The Dread Knight's Rage

Chapter 198: The Right to Lead

Lately, if Solomon wasn’t in the company of his fiancés, he was with his siblings.

As a way to thank the Amazons for allowing them to stay, the horsemen did much of the hunting for the tribe.

At the moment, the four of them were heading back, with animals more than three times their size perched on their shoulders.

"Man, I’m tired of waiting for Tavian to get back..." Everett complained. "The anticipation is killing me. I hate reconnaissance."

Dakota was the only one not carrying anything, instead, she walked beside her oldest brother while holding his hand.

"I would have thought that you would be happy to have Tavian gone. With him not around, you’re free to perv on his sister as much as you like."

"I don’t perv. I flirt. I entice."

"""Slut."""

"I am not a-"

Everyone went back to ignoring Everett as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

"You know, it may be strange of me to say, but I think I actually like it here. If we had doors with locks and indoor plumbing, this place would be a paradise." Nila sighed contentedly.

"Thinking about moving here to live out your happiest of days with our undead acquaintance?" Dakota’s jest brought about snickers from the rest of the group.

"HE IS NOT MY BOYFRIEND!"

Solomon had remained abnormally silent during the group’s hunting excursion. He worked without opening his mouth and carried the bulk of what they hunted.

The only proof his family had that he was ’fine’ was in how he looked after his sisters. Keeping hold of Dakota’s hand and lifting Nila with telekinesis before she could step into a pile of brown and squishy.

He didn’t show any signs of participating in the conversation until Dakota brought up the object of his current fascination.

"So Dean Raidis was a big snake all along... I honestly can’t believe it."

"I can." Nila skipped along. "Auntie always said that Grandpa was some kind of powerful shapeshifter. She seemed to get really antsy whenever it seemed I might make him mad."

"You? Making someone mad?" Everett let his jaw drop sarcastically. "I can’t even fathom it."

Nila stuck out her chest while assuming a haughty air. "I’m choosing to ignore you because I am a lady, and ladies don’t stoop to indulge in mudslinging with an imbecile, baby-winged, smug, shit faced..."

Solomon was always surprised by the amount of profanity that his sister knew. Even he, who had grown up with other edgy young boys, felt as if he were outclassed in the field.

"I don’t care about the fact that he was some kind of snake. I care that the other deathless seemed to know him intimately. It seemed to be a very hostile relationship."

"Any chance of you playing the stooge and just asking?"

"As if they would tell me something like that." Solomon rolled his eyes. "They still haven’t even told me what their true purpose is."

"Are you nice to them when they talk to you?" Dakota looked up at her brother.

"No." Bansha blurted.

"Hush, girl." Solomon chided.

Solomon was already playing pretend with the Society of Fergal. He didn’t believe he could afford to do it with the deathless as well. There were simply far too many variables and risks of being exposed.

As the group approached the village with their spoils, many of the inhabitants rushed out to meet them.

The Amazons and Dark Fae were a very kind people. In appreciation of the horsemen doing all of the hunting, they waited for them to return only to shower them with floral wreaths and handmade trinkets.

A young Amazon woman placed an orange wreath around Solomon’s neck, surprising him slightly. Though not as much as the peck she gave him afterward.

"H-Hey!" He backed away.

The girl giggled and pushed a wooden effigy into his chest.

The totem was hand-carved and looked to have taken a fair amount of time. It depicted a figure on horseback, carrying a spear. Behind its back, a miniature sun hung behind him like a symbol.

"Soleil du matin." She smiled before skipping away to join the rest of her family.

Solomon stood in place, completely stunned.

"You’re all very popular here, you know? Especially among the younger generation."

When Solomon looked over his shoulder, Giselle was sprawled across Bansha’s back as if she had always been there.

He momentarily glanced around at the rest of his siblings who were receiving similar attention.

"I am sure you must be weary from your hunt, but I was wondering if I could have a moment of your time. It will not take long, I assure you."

Solomon tilted his head suspiciously. "Ah... sure."

Giselle pointed in a singular direction, and Bansha trotted along at her behest. Sighing, Solomon followed along while stuffing the wooden gift into his pocket.

Outside the village, Giselle hung from a tree branch by her legs like a little tomboy. "I wanted to talk to you about my sister."

"I-I’m sorry if you.. heard us." Solomon rubbed the back of his head.

"Everyone has heard you by now, Solomon. We’re all immune to it. That’s not what I wanted to talk about."

Solomon didn’t know whether to be relieved or embarrassed.

"It’s about... Our home." Giselle rubbed her knuckles uncomfortably. "I want to return and lead our people through these troubled times, and I want her to occupy half of the throne with me. But so far, she has been... unreceptive to the idea."

Solomon could not help but blink in surprise. Yari had said nothing to him about any of this.

"I need your help convincing her to join me. I know that you can make her see the necessity of the two of us reclaiming the throne and putting things right!"

Solomon casually stroked Bansha’s ears as she placed her head in his lap. "Necessity... may be a stretch."

"You don’t think that she would be an exceptional queen?"

"I didn’t say that, since obviously my love would be amazing at whatever she tried her hand at."

Giselle rolled her eyes.

"I’m only saying that if Yari-"

Solomon’s head snapped toward the village abruptly.

Though nothing seemed out of place, he couldn’t help but feel as though something was wrong.

Just as he started to cut his meeting with Giselle short, an arc of blue power shot into the sky, and a fearsome blizzard consumed ten kilometers of forest.

Solomon recognized the power immediately.

’Everett..!’
