Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Three?

The four stepped through the dungeon gate.

The moment they entered, they noticed how different it was from the dungeon they had previously explored.

It was quiet.

The corridors were wide and mostly empty, with little evidence that anything had lived there recently.

Tolu looked around.

"It looks like it was cleared not long ago."

Ore nodded.

"Probably why the guild hasn’t had many reports from here."

They continued deeper.

For several minutes, they saw nothing.

Then a small slime emerged from behind a rock.

Akin pointed at it.

"There’s one."

Temi drew her sword.

"That’s it?"

Another slime slowly crawled from beneath a patch of stone.

Then another.

Akin looked around.

"Maybe we should kill them anyway."

Ore glanced at him.

"Why?"

"In case we don’t find the Mirefang."

He pointed toward the slimes.

"At least their cores will make sure we don’t go back empty-handed."

Tolu nodded.

"Good point."

The four spread out.

The slimes barely had time to react.

Ore fired an arrow.

It struck the first slime and sent it collapsing against the ground.

Tolu stepped forward and finished another with his sword.

Akin’s blade flashed as a thin layer of ice formed along its edge.

One clean strike split a slime apart.

Temi rushed toward another.

"Mine!"

Her sword struck the creature before it could retreat.

The slime burst apart, leaving its small core behind.

More appeared as they moved deeper.

None of them were particularly difficult.

The four quickly fell into a rhythm.

Ore handled the ones at a distance.

Tolu and Akin dealt with anything that came too close.

Temi rushed ahead whenever she spotted another.

Soon, the scattered slimes were gone.

They collected the cores and placed them into a small pouch.

Akin tied it securely to his belt.

"At least we have something."

Tolu looked farther down the empty corridor.

The dungeon seemed to become even quieter the deeper they went.

No monsters.

No adventurers.

Nothing.

Ore adjusted her bow.

"Let’s keep moving."

The four continued deeper into the dungeon, unaware that they were walking toward something far more dangerous than the creatures they had just defeated.

As they proceeded deeper into the dungeon, the silence around them became heavier.

Ore suddenly stopped.

"Ah?"

Her foot had stepped onto something soft.

She slowly lifted her boot and looked down.

Half of a slime lay beneath her.

Its translucent body had been torn apart, but its core was still intact.

The four stared at it.

Tolu crouched down and examined the remains.

"It was eaten."

Akin looked farther down the corridor.

"By the Mirefang?"

Tolu nodded.

"We’re getting close."

If the Mirefang had eaten the slime recently, it couldn’t be far away.

The four became more alert.

Tolu drew his sword.

Akin followed.

Temi tightened her grip around hers.

Ore reached behind her and pulled an arrow from her quiver, nocking it against the bowstring.

They continued forward.

Their footsteps became quieter.

After several minutes, the corridor opened into a large cavern.

They stopped at the entrance.

Chunks of slime were scattered across the floor.

Some had been crushed.

Others had been torn apart.

A few remained stuck against the walls.

The entire cavern smelled faintly of blood and something else they couldn’t identify.

Temi swallowed.

"This is their lair."

Ore slowly lowered her bow.

"But where are—"

A low growl interrupted her.

Everyone froze.

The sound had come from behind them.

They turned.

A large creature stood in the corridor.

Its body was covered in dark fur.

Its claws dug into the stone floor as it lowered its head.

A Mirefang.

Temi’s grip tightened around her sword.

"Found it."

Tolu took a step forward.

"Get ready."

But before they could move—

Another growl echoed from inside the cavern.

Then another.

The four turned their heads.

Two more Mirefangs emerged from the darkness.

Tolu’s eyes widened.

"Three?"

They were much larger than the Mirefang they had fought before.

Their shoulders stood higher.

Their bodies were thicker.

Their claws were longer.

Even their jaws looked more powerful.

Akin took a slow step backward.

"Those aren’t normal."

The three Mirefangs lowered themselves.

Their eyes locked onto the four adventurers.

For one brief moment, everything was still.

Then the first Mirefang lunged.

The other two followed.

"Move!"

The cavern erupted into chaos.

The four quickly realized that the Mirefangs were not simply larger than the one they had fought before.

They were stronger.

Much stronger.

The first Mirefang lunged at Tolu.

He raised his sword just in time.

Claws slammed against the blade, forcing him backward several steps.

Tolu’s arms trembled from the impact.

"That’s not normal!"

Another Mirefang darted toward Akin.

He swung his sword.

The creature twisted away from the blade with frightening speed and immediately lunged again.

Akin barely blocked it.

The force drove him sideways.

"They’re too fast!"

Ore’s eyes moved between the three creatures.

"Back to back!"

The others understood immediately.

They moved until the four stood in a tight circle, each facing a different direction.

Now there was no blind side.

The Mirefangs stopped.

They began circling them.

Their eyes remained fixed on the four adventurers.

Temi tightened her grip.

"Come on..."

The first Mirefang suddenly rushed forward.

Temi stepped in to meet it.

Her sword collided with its claws.

The impact nearly knocked the weapon from her hands.

She recovered and slashed across its chest.

The Mirefang twisted away.

Too fast.

Temi gritted her teeth.

She attacked again.

The creature ducked beneath her swing and snapped its jaws at her.

She barely pulled herself away.

"Dammit!"

Another Mirefang attacked.

Akin intercepted it.

His sword struck its shoulder.

For a moment, ice spread across the creature’s fur.

Akin’s eyes widened.

"It worked!"

The Mirefang roared and violently shook itself.

The ice shattered.

Akin stumbled backward.

"It’s not enough!"

Ore drew her bow.

She had only been training for a few days.

Her hands were already shaking.

She couldn’t afford to take a careless shot.

One mistake could hit one of them.

She waited.

The Mirefangs continued moving.

Temi saw an opening.

She acted without thinking.

She rushed forward.

"TEMI!"

She ignored Ore’s warning.

The Mirefang’s head turned.

Temi swung.

The creature dodged.

Her sword missed.

She suddenly realized her mistake.

Her defense was open.

The Mirefang twisted its body and swung one of its claws toward her waist.

Temi’s eyes widened.

She moved just enough to avoid taking the full force of the attack.

The claws tore across her side.

Pain exploded through her body.

Temi cried out.

But she didn’t fall.

She gritted her teeth, turned her body, and drove her sword into the Mirefang’s side.

The blade sank deep.

The creature staggered.

Temi pushed harder.

Then pulled the sword free.

The Mirefang collapsed.

Temi stood over it, breathing heavily.

She looked down at the blood on her clothes.

"I..."
