A wave of panic washed over Max. Only then did he realize something.
Dominic hadn’t rescued him. He had delivered him straight into Matteo’s hands.
"W-What are you going to do with me? Hand me over to Matteo?"
Dominic smiled faintly. "What do you think? He ordered me to bail you out. I’m simply carrying out his instructions."
"No..." Max grabbed Dominic’s sleeve desperately. "You can’t. You are loyal to my father. You can’t let Matteo kill me. Please help me."
Dominic slowly lowered his gaze to the hand gripping his sleeve.
That same hand had pointed a gun at Mila and his son. His eyes turned colder.
"Why should I help you? Your father warned you to stay away. You ignored him. You came back. You attacked Felix. You brought disaster upon yourself. Do you really think your father will forgive what you’ve done?"
Max’s shoulders slumped. "When I heard Dad was ill, I couldn’t help but come here."
His eyes reddened. "I just wanted to see him. But Matteo and Felix wouldn’t let me. They blocked me, humiliated me, and beat me. I lost control. I only wanted revenge. So you tried to kill them?"
Dominic asked coldly. "Your father is barely conscious after hearing about Felix. He still doesn’t know you were responsible. If he finds out, he’ll be devastated."
Max lowered his head. For the first time, guilt crept into his heart.
"He loves you more than anyone." Dominic deliberately softened his voice. "He favored you over his legitimate sons. He distanced himself from his own wife and even chose you as his successor. And how did you repay him? You destroyed everything."
Max’s shoulders trembled. "I..."
The words died in his throat.
"You disappointed him," Dominic continued quietly. "He fell ill because of the rumors surrounding you. Even then, he tried to protect you. He wanted you to rebuild your career somewhere else. But you threw away every sacrifice he made for you."
"No... I never meant..."
"Then why did you come back? Why couldn’t you simply stay away?"
"I’m sorry." Max finally broke down.
Tears rolled down his face. "I’ll leave. I’ll never come back. I’ll never go against them again. Please... Help me this once."
Dominic hid the satisfaction in his eyes. ’He has taken the bait.’
But he made a helpless look. "I’m only a subordinate. I can’t betray my employer. He ordered me to deliver you to him."
"I can pay you." Max hurriedly wiped away his tears. "I’ll transfer all the shares my father gave me. Just let me go."
Dominic appeared conflicted. "If I disobey Matteo, he’ll kill me. But..."
He paused before quietly adding, "I can give you one chance."
"Really?" A flicker of hope appeared in Max’s eyes.
Dominic nodded. "I’ll let you go."
He pulled out a bank card and pressed it into Max’s hand. "Go back to Greece. Don’t come back if you want to survive."
Max’s eyes lit up. He curled his fingers around the card. "Thanks, Roman." Relief washed over his face. "I’ll never forget your kindness."
Dominic smirked inwardly. ’Very soon, you will face your destiny.’
But he didn’t show his real intention. "Don’t thank me. I just want you to stay alive."
Max opened the door. He was about to step out when Dominic suddenly called him.
"Wait..."
Max frowned slightly as he looked back at him. As he met his serious gaze, he grew confused.
"Do you have something to say?" he asked.
Dominic held his gaze. "If you simply walk away, Matteo will suspect me."
Max frowned. "What do you want me to do?"
"You need to make it look as though you attacked me and escaped."
Max stared at him in disbelief. "What?"
This man had just helped him. How could he possibly hurt him?
Dominic reached beneath his coat, pulled out a gun, and held it toward him. "Shoot me."
"Wh-What?" Max’s face went pale. "I can’t."
He immediately pushed the gun back toward Dominic. "You just helped me. How can I shoot you?"
"You have to." Dominic’s voice hardened. "If you don’t, Matteo will know I helped you. He’ll kill me."
He grabbed Max’s wrist and forced the gun back into his hand. "Do it."
Max stared at the weapon. He had never fired a gun before. The thought of pulling the trigger terrified him.
What if he killed Dominic?
His hand trembled violently. The gun suddenly felt impossibly heavy.
"No..." His breathing quickened. "I can’t."
"If you can’t shoot me, hit me with it." Dominic’s tone became commanding. "Now."
Max looked at him anxiously. His fingers tightened around the gun. His heart hammered against his ribs. He gritted his teeth.
Then, in a sudden burst of panic, he swung the gun upward and slammed the butt of it against Dominic’s head.
A sharp crack echoed through the car. Pain exploded across Dominic’s skull.
Blood immediately trickled down his forehead. Yet he didn’t cry out. He merely tightened his jaw and endured the pain.
"I-I’m sorry." Max stared at the blood in horror. "I only hit you because you told me to."
He stumbled out of the car and ran.
Dominic watched him disappear before reaching for his handkerchief.
He pressed it against the wound and winced.
"Fuck..."
He touched the blood on his fingers.
"That hurts."
After a moment, he pulled out his phone and dialed Matteo.
"Hello, Matteo..." He deliberately made his voice weak and pained. "That bastard escaped."
"What did you say?" Matteo’s furious roar came through the phone. "I told you to bring him to me. I trusted you. How did he escape?"
"I was driving him back," Dominic explained. "Then he suddenly attacked me."
Matteo cursed, "You are useless. You couldn’t even handle one man. I shouldn’t have trusted you. I should have sent someone else."
Dominic’s brows tightened. He had tried to remain patient, but Matteo’s insults were beginning to test his restraint.
Still, his voice remained calm. "He won’t get far. I secretly planted a tracker in his pocket."
Silence followed. Matteo’s anger immediately faded. Then a sinister smile slowly spread across his face.
"Good. Track him. I want to know exactly where he is going."
"I will."
Dominic ended the call. The moment the screen went dark, the helpless expression disappeared from his face. His eyes turned cold.
"This is the end of Max." A faint, ruthless smile curved his lips.
"And Matteo... You are next."
