Chapter 1183: Chapter 1183: Dad’s Small Request
(Thanks to Wang Zhong for the encouragement with the monthly ticket)
Liu Banxia said he wasn’t really that concerned about the Outstanding Youth Award, but that was just talk. When he brought the trophy back home, he couldn’t stop smiling.
"Look at you being all smug, hurry up and wash your hands, everyone is waiting for you to eat," Qiaoqiao shouted, seizing the trophy from his hand in the process.
"This is probably our family’s highest honor, we have to place it somewhere noticeable," said Qiao Xuezhi happily.
"Isn’t that a bit exaggerated? But this trophy does look quite nice, hahaha..."
Speaking of which, Liu Banxia also laughed.
"Brother Liu, this is extraordinary, I need to touch it too, to get some of that fairy dust," Qiu Mingyuan chimed in.
"Brother Liu, this is a cake Mingyuan and I bought for you. It’s not very big, just a gesture," Xiao Yue added.
This award is undoubtedly a big event for both the Liu and Qiao families. Everyone knew about the award ceremony today, so they all gathered to celebrate.
It wasn’t just them, Bao Chunlai and Dalei’s families joined as well, leaving no one behind.
These are close relationships; such good occasions must not be missed.
"You were all waiting for me, let’s all eat now," Liu Banxia said.
"Wah..."
As soon as he said that, his baby daughter started crying loudly. Her wailing was rather powerful.
"It’s alright, she’s just bored being by herself with nobody around," Rou said with a cheerful smile, peeking over.
Everyone has figured out this little one’s antics by now. Crying is just part of her routine.
Once someone pays attention, she takes a break. No attention? She still takes a break, then resumes crying later.
Who knows how such a young one, just full-month old, already has these little schemes? At first, it really wore Qiaoqiao out, but it’s a routine now.
She’s actually easy to appease; even bringing over Tang Dou’s head for her to watch works.
Earlier, everyone in the Tang Dou family went to welcome Liu Banxia, and everybody else was busy admiring the trophy, neglecting her, which was not okay.
"Brother Liu, I heard today’s surgery was quite risky?" Qiu Mingyuan asked.
"Yes, initially I wanted to use suction to hold all the cysts and then remove them. However, the cyst walls were too thin and could easily rupture with suction," Liu Banxia said.
"In the end, I adapted Director Xiao’s method, and it was barely successful. Anyway, as Qiaoqiao advised, try not to eat raw meat in the future."
"Especially beef, lamb, and river fish; they really might have parasites. Since our emergency center was established, we’ve already treated 8 parasite patients."
"Has nothing to do with me, I never eat sashimi. But dishes like spicy fish should be alright, right?" Qiu Mingyuan asked.
"Once cooked, it’s pretty much okay. You just need to pay a bit more attention when handling the ingredients," Liu Banxia replied with a smile.
"There’s no need to be that uptight; these things are visible. Just being a bit more cautious in daily life, choosing slightly better eateries is fine."
"Don’t say that; that BBQ place was quite fancy, but it truly wasn’t great," Qiu Mingyuan chimed in with a wry comment.
"And who was it who used to really enjoy eating there? Luckily, they got gout. Tsk tsk..." Xiao Yue teased.
This made everyone laugh heartily; this young couple was indeed amusing.
"By the way, Banxia, there’s something I need to tell you in advance. Remember Old Tong’s family living in the west of our town, who used to run a hardware store and later did plumbing?" Liu Qingdong asked.
"Dad, I remember. Their second son was two grades ahead of me," Liu Banxia replied.
"It’s him, he’s been diagnosed with rectal cancer. And since they know you’re now at the provincial hospital, they wanted to ask if they could save some money by having the surgery there," Liu Qingdong said.
"Not really much savings, since these are small-scale procedures," Liu Banxia explained.
"The care I can provide is just to prioritize them for surgery. Then, in terms of the hospital room, I can help with arrangements, as for the beds for caregivers, it is what it is."
"Regarding medication, we mostly use those covered by insurance. For surgery, we’ll try to minimize the use of consumables, although I don’t use much anyway."
"I remember their family used to be well-off, and plumbing is pretty profitable these days, especially with underfloor heating being popular. How come they are short on money now?"
"Ah, Old Tong was diagnosed with stomach cancer a few years ago. They had surgery in our city and removed a third of the stomach," Liu Qingdong recounted.
"At that time, their business was doing well, but they spent a lot on nutritional medicine. Then after they stabilized, the second son got into a car accident, drunken driving, and that wiped them out financially."
"They originally considered having the surgery locally, but the local doctors said they couldn’t save the anus. Then they thought of you, and called me."
"Their family is all straightforward men; it’s hard for them to ask for help. People in our town are quite humane; see if you can think of a way to help?"
Liu Banxia nodded, "I’ll think about it. The main issue is that the equipment I use for surgery is special. Otherwise, I would prefer not making money, let the county send an application, and I’ll do it at home."
"Surgery costs in Binhai City are already high, saving one or two thousand yuan won’t significantly help them. I’ll take a look later to see if I can bring the equipment over."
"But it will need to be disinfected again, which can be troublesome. Plus, we can’t just perform surgery wherever; the county hospital has to file an application first."
"Okay, with what you’ve said, I can give them an explanation." Liu Qingdong said.
"It seems that medical expenses are still a very troubling issue." Bao Chunlai said.
"There’s no way around it. Even with insurance reimbursement, the portion borne by individuals is still quite high." Liu Banxia remarked.
"If the family’s financial condition is average, they can barely manage. If the family condition is slightly worse, it’s quite burdensome."
"There is a significant difference between the fee standards in the county and Binhai City. However, even if we perform it in the county, the cost is still substantial. It’s a joint settlement between the county hospital and our Second Hospital’s Emergency Center, and not something I can decide."
"But we can save a bit; that’s the extent I can help. It saves them the trouble of traveling back and forth. They won’t need to worry about accommodation here, as the department I manage is about to be operational and has many vacant wards."
He spoke frankly since they were family.
Can some money be saved? Sure, money can be saved. But in terms of amount, it’s not much.
Because the hospital’s billing system is there; it’s not a matter of him just saying there’s a discount and it happens.
For friends or acquaintances like this, they can only be given some care in terms of nursing. In major aspects, that’s really it.
"Banxia, do you think his surgery is easy to perform?" Liu Qingdong asked.
"Have him photograph the films with his phone and send them to me, I’ll take a look." Liu Banxia replied with a smile.
"I need to look at the tumor situation, its location, and also his physique. The surgery method I use now has high requirements for physique."
Liu Qingdong nodded, "I’ll call him later and have him photograph whatever he can. He said it’s not advanced-stage; if it were, he wouldn’t treat it."
"You’ll see, you’ll probably end up running your son around." Peng Xiuqin grumbled.
"Mom, it’s fine. The high-speed train is fast to get back; it’s just not easy to transport the equipment. If it really doesn’t work, I’ll drive back instead." Liu Banxia said with a smile.
Regardless of the feasibility, he has to go back.
Why?
Because this is something that will make Dad proud, how can it be delayed?
Even if he ends up tiring himself out, going and returning on the same day, it’s okay. Dad getting to feel proud once isn’t easy; as the son, I can’t care too much.
Liu Qingdong was left amused; he was truly satisfied. A good son, a son who listens, that’s happiness.
"What do you say, could we bring the two little ones back to the hometown for a visit?" Qiaoqiao also got excited.
"Want to take a stroll too? Why not. Just make sure you manage on the car ride since you have to look after both of them." Liu Banxia said with a chuckle.
"Look at you, preparing for it, even our daughter-in-law is interested, it’s quite the effort." Peng Xiuqin said.
"Actually, it can work. I’ll go home early to tidy up, warm up the room, so the little ones don’t get cold." Liu Qingdong said.
"Old brother, does your hometown have any special food or drink?" Bao Chunlai asked with a laugh.
"Not much really; the town has hardly any people now. The county is still okay, but can’t compare to here. There’s a place that stews lamb vertebrae pretty well and has lots of people every day." Liu Qingdong said.
"Haha, if we have time, why don’t we just all go for a visit. Is it far?" Dalei asked.
"That’s good, that’s good; I haven’t been to Brother Liu’s place yet." Qiu Mingyuan said with interest.
"Goodness, I am going back, working hard on surgery, and you’re going sightseeing." Liu Banxia said with helpless humor.
"Look at that." Qiu Mingyuan said with some pride.
"But I wonder if our big Yueyue can make it. Grandad, hurry and ask the person from your town. Try to have it done by New Year’s Day, so there’s the holiday break."
"Okay, I’ll ask after dinner; there are still a few days. He’d probably be eager for it." Liu Qingdong said enthusiastically.
"Alright then, you handle the arrangements, for our Emergency Center, I’ll handle the coordination." Liu Banxia agreed.
In fact, it seems okay; it can be considered a trip.
With everyone bustling about, it seemed rather nice.
