For a moment, Aliana thought she must be imagining things when she stumbled back the moment she tried to pass through the door.
Unsure, she stepped cautiously toward the open doorway and raised her hand toward the threshold.
The instant her skin made contact, her heart stopped.
A thin veil of dark energy rippled outward like a stone dropped into calm water, yet her fingers hit a solid, impenetrable surface. It felt as though she were pressing against a seamless wall of glass.
"What the... fuck..." she uttered in sheer disbelief.
Confusion surged through her mind as she stared at the empty space. Clenching her fist, she threw a punch at the invisible barrier, only for her arm to bounce right back.
"What the hell!" she spat in frustration, and only one person came to mind who could pull this off.
"Gavriel..." She shook her head, her breath hitching. "Did he... did he trap me in here?!" As she asked herself that, her gut told her that it could only be him who would dare pull something like this in this house.
"But why? Why would he do that?" she whispered, her brows pulling together as confusion fought with her growing disbelief.
Then slight anger surged through her veins, overriding her shock, and she yelled toward the open doorway, "Gavriel! Where are you?! Let me out!"
Her voice echoed down the vaulted ceiling of the long hallway, bouncing off the quiet walls, but the estate answered with nothing but dead silence.
Cursing under her breath, she slammed her fists directly against the invisible barrier, determined to force her way through. The collision rattled her wrists, but the barrier remained.
Stepping back, she blew out a ragged sigh of frustration and swept her eyes across the room, hunting for her phone to demand answers. But after thoroughly inspecting the room, it was nowhere in sight.
She shoved her wild hair back from her face, her chest heaving, until her eyes landed on the house intercom resting quietly on Gavriel’s side of the bed.
Crossing the room quickly, she picked up the receiver and called the kitchen. It rang once before Winston’s calm voice came through the speaker.
"Madam."
"Winston, where is Gavriel?" Confusion and anger bled into her voice, sending a cold prickle of alarm down Winston’s spine.
"M-Madam, Master left for some urgent business tonight. He will return by morning," Winston reported nervously. Even through the speaker, he could tell she was in a dangerous mood.
"Gone for work?! When?!"
"He left in the evening, madam. I placed a meal for you in the mini-fridge. It only needs to be heated in the suite’s oven. I was told you were resting and would likely sleep through the night."
"I slept through the entire day, Winston! And now I am trapped in my room!" Aliana paused, her chest heaving as her eyes narrowed on the empty doorway. "He did something to this door, didn’t he? You know what he did, right?"
Aliana avoided stating Gavriel’s true identity outright, unsure of how much the butler knew. But deep down, she doubted someone could live with the Devil for so long without discovering his secrets.
Winston went completely silent on the other end of the line and was all the answer Aliana needed.
Anger roared inside her like a living thing.
"You call him, Winston. You call him right now and tell him to let me out," Aliana commanded. Her voice dropped to a chilling calm that made Winston’s heart hammer against his ribs.
Had she been standing in the room with him, she would have seen the ever-composed butler turn as pale as a sheet.
"B-but Madam... I am afraid I cannot reach Master right now," Winston pleaded. "Please, I beg you to be patient. It is only for one night. He will be back in the morning."
"Why? Where did he go? He left without a single note, and my phone is missing!" Aliana’s sharp voice cut through. "You better find a way to contact him, Winston. Otherwise, don’t expect me to sit here like a prisoner waiting for his return."
Winston opened his mouth to explain just how impossible her demand was at the moment, but a sharp click echoed in his ear as she cut the line.
For a long moment, the old butler stood frozen in the quiet room, staring blankly at the silent phone in his hand. He swallowed hard and murmured in disbelief, "Madam can be just as scary as Master."
Letting out an anxious sigh, panic began to set in for Winston. He knew all too well that leaving his mistress in the dark without a proper explanation was a recipe for disaster.
With his shaky hands, he quickly dialled the one person he always turned to whenever absolute chaos broke loose... Cillian.
.....
An hour must have passed before a car rolled to a silent stop at the Valentine Residence.
The moment Cillian stepped out into the night air, he could already hear the commotion echoing from the upper floors.
"This is going to be troublesome," he murmured under his breath.
But instead of walking through the main entrance, he headed towards the garden area that faced Gavriel’s room. Coming to a stop beneath the window, Cillian’s chocolate-brown eyes lifted towards the full moon, which was nearing its peak.
Slowly, his eyes turned crimson, and in the next instant, his feet left the ground as he levitated towards the second-floor window.
Inside the room, Aliana was gripping a heavy wooden chair.
"Out of the way, Winston!" she warned, her voice trembling with adrenaline. "Or don’t blame me if you get hurt when I break this damn barrier!"
On the other side of the threshold, Winston stood with his hands raised pleadingly in the air. "Madam, I urge you to calm down. Master must have a valid reason for doing this. Please, eat your meal and rest. Master would want you to take care of yourself."
"Eat my meal? What makes you think I would listen to him when he has locked me up without a single word of explanation!" Aliana fired back, her anger ringing through the suite. "I know you know where he is, yet you still refuse to tell me!"
"M-Madam... it would be best if you heard the truth directly from him. Please put the chair down before you hurt yourself," the poor butler fretted as he tried to reason with her.
His cautious answers only pushed Aliana closer to her limit. She gritted her teeth, her hands tightening around the wood.
It was not simply about being locked away, nor was it a refusal to wait for Gavriel to return. It was an intense, gnawing pull deep within Aliana’s chest that was driving her to the edge.
In her heart, she knew something was not right. Gavriel would not have vanished into the night for ordinary business right after what they had shared.
She would be naive to believe that lie. Her own powers were stirring restlessly beneath her skin, whispering to her that she could no longer ignore. That wherever he was right now, he was not alright.
Call it a woman’s intuition, but Aliana was hell-bent on trusting her gut.
Just as she decided she had had enough and raised the chair to hurl it at the barrier, a smooth voice called out from behind her.
"I wouldn’t do that if I were you."
Aliana froze mid-action, her entire body going rigid at the unexpected voice.
She spun around with the chair raised, ready to hurl it at the intruder, when Cillian quickly called out, "Don’t throw that! It’s me!"
Aliana narrowed her eyes before slowly lowering the chair to the floor.
For a long moment, she simply blinked, completely stunned to see a familiar face outside her bedroom window.
"Cillian?" she murmured in utter surprise. "You are... here. Outside my room."
Then the reality of where he was finally hit her.
"My room... is on the second floor!"
Her breath caught as her gaze shifted towards his eyes, only to notice they were glowing red through the dim light of the room.
"Oh God... Y-you... are you also...?" Aliana began backing away in sheer shock, unable to finish the question.
Winston, on the other hand, silently prayed that neither he nor Master Cillian would get skinned alive for giving the mistress a heart attack. Heaven forbid if anything happened to her, because neither of them could even enter through the barrier to help her.
’Why on earth couldn’t you have just used the front door, Master Cillian!’ Winston screamed in silent panic.
"M-Madam, please stay calm. There is no need to panic," Winston piped up hastily. "Master Cillian is only here to help."
Meanwhile, Cillian couldn’t help but chuckle at Aliana’s flabbergasted expression. He was thoroughly enjoying the shock on her face.
"My dear sister-in-law, please accept my apologies for making such a dramatic entrance," Cillian flashed her his signature grin. "I could hear your lovely threats echoing all the way down the driveway, so I thought, why not take the shortcut."
