Minutes later, Kossuth was finally allowed inside, but only to a special meeting room where Isdis had interviewed the maids before. The room itself might’ve looked normal, but this was a discardable blast chamber where Merlin and Kali had loaded several tons of destruction magic and deadly spells to easily kill anyone inside.
The maid who greeted Kossuth inside already knew that and was ready to nuke both herself and Kossuth out of existence if anything went wrong. Arad and his wives were all out now, so the place was vulnerable, and the vampire guards were forced to let Kossuth inside in fear of the empire’s safety.
Kossuth sat on her chair and glanced at the maid, quickly realising a few important things. That girl was young, and Kossuth wasn’t certain if she was even nineteen years old, but the red eyes, sharp nails, and pale skin made one thing clear: she was already a creature of the night.
It wasn’t just human nobles who applied to become a part of Arad’s maids; other races did so as well, and this maid had been a vampire since Vlad’s time. When she heard that he was recruiting maids, she made it here and managed to get the job.
She smelled like lemon, wore no makeup, and even her maid outfit was far too revealing, boasting a short skirt with a simple white apron above her naked torso. And even while standing in front of a true divine, she seemed to lack all traces of fear or care.
The maid clearly wasn’t all that strong, just a powerful high vampire who could use divine magic pulled out of Eris. It didn’t explain her casual attitude and relaxed expressions when facing an actual divine.
The maid sat at the table instead of her chair, put one leg on the other, and opened her mouth with one finger to show Kossuth her vampire fangs. "See those? Vampire fangs, beautiful, aren’t they?"
Kossuth smiled. "You think a vampire can intimidate me?"
The maid looked at her for a long second, blinked several times, and then burst laughing and held her stomach. "Of course you won’t be intimidated; are you taking me for a fool?" She glared directly at Kossuth’s eyes with hers glowing red. "Bitch, I mean I only respect my two lords, and you can eat shit and die. What brought you here when we’re busy? You either play by our rules or fuck off."
The room’s temperature started increasing as the two glared at each other, and Kossuth cracked into a smile. "Talking to a goddess like that, do you seek death?" The maid smiled from ear to ear as her short hair glowed faintly silver from divine magic, and her red eyes flashed as if to leak the madness boiling in that rotten skull of hers.
"Never faced someone who doesn’t fear death?" The maid pulled her face back and looked at Kossuth with a smug smile. "I’m here to make sure you aren’t trouble. I only respect Lady Eris first, and Lord Arad second. You’re on the bottom of my list, lower even than a toilet."
Kossuth had to weigh her options well since this maid was clearly not right in the head, and any wrong word could easily lead to a fight. If she were to kill one of Arad’s maids here, he would never meet her, and she would turn him into an enemy. Did the other maids inside think about this before sending this one to meet her? Why did they pick this nutball?
She quickly checked the maid with her divine sense and found several interesting things. First, this maid was an absolute Eris fanatic, and she had been this way even before Eris became a goddess. Apparently, about fifty years ago, Eris and this maid clashed as vampire enemies, and Eris came out victorious. After that, Eris kept her as a slave and dissected her in several research sessions about vampiric anatomy before discarding her later.
She doesn’t just worship Eris now; she is in love with pain and getting tortured by her, which allows her access to far more divine power than regular paladins. Every time this maid feels pain or gets killed in battle, she gets a large power boost of vampiric and divine magic. But she gets the strongest boost when killed by Eris herself.
"So? What is this test like?" Kossuth asked, and the maid grinned. She had fallen for it, and the maid couldn’t have hoped for things to have gone any better. There was no way any one of them could stop her, and the only two who stood a chance were Arad himself and Kali, so the only option the maids had was to stall for time.
The situation had turned from a potential fight to a mind clash between two ancient creatures, a time divine goddess and a vampire that had lived for centuries. The maid didn’t come here with any clear plan, since it was Isdis’s job to interview and allow people, so she had to make things up as she went.
She lifted her thin and pale hand as a large grin covered her face. The veins on her wrist and the back of her hand were clearly visible as her nails grew longer and sharper, looking toward Kossuth with a mischievous giggle.
"You’re new here, and Arad hasn’t seen you yet. Now, call it. Where you should sit?" She then quickly pointed at Kossuth’s face. "Get it wrong, and I’ll kick you out. Take your time before words come out."
Kossuth stared at her with a smile and chuckled as her deep draconic voice leaked out a bit. That alone had made the maid sweat, and not because she was afraid for her own safety, but because Kossuth might just decide to blow the entire private quarter.
"You’re trying to buy time, but I’m nice, so I’ll play with you." Kossuth leaned forward. "You gave a question that can’t have an answer since this place is full of many people of different species. If it was purely draconic, then I clearly stand above you, but since it isn’t, a safer option would be that I’m below everyone else, even slaves if you have them in here."
Kossuth’s answer was spot on, since due to her strength and standing as a divine goddess, she can easily stand above many even if she jumped in here with force. None of the maids can even look at her the wrong way without risking Isdis or Arad yelling at them later for antagonizing something that can blow the entire mortal world.
The maid took a deep breath and sighed before putting her grin again. "You’re right, so how about we have you follow the rules and be obedient for a while?"
Kossuth smiled, rested her feet on the table, and leaned back. "Fine by me, I’ll wait. I’ve got all the time in the world." She looked at the maid with a grin. "So, care to tell me why you dress like that? A naked torso with just an apron covering it, a skirt so short that I can clearly see beneath it, and it’s not like what you’re wearing beneath is good at covering anything up. Even your legs, toeless fishnet stockings in high heels, you don’t look like a maid at all."
"I like dressing like this because it pisses Lady Eris off. I love it when she gets angry and yells at me." It wasn’t long after that Merlin pulled everyone to merge into her transformation, and Kossuth just let herself get sucked in to skip the waiting.
