here at the black market to sell these chickens?"
He Qingqing’s eyes lit up. "Do you want to buy them?"
Lu Yuanbin hadn’t intended to, but seeing the hopeful look in the girl’s eyes, he nodded as if by some strange impulse.
By the time he came to his senses, he had already given her the money.
A ten-yuan bill.
Seeing it, He Qingqing looked troubled. "I don’t have any small change to break this."
Lu Yuanbin wasn’t concerned. "Your hens are plump and look delicious. A hen like this would go for at least eight yuan on the black market. You’re selling them too cheap."
Normally, a hen wasn’t that expensive, but on the black market, they weren’t cheap either.
But He Qingqing was stubborn.
"No, we agreed on six yuan, so it’s six yuan."
’If her grandmother hadn’t fallen so seriously ill, she would never have sold the chickens to Lu Yuanbin. He was her benefactor, and now she was forced to sell him her chickens. She already felt guilty enough.’
He Qingqing didn’t want to take more money, and Lu Yuanbin didn’t have smaller bills, so the only option was to get the ten-yuan bill changed.
With that in mind, He Qingqing told Lu Yuanbin to wait and ran off.
As soon as He Qingqing left, Lu Yuanbin turned to Leng Yuan, chickens in hand.
"Brother Leng, let’s go back!"
Leng Yuan glanced in the direction He Qingqing had gone.
Lu Yuanbin shook his head. "Forget it. It’s only four yuan."
’He could tell He Qingqing needed the money. He’d just consider it a good deed.’
’After all, Brother Leng had helped him the same way back then.’
’If he hadn’t met Brother Leng, he probably would have starved to death by now.’
Leng Yuan didn’t say much more and left with Lu Yuanbin.
