She watched the crew work the new cannons as she fell. They were quite powerful and highly maneuverable. Fominel had handled all that really well. The shots pierced the nearby waves, creating huge geyser-like splashes.
One crew on the opposite side was already beginning to fire at something in the distance.
I see why no one sails here. These big fish are having a free-for-all on my damn ship.
For a split second, she saw the ramming creature resurface in a bulge nearby as the crew quickly recalibrated the cannons. This was a good opportunity to deal with that problem. Fominel was already on the way for it.
[Vainfall: Terminate]
She fell through the monochrome world, phasing through the sails, ropes, and masts.
One.
She targeted the creature under the waves.
[Frame Selected Entity]
Two.
She zoomed ahead, phasing diagonally through the ship and emerging right above the bulging water.
The creature looked like a seal with a rock for a forehead. It looked prehistoric, but it wasn’t as large as the two she already fought. She didn’t bother wasting time using Inspect and scaled down the spell that she was going to use on the way.
Gripping her spear Manacer tightly, she drove it down in one fluid movement, cutting straight through the water layer.
Three.

Mana sparked through the water as the tip of the spear touched the creature.
She fell on the bulge right after it, splashing prediction dots all around her. Luckily, the creature counted as a piece of ground, and she didn’t phase through it.
Half.
Using the momentum of the landing impact, she drove her gauntleted fist into the creature. Red mana burst from the scales in a giant ripple, splashing prediction dots like a cannon shot as the water began catching up.
As the world caught up, the creature bent at the middle, momentarily taking her underwater. She already had Fominel in her sights; he was near the main mast, extending his manablades.
[Frame Selected Entity]
“Go!” she yelled as she twisted mid-air when Fominel came to a surprised stop.
They’re all getting jumpscared by me. We have to work better on coordination after this.
Fominel rolled away, diving in a quick spiral towards the creature she weakened for him.
Darya let herself fall towards the deck. Seris was already looking up at her. Nerima and Sarka were next to her, seemingly receiving treatment.
Lurim was also nearby.

Darya used a skill for her soft landing because she didn’t want to spook them.
She splashed down near them like a water meteor and slid on the wet wood.
“Whoa!” Nerima exclaimed, caught by surprise. Lurim also jumped an inch off the floor, along with the other mages who were maintaining the shield. Only Seris was ready, but she also jolted.
Pushing against a nearby wooden crate with the blunt end of her Manacer, Darya balanced herself before slamming against a wall.
“Princess! Are you hurt?!” Seris asked worriedly.
“No idea yet,” Darya said, panting hard. This was turning out to be more of a workout than she planned. “What’s wrong with Nerima?” she asked.
“Clipped her tail when she got ported onto the deck. All healed now,” Seris said reassuringly.
Lurim came running with Enta, diligently performing the duties of the mana re-supplier.
Darya greeted him with a quick pat on his messy wet hair. Enta seemed even more pumped.
I hope he doesn’t spend another stamina point for excitement!
Darya took the golden enclosure off Lurim’s hands as Seris quickly checked her for injuries with a spell.
She cupped Enta’s small body with her wet hand, trying to calm him down while absorbing mana.
“Princess! What a splendid display of power!” Sarka’s voice came as Nerima slid over eagerly. “I thought we were done for!”
“I was going to dive down. Thought I saw a gap,” Nerima said, sheepishly rubbing the back of her head.
Darya pulled her closer to look at the tail. It had been healed back to pristine condition.
I would’ve been really upset if anything happened to her beautiful tail.
“Maybe you should stop vertical jumps out of the water. Makes it easier for sea monsters to eat you if you’re going to land back on the same spot,” she said, squeezing the girl’s shoulder. “Always jump at an angle so you land somewhere else. Make sure there’s no one with an open mouth there.”
Nerima nodded. “I’ll keep that in mind!”
Seris finished patching up some scratches and cuts. “Seris, clear the porting area for Nerima. It needs to be larger and emptier. We didn’t think about her tail enough.”
Darya had saved the girl from the maw of a monster for her to get injured when she was back on the ship. Nerima was longer than she looked. Getting teleported had stretched her out, and her tail had hit something, likely a crate.
“Master Lam’s on it. It was a bunch of supply boxes. They’re moving it all to the front now.” Seris said quickly. “I’ll also cover the area with a shield bubble next time.”
Oh, I love her. Look at her handling everything!.
“Good!”
Fominel burst up off the side of the ship in a blast of golden feathers.

“Oh, great, that one’s dead,” Darya said with a sigh.
Fominel leapt onto the weather deck, sheathed his manablades, and began panting with his hands on his knees.
Lurim hurriedly took Enta and ran to him, his luminous eyes glowing with excitement. Seris hurried to Fominel as well. He was covered in blood.
Darya followed them, along with Nerima sliding behind.
“Princess,” Fominel panted as he recovered mana from Enta. “What exactly is that new skill you’re using? My heart stops every time you appear out of nowhere!”
“It’s just something I can do now. Sorry, Fom, there was no time to explain it all,” she said with a smile.
“Fascinating, I wonder how it works!” Sarka said curiously.
“I almost forgot how to breathe when you first appeared above me!” Nerima said.
“Basically, I can just appear somewhere near any living thing within line of sight. It’s much faster than flight,” Darya said, giving them the quickest explanation without spilling all the beans.
“What a useful spell!” Sarka remarked.
“Eel to the west!” one of the old merfolk men in charge of spotting yelled, interrupting them.
Fominel handed Enta back to Lurim and started channeling mana. He didn’t even look tired anymore.
He can just switch tiredness off. Warrior training, I suppose.
“Quick, I need the rope!” Nerima said, jumping up and down.
“I’ll deal with this one. It’s already on the way. You can rest for a bit. Don’t rush,” Darya told her. She walked to the edge of the railing, looking ahead. She needed one good glimpse of the eel.
Lurim followed her closely.
She watched the crashing black waves, wondering if she could use the spotting telescope with the Frame Selected Entity.
That has to count as line of sight, doesn’t it?
Fominel was circling above, and he didn’t seem to have the location yet.
Lurim tugged at her dress.
“Hm?” Darya looked at him briefly. He was pointing slightly to the right, and he seemed rather excited about whatever was in that direction.
“Is it the eel, Lurim?” Darya asked, picking the toddler up.
Lurim shook his head, insisting on the direction he was pointing. He was pulling himself forward as if he wanted to go there.
“Whoa, wait, you can’t swim in this water,” Darya told him sternly.
Lurim jabbed at her shoulder.
“Oh, you want me to take you? But that’s dangerous!” She stared ahead. Frame Selected Entity wasn’t a child-safe method of traveling. In any case, she didn’t want Lurim out of the ship.
He was still pointing eagerly in that direction. Even Enta was looking through the bars of his enclosure.
Looking closely, there was something in the distant fog.
“Wait, I see something,” Darya mumbled.
Just then, a long winding black coil burst out of the distant waves. It was as large as a building.
Fominel was already on his way.
“The eel! Wait,” Darya put Lurim down. Seris was already nearby. She gestured at her to pay attention to the boy.
I know him. He might jump off when no one’s watching.
“I’ll check where you want me to and come back,” Darya told him, patting his head reassuringly. He started jumping up and down.
Darya turned back to the coiling eel.
She grabbed her Manacer and leapt off the railing.
[Frame Selected Entity]
Zooming in parallel to the water, she materialized right over the creature about a hundred feet away.
The first thing she noticed on her approach was a white glowing dot under the water. The Eel was twisting away from it. The glow vanished just as soon as she saw it.
A flashbang underwater? What is that?
She saw three more of them, and the eel twisted off each time. Darya didn’t bother casting a spell at the creature. It was already distressed and distracted.
It was also larger than the one she first saw, possibly the same species. She couldn’t deal any meaningful damage without the creature’s head above water or Fominel cutting open a critical weak point.
[Frame Selected Entity]
She refreshed her position before falling too low, reappearing again at a hundred feet off.
It was coming towards us, but something was bothering it underwater.
She saw a glowing white line pass through the black waves. It looked like a falling star, traveling back and into the deep.
Quickly turning to see where it went, Darya saw what Lurim was pointing at earlier.
An island? Over a trench? That’s impossible!
Yet there it was, a jagged-looking small mountain lurking in the thick fog.
She saw several glowing dots near the dark silhouette. There was a pattern to them, like LEDs being lit programmatically. This looked more organic, as if communicating with light.
She was about to hit the water. She needed to fly like Fominel for proper air time. This was a task for a helicopter, not a rock zooming around in straight lines.
[Flying Celestian]
The winds caught her like a polythene bag. Flinging weightlessly over the waves, she used the skill to move towards the island.
[Smooth Slither]
Halfway through twisting around in the cold winds, she saw something white breach the waves below.
There it is, but what the hell is that?!
It was some sort of fish that looked like a ceramic vase. The tail looked faintly iridescent, much fatter compared to Nerima’s. For a moment there, she thought she was looking at an obese mermaid.

Darya hadn’t expected to see a mostly-normal sea creature in the trench meant for Lovecraftian sea monsters. It was also one of her favorite animals.
Alright now, who put glowing Belugas in Vainfall?
