After hours on the road, the motor car drew up to the vast stone manor at the heart of Borealia, where the Duke of the Northern Province, Rodney Cecil, stood waiting on the portico.
"It is an absolute pleasure to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Varos to Borealia," Rodney declared, stepping forward with open arms to greet them.
He pulled Damian into a firm embrace, patting his back before leaning in to murmur quietly near his ear, "It has been far too long, my friend. Though I must say, marriage has turned you more lively. You practically glow." As the two men pulled away, Damian introduced his wife to Rodney and his wife.
"This is Eilika, my wife and better half," Damian introduced, a proud smile gracing his features as he rested a steady hand against the small of her back.
"Lady Eilika, it is a pleasure to meet you. I am Meghan," the woman beside Rodney offered, stepping forward with a warm, welcoming smile.
Eilika greeted both Rodney and Meghan with refined grace before adding, "We have brought along several tokens from Varos to mark our visit."
At her signal, the footmen stepped forward, carrying in the trunks and wrapped parcels sent from the central province. Rodney and Meghan offered their genuine thanks as the attendants carried the offerings inside.
"Your quarters have been fully prepared," Meghan said. "Allow me to show you up. You must both be exhausted after such a long journey on the road."
"I will join Duke Rodney for a brief discussion," Damian replied.
"Indeed, let the ladies precede us," Rodney agreed, gesturing toward the lounge as he invited Damian and Maurice to take a seat.
Eilika offered Damian a subtle nod before turning to follow Meghan down the corridor toward the East Wing.
"I was among the guests at your wedding, Lady Eilika," Meghan remarked, an amused smile touching her lips. "Though I doubt you recall seeing me."
"I must admit I did not know your name at the time," Eilika answered candidly.
"That is entirely understandable," Meghan said smoothly, her eyes turning toward Eilika as they walked. "We have heard much of you in the North. When the Duke of Varos chose to take a second wife after so many years, having been so famously devoted to his late Duchess, it naturally drew great interest. It must have been quite difficult for you at the beginning."
"Yes, a little," Eilika admitted quietly.
"Tell me, is Damian good to you?" Meghan asked, her tone softening. "Please do not mind me dropping his formal title. I am older than both of you, and we reserve rigid formalities for public displays."
"I completely understand," Eilika replied.
They paused as a servant stepped forward to push open the heavy double doors ahead of them.
"You should rest for a while. We can continue our conversation later," Meghan said as they entered the suite, casting a brief glance at Lana, the chief maid assigned to serve Eilika during her month-long stay.
Eilika offered a polite, gentle nod, waiting until Meghan had departed and the doors clicked shut.
"May I bring you some tea and light refreshments, my lady?" Lana inquired deferentially.
"No, thank you. I would prefer to rest," Eilika replied softly, turning toward the inner bedchamber where she finally sank onto the edge of the mattress.
Stripping off her gloves, she set them aside on the side table before climbing into bed and resting her head against the stacked pillows.
She closed her eyes, seeking sleep, but snapped them open just a few minutes later as an important thought struck her.
Stepping back out into the sitting room, she found Lana waiting nearby. "I require a pen and paper," Eilika requested. "I need to draft a message to my son and my mother-in-law."
"I shall fetch them at once, Your Grace," Lana replied, hurrying out while Eilika took a seat on the velvet sofa.
When the maid returned with the writing set, Eilika offered a brief word of thanks. Dipping the quill into the inkwell, she began to write, pausing periodically to gather her thoughts between lines.
Once finished, she let the ink dry before folding it. She then walked inside, taking the written letter with her.

"How are things progressing in Varos, Damian? I heard about the Queen recently as well," Rodney said, his tone turning solemn. "It was quite shocking to learn that she..." He trailed off, falling silent as a pair of maids entered the room carrying silver trays. The servants set down fresh water and light refreshments before quietly stepping back.
"It was a shock to the entire kingdom," Damian replied, reaching for a glass.
As he took a slow sip, the faint sound of two young voices raised in argument drifted in from the corridor. Recognizing the chatter, a brief smile touched his lips.
"Athena, Alina, what are you two squabbling about?" Rodney called out as his daughters entered the room. "Come here and greet Duke Damian and his knight."
The two sisters hurried forward, offering proper curtsies to Damian and a polite greeting to Maurice.
"You two have grown quite a bit over the past year," Damian remarked warmly.
"Athena turned fourteen just last week, and Alina celebrated her twelfth birthday last month," Rodney noted, watching them with fond pride.
"Father, Sister Athena refused to take me to her dance class tomorrow. I want to watch her practice," Alina complained, turning to her father with a pout.
"Alina, I already told you that my friends will be there," Athena countered defensively.
"Enough, both of you," Rodney chided in a light, mild tone. "You are growing up now, must you bicker over every small thing? What will Duke Damian and his knight think of you if you carry on like this in front of guests?"
Athena and Alina promptly quieted down, lowering their eyes in deference.
"It is only natural for children their age, Duke Rodney," Damian remarked, a faint, indulgent smile touching his lips. "They are merely at a spirited age. Let them be."
Athena and Alina exchanged a swift glance before quietly slipping away the moment their mother spotted them from down the hallway. With an exasperated sigh, Meghan followed after her daughters.
"How is Roman doing?" Rodney asked, taking a sip of his drink. "I neglected to ask earlier. Last year, the boy was so terribly shy. He hardly spoke a word. But on your wedding day, I noticed a remarkable change in him. He seems truly happy now."
"He is," Damian replied softly, setting his silver glass down onto the table. "My wife adores him, and her love has healed him completely. He has found a mother in her, after all."
"You made the right choice in marrying again," Rodney remarked, his gaze lingering on his friend. "Tragedy touches every life, Damian, but you seem to have found your footing once more. Even your eyes... They look different now."
"Hmm." Damian offered a quiet nod in agreement.
"Reports reached us in the North from time to time about Lady Eilika," Rodney added, his gaze thoughtful. "When you were poisoned, my knight mentioned that it was your wife who secured the antidote. It is reassuring to see you cherishing her as she deserves."
"It took a long time to reach this point, to feel this kind of peace and certainty again," Damian admitted.
"I can well imagine," Rodney answered. "Your devotion to your first wife was known to everyone in the kingdom. Yet in many ways, that grief nearly consumed you. The love you have found now seems to have reshaped you into a much warmer man."
"I agree. I had changed in ways I never wanted to see in myself," Damian admitted softly, his voice carrying the weight of past years. "I grew distant, convincing myself I was beyond the reach of love. I was... deeply wounded."
"I know, Damian. Your mother even approached me last year, asking if I might find a suitable match for you," Rodney confessed, his tone growing solemn. "I chose not to speak of it to you then, but she was worried to death for you. Truthfully, I doubted anyone could draw you back out. You had young Roman to consider, and I feared bringing a new woman into your home might only invite a bitter fate for the boy or even you."
"My mother eventually found Eilika. Looking back, I can only call it fate," Damian said softly. "The God I once believed had abandoned me brought a extraordinary woman into my life, someone who teaches me every single day. Even the smallest moments hold meaning now, simply because she is beside me."
Rodney smiled upon hearing his thoughts. "Well, it seems it was always meant to be. But look, neither of you has touched a single bite of these refreshments."
"We ought to turn in and rest for a while," Damian said, rising from his chair.
"Of course," Rodney agreed, standing up alongside them. "A maid will escort Maurice to his quarters, but allow me to walk you up to your suite myself."
