....

The man stopped. "You really don’t understand what you’re doing."

Tolu’s eyes narrowed. "Then explain it."

"I don’t need to." The man looked toward the Ironfang.

"I need it alive." That caught Tolu’s attention.

Alive. Exactly what he needed.

The adventurer continued. "I have a contract for it."

Tolu said nothing.

"You two should leave."

Ore looked at Tolu.

The man continued. "I’ll deal with the beast."

Tolu shook his head. "We can’t."

"Why?"

Tolu couldn’t tell him. Because I need to touch it. Because I have a dungeon.

Because this creature could become one of the strongest things inside it.

Instead, he simply said: "We came here for it."

The adventurer stared at him. Then he smiled. "Then I suppose we have a problem.

The Ironfang growled.

The three humans immediately turned toward it. The beast was still recovering from the arrows. It shook its head. Blood ran down its side.

The adventurer drew his weapon.

Tolu noticed immediately.

His stance was different from theirs.

Calm.

Balanced.

Experienced.

There was no hesitation. The man didn’t look like someone preparing for a desperate fight. He looked like someone preparing to work.

Tolu swallowed. The difference was obvious.

The man moved first.

The Ironfang charged.

He stepped aside. The wolf’s claws passed through empty air.

The adventurer struck its side with the flat of his weapon.

The blow knocked the beast sideways.

Tolu stared.

That single attack had done more damage than several of their arrows.

The Ironfang recovered instantly. It turned.

The man moved again. This time, he attacked its legs.

The wolf stumbled.

Tolu understood.

He wasn’t trying to kill it.

He was trying to disable it.

"He’s actually going to capture it," Ore whispered.

Tolu nodded. "Yeah."

The Ironfang suddenly lunged at the adventurer.

He blocked. The impact forced him backward several steps. His boots dug trenches into the dirt. He grunted.

The beast was stronger than he expected.

Tolu saw his opportunity. "Ore!"

She understood.

They moved around the side. Tolu ran toward the wolf.

His ring began to feel warm. Just a little closer.

He only needed to touch it. The Ironfang turned toward him. Its eyes locked onto him.

Tolu stopped.

The wolf charged.

He jumped aside.

The beast slammed into a tree.

Tolu rushed forward. Almost. His fingers stretched toward its fur.

The adventurer suddenly stepped between them. "What are you doing?"

Tolu pulled his hand back. "Nothing."

The man’s eyes narrowed. "Stay out of my way."

Tolu stepped backward.

The adventurer returned his attention to the Ironfang.

"Ore."

She looked at him.

"We need to separate him from the wolf."

Ore understood immediately. They couldn’t beat the man. They couldn’t overpower the Ironfang.

But they could use the terrain.

Tolu ran toward the secondary trap.

The adventurer noticed. "What are you doing?"

Tolu ignored him.

He reached the rope.

The Ironfang charged after him. "Now!"

Ore fired.

The arrow struck the ground directly in front of the beast.

It hesitated.

Tolu pulled the rope.

The ground ahead collapsed. The Ironfang’s front legs dropped into the tangled-leg trap.

Ropes and branches wrapped around its legs.

The wolf roared. Tolu rushed toward it.

The adventurer grabbed his shoulder. "Don’t."

Tolu twisted. "Let go."

"You’re going to get yourself killed."

"I know what I’m doing."

"No, you don’t."

Tolu shoved his hand away. He ran.

The adventurer caught him again.

Tolu swung his sword.

The man blocked it easily.

The impact sent a shock through Tolu’s arm.

His fingers nearly went numb.

The adventurer looked at him. "You’re too weak."

Tolu’s face tightened. "I know."

He kicked dirt toward the man’s face.

The adventurer recoiled.

Tolu sprinted away.

Ore laughed despite herself.

"Did you just throw dirt at him?"

"It worked."

The adventurer wiped his face.

He looked genuinely offended. "You little..."

The Ironfang roared again.

The three of them turned.

The beast was pulling itself free.

Tolu’s smile disappeared. "Run."

The Ironfang tore through the tangled branches. It charged.

Ore fired repeatedly.

One arrow.

Two.

Three.

The beast kept coming.

Tolu ducked behind a tree.

The Ironfang slammed into it. The trunk shook. Leaves rained down.

Tolu stumbled away.

The adventurer attacked from the side.

His weapon struck the wolf’s ribs.

The beast turned and swiped.

The man blocked.

The force pushed him backward.

Tolu stared.

Even the adventurer was struggling.

The Ironfang wasn’t something a Level Two adventurer could simply dominate.

The man gritted his teeth. "Hold it!"

Tolu looked at him. "What?"

"Your trap!"

"It’s broken!"

"Then make another one!"

Tolu stared at him.

The adventurer shouted. "You’re the one who prepared this place!"

Tolu suddenly realized something.

The man didn’t know the terrain.

But Tolu did.

He pointed. "Ore!"

She followed his finger.

They moved together. Ore ran toward the ridge. Tolu grabbed the remaining rope.

They had prepared one final restraint. It wasn’t a trap meant for the Ironfang.

It had been designed as an emergency measure.

A thick rope had been tied between two trees at waist height.

Another rope ran beneath it. If pulled, the upper rope would drop suddenly.

Tolu waited.

The Ironfang charged toward the adventurer.

The adventurer dodged.

The wolf continued forward.

Straight toward the rope.

"NOW!" Tolu pulled.

The rope dropped. The Ironfang’s legs struck it. Its balance disappeared. The beast crashed onto its side.

Ore fired an arrow into the ground beside its head. The wolf snarled.

Tolu ran forward.

The ring on his finger glowed faintly.

Almost.

Tolu was only a few steps away. The Ironfang struggled.

Its claws tore into the dirt.

Tolu reached forward.

Then the adventurer moved.

He grabbed Tolu by the shoulder. "What are you doing?"

Tolu spun. "Let go!"

The man shoved him backward.

Tolu hit the ground.

"You’ve done enough."

Tolu pushed himself up. "You don’t understand."

"I understand perfectly."

The man looked toward the wolf.

"You’ve spent all this effort trying to capture something you can’t control."

Tolu wiped dirt from his face. "You’re not getting it."

The adventurer frowned. "What?"

Tolu looked at the Ironfang.

Then at him. "We’re not leaving."

The man’s expression hardened.

"Then you’re going to make me force you."
