Chapter 573: Chapter 573: Justice
Chutang walked forward and saw the scene within the gates.
Just as she’d expected, Xie Anbai was in a standoff with Xie Anjun. A crowd of servants and household guards stood together, looking as if they were about to throw Xie Anbai out.
Xie Anbai’s gaze swept over the crowd, his voice chillingly cold.
"Father’s body is barely cold, and you’re already this eager to throw me out, Elder Brother?"
Xie Anjun clasped one hand behind his back and snorted. "You know full well why I’m doing this! All these years, you’ve been a dissolute rake, dragging the name of the Duke Zhongyong Mansion through the mud! Father berated you time and again, but you had no intention of changing your ways, stubbornly doing as you pleased! If you weren’t so incorrigibly wicked, Father would never have fallen into such a deep despair that it led to this!"
He delivered the speech with such righteous fury that anyone hearing it would think Xie Anbai had angered Marquis Zhongyong to death.
Xie Anjun glanced around and raised his voice. "What are you all standing around for? Get him out of here, now!"
"Who dares!"
Xie Anbai roared. His eyes, which usually crinkled with a smile, were now faintly bloodshot, their gaze as sharp and cold as the edge of a blade.
The servants had never seen him like this. They were all stunned into silence, not daring to move forward.
Xie Anbai stared directly at Xie Anjun, enunciating each word. "I am a member of the Xie Family! If you want to throw me out, you’d better ask yourself if you have the authority!"
But Xie Anjun just sneered.
"Father is gone. I will inherit the title, as is my right. Of course I have the authority to seek justice for him!"
Rage surged in Xie Anbai. "You—"
"If the Princely Heir wants justice, why not seek it from me?"
A clear, calm voice drifted in, instantly shattering the frozen atmosphere.
All eyes turned toward the main gate. There stood Chutang, draped in a snow-white fox fur cloak. She was standing quietly in the night wind, her gaze calm and steady as she looked their way.
Xie Anjun’s heart skipped a beat. ’Why is Chutang here now!?’
He betrayed none of his shock, however, merely frowning. "The Marquis Mansion is attending to a private matter today and is not receiving guests. Second Miss Ye, please come back another time."
Chutang looked up, her eyes falling on the white funeral cloth hanging over the gate.
"This is a major affair. Now that I am aware, how could I not come to pay my respects and see the Marquis off on his final journey? After all, I was involved in the Marquis’s final days. Moreover—"
Chutang paused, her gaze returning to Xie Anjun, her expression placid.
"A moment ago, from a distance, I overheard the Princely Heir voicing some complaints about me. He seems to believe I mismanaged the Marquis’s condition, leading to his sudden passing. If that’s the case, and the Princely Heir wishes to seek justice, then surely he should be seeking it from me."
Xie Anjun was mortified.
’He never imagined that Chutang had heard everything! And for her to say it so openly!’
’Even worse, she was so audacious as to tell him to seek justice from her!’
’Xie Anjun had only said those words offhandedly to pin the blame on Xie Anbai. He never actually intended to cause trouble for Chutang.’
’Who in the entire Capital City didn’t know that Chutang had single-handedly turned the tide and awakened His Majesty?’
’And now here he was, questioning her medical skills. He was well and truly caught in a bind!’
Trapped, Xie Anjun could only take a deep breath and say coldly, "I have no intention of making things difficult for Second Miss Ye. However, my father did suddenly fall ill and pass away shortly after your consultation. As his son, I am overcome with grief! Had he not taken your medicine, perhaps my father would not be gone! How am I supposed to accept this!?"
