Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Seriously? They Want to Summon That Thing?
That evening, I was sitting alone inside my dorm room, with an ancient record spread open across my desk.
The book was old enough that several of its pages had already begun to turn yellow, but the information written inside was still valuable. It contained records about ancient creatures, strange phenomena, and several incidents that had nearly brought entire cities to ruin.
I turned another page and rested my chin against my hand.
"Hmm..."
There were still so many things about this world that I didn’t understand.
If the ancient records were accurate, there had been countless monsters throughout history that were far more dangerous than the ones commonly known today. Some had disappeared completely, while others had been sealed away after entire kingdoms failed to defeat them.
I was about to continue reading when—
Knock.
My attention immediately shifted toward the window.
A moment later, the window opened quietly, and a young woman slipped inside without making much noise.
It was Zyra.
She landed lightly on the floor before closing the window behind her.
"Master."
"You’re here."
I closed the book.
Judging by her expression, this wasn’t a routine report.
"Yes. I have an important report regarding the investigation assigned to us."
"Go ahead."
Zyra stood straight, her expression calm and professional.
"We have located what appears to be one of the large laboratories connected to the organization we’ve been investigating."
My eyes narrowed slightly.
"A laboratory?"
"Yes. Our scouts observed several groups entering and leaving the facility over the past few days. We have not made any attempt to infiltrate it yet, as doing so without understanding the full structure of the facility could alert them."
She paused briefly before continuing.
"However, we managed to confirm something far more concerning."
"What did you find?"
"Human specimens."
Her voice became slightly more serious.
"There are numerous large capsules inside the facility. Some contain humans, while others appear to contain monsters or creatures that we haven’t been able to identify. We also detected several unusual magical fluctuations coming from deeper within the laboratory."
I leaned back in my chair.
"So they’re still experimenting."
"That is our current conclusion."
Zyra continued without hesitation.
"We estimate that there are close to two hundred individuals inside the facility, although the number is not yet confirmed. Most appear to be guards, researchers, and other personnel. We have also detected several heavily armed individuals who seem to be protecting the inner sections."
"Any idea how strong they are?"
"Not yet. Our people avoided direct contact, so we don’t have enough information to make an accurate assessment."
She placed several documents on my desk.
"Lady Aoda and Lady Valentine have already been assigned to oversee the investigation. Ten elites have also been placed under their command. Their current orders are to observe the facility, identify the entrances and exits, determine the number and strength of the guards, and gather as much information as possible before we make our move."
I glanced down at the documents.
That was the right decision.
If there really were nearly two hundred people inside, charging in without knowing what was waiting for us would be unnecessarily reckless.
"And the people inside those capsules?"
"We haven’t determined their condition yet. Some appear to be alive, but we cannot confirm whether they are being kept there for experimentation, preservation, or something else."
Zyra’s expression remained composed, but her eyes became slightly colder.
"Whatever they’re doing inside that laboratory, it appears to be on a much larger scale than the previous facilities we’ve discovered."
I was silent for a moment.
This was definitely worth investigating personally.
I closed the ancient record and stood from my chair.
"Very well."
Zyra looked at me.
"I’ll go and see it myself."
"Understood."
I picked up my coat and glanced once more at the documents.
"If Aoda and Valentine are already handling the investigation, tell them to continue gathering information until I arrive. No unnecessary fighting, and absolutely no attempt to destroy the facility."
"Yes, Master."
Zyra was already preparing to leave when she suddenly stopped.
"There is one more report, Master."
I looked up from the documents.
"Another one?"
"Yes. This matter has been classified as high priority."
Her tone was different this time.
She reached beneath her coat and carefully brought out a dark, aged document. It wasn’t an ordinary sheet of paper. Several layers had been bound together, with faint magical markings running along the edges.
She placed it on the desk.
"Where did you find this?"
"Among the records recovered from one of the locations we investigated. Only a fragment was recovered, but the information written on it is enough to confirm its importance."
I opened it.
The first few lines immediately caught my attention.
Grave Tyrant.
I stopped reading for a moment.
"...Grave Tyrant?"
"Yes."
Zyra remained standing.
"We believe this is a record concerning the summoning of that monster."
I continued reading.
The document contained fragments of a summoning formation, required materials, magical conditions, and several references to an ancient ritual.
There was also a date.
Era: Age of Ruin — around 2,400 years ago
My eyes narrowed.
Two thousand four hundred years ago?
Is this even real?
The Grave Tyrant was a disaster-class monster from an ancient era. Even the surviving records described its appearance as something that had resulted in entire regions becoming wastelands.
And these people were actually planning to summon it?
Are they out of their minds?
I turned another page.
Most of the information was incomplete, but the purpose was unmistakable.
This wasn’t a historical record.
It was a preparation record.
Someone was trying to recreate the summoning.
"How many people know about this?"
"Very few. The record has been classified as restricted information. Only the highest-ranking members involved in the investigation have been informed."
"Good."
I closed the document halfway.
"If this information spreads before we understand the situation, it could cause unnecessary panic."
"That was our concern as well."
I looked back at Zyra.
"What about the other records? Have you found anything else?"
"Yes, but only fragments."
She paused before continuing.
"Our people have discovered several references that appear to be connected to the same ritual. Unfortunately, none of them contain enough information to identify the exact location."
"So you believe the ritual is already being prepared somewhere."
"That is our current conclusion."
Zyra placed another smaller bundle of papers beside the first document.
"We’re still investigating. The fragments mention several locations, but we’re not certain whether they are related to the ritual itself or merely locations where the required materials are being gathered."
"And the laboratory we discovered?"
"We haven’t confirmed a connection yet."
I leaned back in my chair and looked at the documents again.
A massive laboratory.
Human and monster specimens.
And now a plan involving the disaster class monster.
There were too many things happening at once.
"Continue the investigation quietly."
"Yes."
"If you discover the location of the ritual, don’t interfere immediately. Report to me first."
Zyra nodded.
"Understood, Master."
She hesitated for a moment.
"Should we increase surveillance around the suspected locations?"
"Yes. But keep it subtle. I don’t want them realizing that we’re aware of their plans."
"Understood."
She bowed.
As Zyra turned toward the window, I looked down at the old record one more time.
The Grave Tyrant...
If even half of what was written here was true, allowing that thing to be summoned would be a disaster.
And someone was apparently crazy enough to try.
I sighed and closed the document.
"This world really doesn’t know how to stay quiet."
