Chapter 66: Chapter 66: Weapons

The next morning, the training began earlier than usual.

The sun had barely climbed above the walls of the manor when Tolu and the others gathered in the backyard, still carrying the lingering soreness from the previous day’s training.

The grass was damp with morning dew. The air was cool, and a faint mist hovered over the distant trees.

Folami was already there.

He sat lazily beneath the shade of a large tree, one leg crossed over the other, a cup of tea resting comfortably in his hand.

His butler stood a short distance behind him.

Tolu looked around.

"So, what are we doing today?"

Folami took a slow sip before answering.

"Today?"

He lowered the cup.

"We begin something important."

The four of them exchanged glances.

Folami stood.

"You’ve learned to make your spells flow instead of treating every spell as a separate action. That’s good. But magic isn’t the only thing that keeps an adventurer alive."

He looked at each of them.

"You need to become familiar with a weapon."

Tolu’s eyes immediately brightened.

"A weapon?"

Folami nodded.

"You’ll be fighting beasts, cultivators, criminals, and eventually people much stronger than yourselves. Depending entirely on your spells is foolish."

He gestured toward them.

"Pick something."

There was a brief silence.

Then Tolu walked toward the weapon rack.

His eyes moved across the selection.

Swords.

Spears.

Axes.

Maces.

Daggers.

Polearms.

His hand eventually settled around the handle of a sword.

He pulled it free and tested its weight.

Akin did the same.

He picked up a sword and examined the blade carefully.

Temi also walked over.

She barely hesitated before taking a sword.

Then she frowned.

She gave it a few experimental swings.

"This."

Ore, meanwhile, ignored the swords entirely.

She walked straight past them and picked up a bow.

She pulled the string once, testing its tension.

Folami watched them.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then a small smile appeared on his face.

"You four are so predictable."

Temi looked at him.

"What?"

Folami chuckled.

"Of course."

He pointed at them one after another.

"A sword."

He pointed at Akin.

"Another sword."

Then Temi.

" Same with you"

Finally, Ore.

"And an archer."

Ore raised an eyebrow.

"What’s wrong with a bow?"

"Nothing."

Folami’s smile widened.

"In fact, it’s exactly what I’d expect from someone with a wind affinity."

He turned toward his butler.

"Bring them."

The butler bowed.

"Yes, sir."

He disappeared into the manor.

A few minutes later, they heard wheels rolling across the stone path.

The butler returned with a large wooden wagon.

The wagon was completely filled with weapons.

There were swords of different lengths, axes, spears, hammers, maces, polearms, bows, staffs, strange curved weapons, and weapons that Tolu couldn’t even identify.

The four of them stared.

Tolu walked closer.

"How many weapons are here?"

"Enough," Folami replied.

He stepped toward the wagon.

"This isn’t about choosing whatever looks impressive."

His hand moved through the weapons.

"It’s about finding something that suits your body, your attributes, your temperament, and the way you fight."

He picked up a sword.

"Strength matters."

He put it down.

"Reach matters."

Another weapon.

"Speed matters."

He returned that one.

"Your affinity matters too."

He continued searching.

Tolu watched silently.

Folami eventually stopped.

His hand disappeared beneath several weapons.

Then he pulled something out.

A massive war hammer.

Tolu’s eyes widened.

The weapon was enormous.

The head alone was nearly as wide as his torso, with a thick metal striking surface and a reinforced central body. Its handle was long enough to require both hands, and the weapon looked like it had been designed for one purpose.

To crush.

Folami tossed it toward him.

Tolu barely caught it.

The moment the hammer landed in his hands, his arms dropped slightly from the weight.

"Whoa."

He adjusted his grip.

The weight felt strangely natural. He swung it a few times imagining the powerful strikes he could make with this piece of beauty.

Folami smiled.

"You’ve got the strength for it."

Tolu swung it experimentally.

The hammer cut through the air with a deep whoosh.

He stopped it before it struck the ground.

Folami nodded.

"War hammer."

Tolu looked at the weapon.

"I like it."

"I know."

Folami turned toward Akin.

He reached into the wagon again.

This time, he pulled out a massive great sword.

The blade was long and broad, far larger than the swords Akin had previously used.

Akin accepted it.

He tested the balance.

His expression remained calm.

"This is heavier."

"That’s the point."

Folami gestured toward him.

"Your body can handle it. Your ice affinity also benefits from a weapon that can control space instead of simply cutting through an opponent."

Akin made a slow horizontal swing.

The great sword moved heavily but steadily.

He nodded.

"I’ll use it."

Folami then looked toward Temi.

His eyes moved to the sword she was already holding.

He smiled.

"You at least got something right."

Temi smirked.

Folami reached into the wagon and pulled out two weapons.

They were short swords, but unlike the ordinary blade Temi had picked earlier, these were specifically designed for dual wielding.

The blades were slightly curved.

The handles were wrapped tightly for a secure grip.

The guards were small, allowing her wrists to move freely.

He handed them to her.

"These."

Temi replaced her old swords.

She immediately began testing them.

One slash.

A second.

A crossing strike.

A spin.

Her movements became faster.

Folami watched carefully.

"You rely on aggression and speed. And normal length swords cam get in your way; these on the other hand are just perfect."

Temi stopped.

"Is that bad?"

"No."

Folami shook his head.

"Not if you learn to control it."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Your problem isn’t that you attack too much. It’s that sometimes your attacks decide where you’re going before your mind does."

Temi looked at the swords in her hands.

She understood what he meant.

Folami then turned toward Ore.

She was still holding her bow.

He studied her for a moment.

Then his eyes moved toward the wagon.

Unlike the others, he didn’t immediately reach for another sword.

Instead, he searched through the bottom of the wagon.

After a moment, he pulled something out.

It was a strange staff.

Ore stared at it.

It looked nothing like an ordinary staff.

The central portion was cylindrical, thick enough to grip comfortably.

But at both ends were enormous metal heads.

Each head was shaped almost like a cylinder that had been sliced in half lengthwise.

The flat sides faced outward.

The rounded sides faced inward.

From a distance, it looked almost like two enormous semi-cylindrical blades surrounding a full cylinder in the center.

Ore frowned.

"What is this?"

Folami held it out to her.

"A three-way staff."

She took it cautiously.

The weapon was heavier than it looked.

She shifted her grip.

Folami continued.

"Your archery is good."

Ore looked at him.

"Because of my wind affinity?"

"Exactly."

He nodded.

"Wind makes you naturally suited for ranged combat. You can increase arrow speed, alter trajectories, and eventually create attacks that are difficult to predict."

He paused.

"But there’s a weakness."

Ore’s expression became serious.

"Close range."

Folami nodded.

"If someone reaches you, your bow becomes considerably less useful."

Ore looked down at the strange weapon.

"This fixes that?"

"It gives you another option."

Folami pointed toward the weapon.

"The three-way staff allows you to fight at close range while still taking advantage of your speed and wind affinity."

Ore slowly spun it.

The two strange heads whistled through the air.

She stopped.

Folami continued.

"Don’t think of it as a replacement for your bow."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"Think of it as the weapon you use when someone gets too close."

Ore nodded slowly.

She tested another spin.

This time she understood the balance better.

The weapon rotated smoothly around her body.

Folami stepped back.

"Good."

He looked at all four of them.

Tolu stood with the enormous war hammer resting against his shoulder.

Akin held the great sword in both hands.

Temi had her twin short swords drawn.

Ore held the strange three-way staff in one hand while her bow remained strapped across her back.

Four weapons.

Four fighting styles.

Four different paths.

Folami’s expression became more serious.

"Remember this moment."

The four looked at him.

"This isn’t simply you choosing weapons."

He walked slowly past them.

"This is the beginning of your weapons journey."

He stopped in front of Tolu.

"At first, you’ll simply learn how to swing."

He looked at Akin.

"Then you’ll learn how to defend."

His eyes moved to Temi.

"Then you’ll learn how to attack."

Finally, he looked at Ore.

"And eventually, you’ll stop thinking about the weapon altogether."

He turned back toward the group.

"The weapon will become an extension of your body."

The morning wind passed through the courtyard.

Tolu tightened his grip around the hammer.

Folami smiled.

"Now."

He stepped backward.

"Show me how badly you’ve chosen."
