Chapter 46: My New Dragon Subordinate Is Strong, Proud, and Surprisingly ShortChapter 46: Chapter 46: My New Dragon Subordinate Is Strong, Proud, and Surprisingly Short
"From this day onward, I shall be known as Draven."
"Good to have you."
Draven raised his head again, his expression somehow becoming even more solemn despite the fact that he had just spent the last several minutes desperately negotiating for his life.
"Master."
I paused.
There was something strangely satisfying about hearing an ancient dragon call me that.
Not that I would ever admit it.
"Now that you’re my subordinate, there’s something we should probably discuss."
Draven’s eyes narrowed slightly.
"Something we should discuss?"
"Yes. Your treasure."
He looked toward the enormous treasury behind us.
"What about it?"
"There’s too much of it."
I spread my arms, taking another look at the mountains of gold, weapons, magical equipment, gemstones, artifacts, and countless other treasures filling the enormous chamber.
"I can’t exactly carry all of this back to the capital. Even if I could, I’d probably need an entire army of wagons, and explaining where I got all of it would be troublesome."
Draven seemed to relax.
"Ah, that."
He nodded as though the problem were already solved.
"Don’t worry about it, Master."
"Hmm?"
Draven raised one hand and casually flicked his fingers.
The air around us rippled.
One pile of gold coins disappeared.
Then another.
Then an entire rack of weapons vanished as though it had never existed.
The process continued across the treasury.
Gold disappeared.
Gemstones vanished.
Ancient armor, magical weapons, rare materials, ornaments, statues, and countless other treasures were swallowed into nothing one after another.
Within a few moments, the enormous treasury that had been overflowing with wealth was completely empty.
I stared at the bare stone floor.
"...What happened?"
Draven looked at me innocently.
"Ah, don’t worry about it, Master. I simply stored everything inside my magic space."
"Your magic space?"
"Yes."
He gestured casually toward the empty room.
"I created a storage space within my own magic. Everything is still there, and nothing will be damaged. I can retrieve whatever you need whenever you want."
Then I looked at the empty treasury.
"Woah that’s amazing"
Draven hesitated.
"..ahahahaha, I’m glad you like it."
Still, another problem immediately came to mind.
Even if the treasure could be stored, there was something considerably more difficult to deal with.
I looked at Draven’s enormous body.
There was absolutely no way I could bring a dragon of this size into the city without causing a massive commotion.
How am I supposed to bring this guy back with me?
Draven suddenly smiled.
"Hehe."
I looked at him.
"Hmm?"
"Nothing, Master."
His smile widened.
"You were wondering how you were going to bring me back, weren’t you?"
"Yeah."
"Then there’s no need to worry."
Before I could ask what he meant, his enormous body began to change.
The white scales covering his body started shrinking inward.
His wings folded against his back and gradually disappeared.
His massive claws became hands.
His long tail shortened until it vanished completely, while his body continued shrinking until the enormous dragon standing before me was replaced by a human figure.
I stared.
The dragon was gone.
In his place stood a young-looking man with pale skin and short white hair that fell naturally around his face. Several strands were slightly longer than the others, giving his hairstyle a somewhat unusual appearance.
His eyes were the strangest part.
One was a deep crimson, while the other was a pale silver that almost seemed to reflect the light around it.
He wore a small, neatly fitted black suit with a white shirt underneath, along with a dark vest and simple boots. The clothing looked strangely formal for someone who had spent thousands of years sleeping inside a cave.
He looked at me.
I looked at him.
He looked back at me.
"...Who are you?"
The young man blinked.
"Master?"
I frowned.
"What?"
"Master, what are you talking about?"
He placed a hand against his chest.
"It’s me."
I stared at him for another few seconds.
"You’re Draven?"
"Yes."
"The dragon?"
"Yes."
"The enormous white dragon with black scales?"
"That would be me."
I looked him up and down.
"...You look nothing like I expected."
Draven smiled awkwardly.
"This is my human form."
"I can see that but..."
I walked around him once, examining him from different angles.
"Why are you so short?"
His expression immediately changed.
"Excuse me?"
"I thought you’d become a tall, handsome man."
Draven stared at me in disbelief.
"That is an incredibly rude thing to say to someone who just agreed to become your subordinate."
"I wasn’t insulting you."
"You absolutely were."
I shrugged.
"You still look fine."
"That’s not the point."
Draven sighed and rubbed his forehead.
"I am an ancient dragon, Master. My human form is not designed to satisfy your expectations regarding height."
"That’s unfortunate."
"Why are you disappointed?"
"I don’t know. I just expected something more impressive."
Draven looked at me for several seconds.
Then he sighed again.
"I already regret becoming your subordinate."
"Then i can butcher you now."
He immediately stiffened.
"...I-i didn’t say that."
"Kidding hahahahaha."
"S-scary."
Draven looked around the chamber.
"Now that the treasure has been stored, we should probably deal with this place as well."
"What about it?"
"If someone discovers this cave, they may start wondering why an enormous underground treasury existed beneath the mountain."
He walked toward the center of the chamber and raised one hand.
"I created this place, after all. I can make it disappear."
"Really?"
"Of course."
Draven’s expression became slightly proud.
"I may look like this now, but I am still an ancient dragon."
"You’re going to mention that every time you use your powers, aren’t you?"
"...Not at all ahahahah."
He turned toward the center of the room.
A faint white light gathered around his hand.
The stone beneath our feet began to tremble.
The walls slowly started collapsing inward, but instead of falling apart normally, the stone itself seemed to dissolve into particles of light.
The ancient carvings vanished.
The magic circles disappeared.
The walls began closing together as though the mountain itself were returning to its original state.
Within moments, the entire underground chamber had disappeared.
"Done."
I looked around.
"That’s actually impressive."
Draven smiled proudly.
I glanced at him again.
"I didn’t say it earlier, but you’re surprisingly powerful."
Draven’s smile became wider.
"Coming from someone like you, that is quite a compliment."
"Don’t get carried away."
"I am an ancient and proud dragon, after all. It would be strange if I wasn’t—"
"I get it so you could stop now."
Draven stopped.
"...You’re really strange, Master."
We left the cave together and returned to the surface.
The mountain was peaceful.
The wind moved through the trees, and the sounds of birds could be heard somewhere in the distance. Looking back at the mountain, there was nothing that suggested an enormous underground treasury had existed beneath it only moments ago.
Draven stood beside me in his human form, looking toward the mountain with a strange expression.
"Still, Master..."
"Hmm?"
"You really are an unusual human."
"Hmm yeah."
"No, I mean it seriously."
Draven looked at me.
"I have lived for thousands of years. I’ve seen kingdoms rise, civilizations disappear, powerful warriors come and go, and countless humans who believed themselves invincible."
He paused.
"But I’ve never met anyone who looked at an ancient dragon’s treasury and immediately started calculating how much gold they could carry away."
"What’s wrong with that?"
"Most people would be terrified of me."
"That’s their problem."
"Most people would also hesitate before touching my treasure."
"Anyway, there is something I should make clear."
"What is it, Master?"
"If you ever decide to betray me... you know what will happen right?"
Draven’s face had gone noticeably pale.
"...O-of course, i remembered it."
I smiled.
"Good, good."
"Then remember this."
I placed a hand on his shoulder.
"You’ve agreed to follow me, so don’t cause unnecessary trouble. As long as you stay loyal, I’ll treat you properly."
Draven nodded immediately.
"Of course, Master. You have my word."
"Good."
I smiled.
"Then let’s head back."
