Mila felt as though her world had been turned upside down. Terror gripped her so tightly that she could barely breathe.
"Please... don’t hurt him."
She stretched out a trembling hand, tears streaming uncontrollably down her face.
Her baby’s desperate cries tore at her heart.
"I-I’ll go with you," she pleaded. "Please... give him back."
Max let out a low laugh. He glanced down at the crying infant in his arms before looking back at her.
"He’ll be perfectly safe," he said calmly, "as long as you do exactly what I tell you."
Mila nodded frantically. "I’ll do anything. Just don’t hurt him."
The smile disappeared from Max’s face. Without warning, he pulled a pistol from his waistband and aimed it at her.
Mila froze. Every muscle in her body locked with fear.
"Move." His voice was cold and commanding.
She slowly turned around and walked out of the bedroom, not daring to disobey.
When the housekeeper saw this, she shrieked in fear.
"Get out," Max shouted.
The woman didn’t dare stay there. She bolted away.
Max turned his focus to Mila.
"Don’t try anything clever," he warned. "Take the car keys and head outside."
Mila obeyed every order. Holding her hands where he could see them, she walked out of the mansion.
The guards immediately noticed something was wrong. In an instant, several guns were aimed at Max.
But Max pressed the barrel firmly against Mila’s head.
"Back off," he roared. "If anyone comes any closer, I’ll kill her and the baby."
The guards froze. None of them dared move.
"Drop your weapons," Max ordered. "Now."
Mila’s heart pounded wildly. She could see the hesitation in the guards’ eyes.
Slowly, they lowered their guns.
"Further back."
The guards reluctantly stepped away.
Satisfied, Max shoved the gun harder against Mila’s head. "Walk. Open the car door."
Her legs trembled with every step. More than once, she thought they would give out beneath her. Still, she forced herself forward.
Behind her, Max followed closely, one arm cradling the crying baby while the other kept the gun trained on her. His attention remained fixed on the guards.
His finger rested on the trigger, ready to fire at the slightest movement.
What he failed to notice was a shadow slipping silently over the boundary wall.
Dressed entirely in black, the man moved with the stealth of a hunting panther. Every step was measured. Every movement was silent.
He closed the distance without making the slightest sound.
Mila continued walking toward the car. The icy touch of the gun against her temple made every heartbeat feel painfully loud. Her baby’s cries only deepened her panic.
Tears blurred her vision.
"Please, Max," she begged. "Give him back to me. He needs me."
"Do as you are told," Max snapped. "Or I’ll kill him right here."
A chill shot through Mila’s body. She didn’t dare say another word.
Something caught her eye.
In the wing mirror, she spotted a black figure silently approaching from behind. Her heart skipped a beat. She froze in her tracks.
’Someone is here.’
"Why did you stop?" Max barked impatiently. "Move."
Thinking quickly, Mila stepped directly in front of the mirror, blocking Max’s view.
She remembered the emergency number Dominic had given her. Relief flooded her heart. She knew the rescue had come. Now she only needed to buy a little more time.
More importantly, she had to get her baby back. Taking a steadying breath, she turned toward Max. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the man in black drawing closer.
Only a few more steps.
Max frowned. "I told you to open the door."
Mila immediately opened the rear door. "Please..." Her voice trembled. "Give me my baby. I swear I won’t do anything."
The muzzle pressed harder against her forehead.
She instinctively closed her eyes.
"You don’t make the rules," Max growled. "You’ll drive. The baby stays with me."
Panic surged through Mila.
If Max continued holding the baby, the rescuer wouldn’t be able to act. She had to convince him.
"Please..." she pleaded, struggling to steady her breathing. "He is hungry. I need to feed him."
She looked at the screaming infant. "If he keeps crying, I won’t be able to concentrate on driving."
Max hesitated. His gaze dropped to the baby, whose tiny face had turned bright red from crying.
The endless wailing grated on his nerves. Finally, he clicked his tongue.
"Fine." He thrust the baby toward her. "Make him stop crying. He’s giving me a headache."
The instant the baby was in her arms, Mila hugged him tightly against her chest.
"My baby..."
She kissed the top of his head over and over again, tears falling onto his tiny blanket. Relief almost made her knees buckle.
"Now get in the car."
The gun returned to her forehead.
Mila glanced sideways.
The man in black was barely a foot away.
This was the moment.
Without hesitation, she slipped into the back seat and slammed the door shut.
Bang
A gunshot shattered the air.
Max cried out in agony. He collapsed onto the concrete driveway, clutching his leg as blood rapidly soaked through his trousers. His pistol skidded across the ground.
The man in black stepped forward with unwavering composure, his gun trained directly on Max.
Shock flooded Max’s face.
Inside the car, Mila remained frozen. She clutched her son protectively, her entire body trembling as she watched everything unfold.
The guards rushed over immediately. Their eyes shifted from the mysterious man to the wounded Max.
"Call the police," the man in black ordered.
One of the guards immediately took out his phone.
The man then turned toward Mila. "Madam, are you alright?"
Mila nodded weakly. "I’m... fine."
He opened the door for her. "You should go inside." His eyes shifted toward Max. "We’ll take care of him."
Still holding her baby tightly, Mila stepped out of the car. She glanced at Max.
Blood pooled beneath his injured leg. His face had twisted with pain. Yet the moment he saw her, hatred replaced his agony.
"You tricked me," he spat through gritted teeth. "You are a heartless woman. I did everything for you. I only wanted you to love me. And this is how you repay me? I hate you."
Mila looked at him without the slightest sympathy. "I warned you to leave. You refused. You kept harassing me. You even tried to kidnap my son and me."
Her voice remained calm. "You had a bright future, Max. You destroyed it yourself."
She looked him straight in the eye. "So don’t blame anyone else for the consequences of your own actions."
"You..." Max lunged toward the fallen gun.
The guards reacted instantly.
One kicked the weapon away while the others forced him to the ground. No matter how hard he struggled, he couldn’t move.
The man in black stepped closer. His pistol never wavered.
"If you try anything again, the next bullet won’t hit your leg. It’ll go straight through your head."
Max immediately fell silent.
Without another glance, Mila turned and walked toward the mansion.
"Mila..." Max’s furious shout echoed behind her. "Don’t think you’ll live peacefully. My father will never let this go. He’ll avenge me."
Mila’s footsteps faltered for only a second. A chill ran through her heart. But she never looked back.
Holding her son close, she quietly walked inside the house and closed the door behind her.
