Chapter 1306: Chapter 1306: Making Rounds Is an Art
We need to set aside our feelings for now; this is their family affair and doesn’t really concern us.
After composing himself, Liu Banxia entered the hypothyroidism patient’s ward.
"Looks like he had a good sleep. Did he wake up at any point?"
Liu Banxia asked with a smile.
"No, he slept straight through from yesterday afternoon until now. We were really worried, afraid it might be like the neighboring ward where the patient didn’t wake up," the patient’s father asked anxiously.
"Don’t worry, he’s just very sleep-deprived. Did he have any of those previous breathing difficulties yesterday?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Not at all. We’ve been watching this device, the blood oxygen or something, and it’s been stable," the patient’s father responded.
"Then there’s no problem. Let him sleep until he wakes naturally. Try not to make any noise; this sleep is very precious for him," Liu Banxia nodded.
"At least for a year, he hasn’t been able to sleep well. Let him have a good sleep. His condition isn’t too serious. Once he’s well-rested and medicated, he’ll slowly recover."
"Director Liu, how long will it take? Can he recover in three days?" asked the patient’s mother.
"Three days is quite optimistic. Hypothyroidism needs time to adjust," Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"Once the thyroid hormones return to normal, his internal organs will gradually recover, and his snoring will diminish significantly. Basically, we won’t need other treatments."
"But remember, once he’s discharged, his mood needs care. Emotions are crucial; if he’s unhappy, it will affect his endocrine system."
"His current situation was triggered by his poor mood; otherwise, it wouldn’t be this severe. Let him stay for a week and see, there should be a noticeable improvement by then."
"Don’t worry about other things; give him enough time, and he’ll recover. As I’ve mentioned, as long as his medication is managed well, he can live normally without any issues."
"I’ve dealt with many hypothyroidism patients, both children and adults. As long as they have regular check-ups and controlled medication, it’s fine."
Hearing this, everyone in the room visibly relaxed.
Even though it’s just one person, he holds everyone’s attention.
There’s not much to watch with this patient now; he’s happily sleeping, so there’s nothing to observe.
After leaving this ward, Liu Banxia entered the amputee guy’s room.
Compared to the other two bustling wards, this one was a bit quieter.
"Director Liu, you’ve come."
Seeing Liu Banxia enter, the old couple greeted him warmly.
"I’ve heard his symptoms have been improving recently, so I didn’t come. Who likes seeing the doctor?" Liu Banxia joked cheerfully.
"He’s indeed recovering well. How many more days does he need the infusion?" the patient’s father asked.
"We’ve started reducing the dosage. Tomorrow we’ll do a blood test, check the white blood cell count. If there’s no issue, we can stop the antibiotics," Liu Banxia said.
"Due to the major injury he sustained, some protective medications are still necessary for a few days. But basically, he’s out of danger now."
After speaking, Liu Banxia sat on a chair beside the patient’s bed. "How are you feeling?"
"Well, surviving is a blessing. Just muddling through life. Director Liu, thank you for saving my life," the patient said.
"You’re the one to thank. Without your extensive emergency knowledge, even a miracle couldn’t have saved you," Liu Banxia replied.
The patient offered a bittersweet smile, "Still ended up losing my leg."
Upon hearing this, the old couple also showed their distress.
Liu Banxia and Wu Mingyu had told them that accepting limb loss is a process for patients.
They had done quite a bit of work, but it hasn’t been very effective.
"Let me tell you, your comment isn’t quite right," Liu Banxia said.
"Deep down, you understand well, it’s quite simple really. Between saving your leg or your life, any sensible person would know the right choice."
"You lost your limb; does that mean your life is ruined? Isn’t that wishful thinking? Expecting to be cared for all your life? What would the Paralympians say?"
"Are you thinking if you had loosened your binds a bit, you could have saved both your leg and life? As a doctor, I wouldn’t dare imagine such a thing. If you had loosened them just a little, you’d have bled to death."
"Really?" The patient furrowed his brow.
"I’m the one cooking here. Are you the doctor or am I the doctor?" Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"Also, your blood vessel injuries are so severe. Even if you tie it loosely, it won’t just increase your blood loss; it won’t help the blood circulation in your foot at all."
"I’m not saying this just to comfort you. You’ve just gone through such a major event that your mind is a bit muddled, and you can’t recall the exact situation at the time."
"You’re usually a very calm person. You surely made a rational decision after careful consideration at that time. This was your own decision, so why overthink it now?"
"Prosthetic technology is so advanced nowadays, just face it bravely. Complaining won’t help. What’s going to happen to your parents in the days to come? Accompanying you with sighs every day?"
"Yesterday we admitted a patient who got his lower leg crushed by a car while being rescued from an accident. Despite Director Xu’s efforts to save the leg, it will still have a big impact on his future life."
"People who dare to play outdoors are usually those with tough spirits. Anyway, in my opinion, your current situation is really nothing."
"Other patients I can coax and comfort, but there’s no need with you. We haven’t chatted much before, but I think someone as strong as you wouldn’t be troubled by such a minor issue. What a joke."
"No more joking, if you feel any discomfort, call our orthopedic doctors. You’re under the care of orthopedics now; I’m actually just extra here."
"Not extra, not extra."
The patient’s father hurriedly said.
Though the son didn’t say much today, he patiently listened to Liu Banxia speak. For the elderly couple, this is progress.
"You see that, right? Your bit of change means so much to them," Liu Banxia said.
"You’ve pretty much recovered now. If you want to chat with me, just use your crutch to find me. Either come to our second department or find me at the first-floor reception."
"When you’re bored during rehabilitation in the future, you can volunteer at our hospital. Even if you can’t help with samples, you can at least guard the post and help guide the way."
After saying this, Liu Banxia waved, leading the small group out.
"Wow, I finally understand. Every time Teacher Liu rounds, seems like he’s just chatting casually with the patients, but he’s actually tailoring his approach to the individual."
Xu Yino said with a sigh after stepping out.
"Even a master’s degree can’t use better words? What do you mean by rambling and chatting?" Liu Banxia glanced at him.
"It’s true. We used to think you were just rambling during rounds. Not asking about the condition, just chatting aimlessly, talking randomly." Xu Yino said.
"Now it seems such chats aren’t simple at all; it’s mainly to ease the patients’ minds. Why didn’t I think of it before? Ah... living too hastily."
"Pay attention in the future. As I’ve told you many times, a good mood is beneficial for a patient’s prognosis," Liu Banxia said.
"Even if you can’t quantify this benefit with metrics, there’s still a big difference between a happy patient and a troubled one."
"Think of it this way: you are all bedside doctors, familiar with the patient’s condition. When I round again, unless there’s an emergency, my main role is to reassure the patients."
"That’s the meaning of my rounds. There’s really nothing else. Talking about mentoring interns or training doctors, there aren’t that many knowledge points to discuss."
"It’s all routine stuff. The proportion of emergency situations isn’t high, and we all have contingency plans."
"When you have your own patients, pay more attention to this aspect, especially with hospitalized patients. Although it might tire you, it does help the patients recover."
"In this aspect, Liu Yiqing is the best, undisputed. The worst is Xu Yino. That girl is always in a hurry, wanting everything to be done immediately so she can rush downstairs to attend to incoming patients."
Xu Yino grimaced.
Liu Banxia hit the mark; she wouldn’t be reflecting today otherwise.
But today, Liu Banxia focused on three VIP wards, treating patients with three different attitudes.
For the second patient who was sleeping, there wasn’t much directed at him, mainly directing talk to his family. And just now, the talk was for the patient.
Though the words seemed sharp, they should be effective for the patient.
You could sense it from the patient’s expression; they seemed to find it gratifying. The patient’s situation was somewhat special, similar to how Teacher Liu had to use strong medicine.
Rounding is also a skill; it looks like more attention is needed in the future.
Can’t just look at the patient’s condition and call it a day; other things need considering. This is a proper round, not too hasty.
Everyone’s spirits were high. Although this round took longer, both the ’Six Little Ones’ and the interns found it very rewarding.
