The Exiled Alpha's Human Male Mate.[BL]
Chapter 41: Your So-Called Boyfriend.Bryce straightened as his body gradually settled back into its normal state.
The sensation left him disoriented, as though he had been somewhere entirely beyond reality before being abruptly thrust back into it.
However, the shock of discovering that Vincent knew about his supposed boyfriend did not disappear with that strange sensation.
"Have you been stalking me? How do you know about that?" he demanded.
"Stalking you?" Vincent scoffed. "What do you take me for? Or rather... who do you think you are? And do you have any idea what you’re risking?"
Vincent said, his voice carrying a seriousness it had lacked from the beginning.
"Imagine you’re sitting at a table with them, and suddenly your eyes start glowing. What do you think happens then?
You don’t know anything about yourself, not even something as fundamental as controlling your true nature.
What do you think will happen when the full moon comes and you’re sitting there with them, only to shift into a full wolf right in front of their eyes? Do you honestly think they’ll simply laugh it off and forget about it?"
Full wolf...
He was going to shift into a complete animal?
Bryce panicked. The mere thought terrified him. Somehow, hearing it for the second time made it feel more real than it had before, as though the possibility had only now begun to sink in.
He did not want to become an animal. But how was he supposed to stop it?
Vincent’s expression remained stern.
"People like that will investigate you until they understand what you are and where you came from. But you have no connection to the wolf world, since we’ve never allowed any information about our existence to reach the human world, there will be nothing for them to trace back to.
They won’t understand what you are or where you came from, and when they realize they can’t find the answers they’re looking for, they’ll either kill you or sell you to researchers for experimentation, or whatever else they decide to do with you."
He looked directly at Bryce.
"And do you honestly believe your so-called boyfriend will stand by your side and protect you when it comes to this? Do you think he’ll choose you?
Believe me when I tell you, he’ll look at you and see nothing but a monster creature, something dangerous and incomprehensible to him.
When humans encounter something that isn’t entirely human, their first response is panic. All they see is a creature, a monster, because they’ve convinced themselves that anything beyond their understanding belongs to fantasy.
But the truth is, supernatural beings exist, every kind of them, far beyond the boundaries of our wolf world."
Bryce had no answer.
"Werewolves and humans are not compatible. Don’t make the mistake of believing this is nothing more than a story. And even if you decide you’ve found love with a human... what then? He’ll age. He’ll grow old. He’ll die. And you’ll remain young far longer than you can imagine. Once you reach twenty, you no longer age the way humans do. The process slows until you can live to a hundred years old and still look like a thirty year old."
Vincent paused.
Despite everything Bryce had heard, everything that threatened to overwhelm him and reduce him to tears, he couldn’t stop wondering about one thing.
How old was Vincent, really?
If what he had said about their slowed aging was true, then Vincent’s appearance offered no reliable answer.
To Bryce, he looked twenty-seven, perhaps twenty-eight. It was difficult to tell with any certainty.
"Now you know. Do whatever you want with the information," he added, making it clear that he had said everything he intended to say, or more accurately, everything he intended as a warning.
Bryce remained where he stood, still struggling to fully comprehend everything he had just been told.
When Vincent finally applied the patch, Bryce had thought his problems had, at last, been reduced to something manageable.
He could join Mr. Wilson and begin working on the project while he figured out what he was supposed to do about his feelings for Vincent, if he even had feelings for him at all.
Bryce was nowhere near certain about that.
The bond had interfered with his thoughts so profoundly that he could no longer distinguish between what he genuinely wanted and what he was forced to want.
Vincent had said that his feelings for him were the reason he still carried the mark, the reason he remained so deeply affected by him.
If that was true, then Bryce needed to do whatever it took to put an end to those feelings and finally free himself from them.
...but now, Bryce no longer knew what to think.
His problems remained unresolved. In fact, what had happened left him with the unsettling realization that this was only the beginning of something considerably more complicated.
"Leave my office," Vincent said, his voice even.
Bryce did not respond.
He simply turned around and walked toward the door, his legs weak beneath him, but he forced them forward until they carried him out.
Bryce stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the tenth floor, intending to return to the janitorial department’s room Heather had shown him, the place they went to rest whenever the workload subsided. But when the doors opened, he found all his colleagues waiting outside.
"Where to?"
He asked Heather, who was standing at the front of the group.
Instead of answering, Heather studied him with concern. "You’re visibly starting to look like you did yesterday, when you gave me a heart attack. Are you sure you’re okay?"
The others began filing into the elevator.
"I bet he’ll get fired this time if he causes that kind of drama again," one of the young men remarked as he stepped inside.
"Bro, are you going to make this a habit or what?" another added.
"Why doesn’t he just go home and nurse himself if he’s sick?"
Bryce ignored the remarks and stepped back into the elevator with Heather, still having no idea where they were headed.
"Why don’t you shut the fuck up, Oliver?" Heather snapped at one of the men who had been speaking.
"No dating your colleagues in this company, remember? Besides, he only arrived yesterday. At least give yourself some time to get to know him," Oliver shot back with an amused grin, drawing laughter from the others crowded inside the elevator.
"Asshole," Bryce muttered. Then, louder, he added, "Why don’t you act your age?"
That drew another round of laughter from the elevator, but this time, Oliver’s amusement vanished.
He shoved his way toward Bryce and immediately seized him by the collar.
"Careful, newbie. I’ll punch you so hard you’ll be unable to attend this fucking boring meeting we’re all being dragged into because of you."
’Because of me?’
Bryce stared at him, bewildered.
He knocked Oliver’s hand away from his collar, but Oliver shoved him again. Before anyone could intervene, the elevator chimed.
The doors opened, and Oliver seized Bryce again, dragging him out as though he wanted them somewhere with enough room to settle the matter.
At that exact moment, Vincent stepped out of the private elevator.
His eyes immediately fell upon the scene.
Oliver’s fist was still twisted in Bryce’s collar.
The entire group froze when they saw him.
Vincent’s fingers slowly curled into a fist, his expression hardening as his eyes fixed on Oliver with an intense look.
