Chapter 82: Chapter 82: The Giant Spier
The orc commander refused to fall.
Even after taking several direct attacks, it continued to swing its massive weapon with enough force to make the stone floor crack beneath their feet. The wounds covering its body were already beginning to close, forcing the group to keep attacking before its regeneration could completely recover it.
"Don’t let it recover!" Lyra shouted.
Charlie moved first, drawing the commander’s attention with a powerful strike. The orc blocked it, but Abel immediately attacked from the opposite side, forcing it to turn again.
Lea and Ron followed, their swords flashing as they struck its legs and arms, gradually limiting its movements.
The commander roared and swung its weapon in a wide arc.
"Move!"
Everyone scattered.
The weapon passed through the space where they had been standing before crashing into the wall.
Ares raised his hand.
"Now!"
A surge of light energy strengthened Abel’s body.
Abel understood immediately.
He stepped forward and drove his sword into the commander’s exposed side.
The orc staggered.
Charlie rushed in from the front.
"Don’t give it a chance!"
His sword struck across its chest, followed by another attack from Lea that opened the wound even further.
The commander tried to recover.
But Lyra was already there.
She stepped into the opening and gathered magic around her blade.
"Everyone, one more time."
The others immediately understood.
Charlie attacked first, forcing the commander to raise its weapon.
Abel struck its arm.
Lea cut into its leg.
Ron followed with a powerful strike across its side.
The commander lost its balance.
Lyra stepped forward.
Her sword was already glowing with concentrated magic.
"Finish it."
She swung.
The attack struck the commander directly through the chest.
For several seconds, the monster remained standing.
Then its enormous body finally collapsed onto the stone floor.
The chamber fell silent.
Everyone stood there breathing heavily, their weapons still raised as they made sure it wasn’t going to get back up.
After a few seconds, Charlie lowered his sword.
"Finally."
Abel let out a tired breath.
"That one was definitely stronger than everything we’ve fought so far."
Ares looked at the fallen commander.
It really wasn’t that hard.
Even with everyone working together, it took that much effort to bring it down.
The monster core was considerably larger than the others as well.
Charlie walked over and removed it before looking back at Ares.
"To think one of my classmates turned out to be a support type."
Ares glanced at him.
"Hm?"
"No wonder you aren’t particularly good at swordsmanship. With support magic like that, though, you’re on another level."
Ares gave an awkward laugh.
"Ahaha... is that so?"
"Of course."
Charlie looked around at the others.
"Because of your support, those fights became much easier. Even for magical swordsmen like us, dealing with that many orcs at once would have taken considerably more time, especially with the commander regenerating. With your reinforcement and healing, we were able to keep fighting without suffering serious injuries."
Lea nodded.
"He’s right. I didn’t expect someone from the D’Averon family to have an ability like that."
Ares smiled.
"I’m glad I could help."
Lyra looked toward the pouch containing their collected cores.
"How many do we have now?"
Abel counted them carefully.
"Twenty-six."
Lyra nodded.
"Twenty-six already."
She looked toward the passage ahead.
"We’re still in good condition, so there’s no reason to stop here."
Abel agreed.
"We should continue while everyone still has enough strength."
"Yes," Lyra said. "But from this point onward, don’t assume the monsters will be the same as the ones we’ve already fought."
She glanced toward the darkness ahead.
"The commander was only on this floor. If there are stronger monsters deeper down, we need to be prepared for them."
The group gathered their equipment and began moving again.
As they walked, they discussed their next route, deciding which passages were worth investigating and which ones would likely waste too much time.
For now, their pace remained steady.
And with twenty-six monster cores already secured, their team had begun to establish a respectable lead.
At least, that was what they hoped.
None of them knew how the other five teams were progressing.
The deeper they went, the quieter the dungeon became.
There were fewer monsters than before, but the silence only made the occasional sound from somewhere beyond the walls more unsettling. The group continued forward until they reached another enormous chamber, where thick strands of webbing stretched from the ceiling to the surrounding walls.
Lyra stopped immediately.
"Wait."
Everyone halted.
Something moved above them.
A large shape slowly descended from the darkness.
Eight legs touched the ground one after another, followed by a massive body covered in dark, hardened shell.
A giant spider.
It was considerably larger than the orcs they had just fought, its abdomen swollen with venom as several long fangs emerged from its mouth.
Kyra’s expression became serious.
"Everyone, be careful. That’s a giant spider. Even a single hit from those fangs and could be dangerous. Its venom spreads quickly once it enters the body."
Ron tightened his grip.
"So we can’t let it get close."
"Exactly."
Another student raised his sword.
"Then we need to finish this quickly."
The spider suddenly moved.
It didn’t charge directly toward them.
Instead, it climbed onto the wall and opened its mouth.
A stream of corrosive liquid shot across the chamber.
"Move!"
Everyone scattered.
The liquid struck the ground where they had been standing, immediately eating through the stone with a violent hiss.
"That’s acid?!"
Another stream came from above.
Charlie rolled beneath it while Abel raised his sword and deflected a smaller amount that had come toward him.
The spider continued moving along the walls, changing positions faster than expected.
Lyra watched it carefully.
"Don’t chase it. Wait for it to come down."
The spider suddenly launched itself from the wall.
"Now!"
The group attacked.
Several blades struck its body, but the hard shell absorbed most of the impact.
The spider immediately retaliated.
Its legs slammed into the ground with tremendous force, forcing everyone backward.
Lea tried to approach from the side, but the spider turned and fired another stream of venom.
She barely avoided it.
"Lyra!"
"I see it!"
Lyra rushed forward and struck one of its legs.
The spider screeched and swung another leg toward her.
She blocked the attack, but the impact forced her several steps backward.
"This thing is tougher than I expected."
Ares watched the battle carefully.
It’s fast, heavily protected, and its attacks cover too much ground.
The orc commander was powerful, but at least it had to fight us directly.
This thing doesn’t even need to get close.
The spider suddenly lunged toward Abel.
He raised his sword, but one of its fangs slipped past his guard and pierced his arm.
"Ah—!"
Abel immediately pulled himself away.
Blood began running down his arm.
His expression changed almost instantly.
"It’s already spreading..."
Ares moved toward him.
"Don’t move."
He placed his hand over the wound.
Eclipse energy flowed into the injured arm, spreading through the veins and forcing the venom out.
Abel’s expression gradually relaxed.
The dark discoloration around the wound faded.
"It’s gone."
Ares withdrew his hand.
"Keep your distance from its fangs."
Abel stared at his arm for a moment before nodding.
"Right."
There was no time to say anything else.
The spider attacked again.
Lyra immediately took command.
"Keep it facing the center. Don’t let it reach the back."
Charlie and Ron moved from opposite sides while Lea and Kyra attacked its legs whenever it lowered itself toward the ground.
The spider fought back fiercely.
Its legs struck the stone hard enough to crack it, venom continued spraying from its mouth, and whenever they managed to wound it, the damage slowly began closing.
Ares watched the monster regenerate.
This guy is pretty tough.
At this rate, we’re going to waste too much time.
I wanted to kill it myself, but there’s no helping it.
If I use too much of my actual power here, they’ll start wondering what I really am.
Ares looked toward the others.
They were already beginning to slow down.
Not because they were weak, but because the spider gave them almost no opportunity to attack safely.
Then an idea came to him.
He raised his hand.
"Everyone, get back!"
The others immediately looked toward him.
Ares gathered a large amount of Eclipse energy.
"I’ll use a high-level spell!"
The spider turned toward him.
Perfect.
"Take the opportunity when I strike!"
Lyra understood immediately.
"Everyone, prepare."
Ares concentrated his magic.
A dense mass of light energy gathered in front of him, bright enough to illuminate the entire chamber.
The spider reacted to the sudden increase in magical pressure and moved toward him.
Ares gritted his teeth.
"Come on..."
He released the spell.
A massive burst of energy struck the spider, forcing it backward.
The chamber shook.
Dust and fragments of stone fell from above.
For a moment, nobody could see anything through the smoke.
Then Ares dropped to one knee.
His breathing became heavy.
"Damn... I used too much."
Charlie looked toward him.
"Ares!"
"I’m fine."
He forced himself to stand.
"Don’t worry about me. Finish it."
Lyra didn’t hesitate.
"Now!"
Everyone moved.
The spider was badly wounded, several of its legs damaged and its shell cracked from Ares’s attack, but it was still alive.
It tried to retreat toward the wall.
Ron cut off its escape.
Lea attacked from the opposite side.
Charlie and Abel struck together, their swords flashing as they opened another section of its armor.
The spider lashed out desperately.
Lyra avoided the attack and stepped directly into the opening.
Her sword gathered magic.
"End it."
She swung.
The blade pierced through the damaged section of its body.
The spider convulsed once before collapsing onto the stone floor.
Silence returned to the chamber.
Everyone stood still for a moment, making sure it was truly dead.
Then Charlie lowered his sword.
"That was way more troublesome than the orc commander."
Lea nodded while catching her breath.
"Especially that venom."
Ares remained on one knee, pretending to recover from exhaustion while secretly observing the fallen monster.
That was close.
A little more and I would’ve had to actually interfere.
He slowly stood.
"Are we done?"
Lyra looked at the dead spider before nodding.
"Yes."
She glanced at the others.
"Check yourselves for injuries, collect the core, and then we’ll continue."
Nobody argued.
The fight had taken more time than expected, but they had survived without losing anyone.
And judging by the size of the spider’s core, the difficult battle had at least been worth something.
