That was Elarion’s current daily System-point yield. A stark, unyielding metric that quantified the sum total of their factories, farms, garrisons, and population into a single numeric.
It was a figure Lucas understood instantly from an administrative standpoint and also the one he deeply loathed.
"So the System or whatever it is my lord,it can provide virtually anything," Lucas said, his tone dry as bone, "and yet almost every item worth having is priced like a royal treasury."
Lucien didn’t look up from his desk. "Finished goods carry an exorbitant markup."
"And blueprints?"
"Substantially cheaper."
"Foundational knowledge?"
"Cheaper still."
Lucas leaned back into the leather cushioning of his chair, crossing his arms. "Then buying completed equipment is a fool’s errand unless our survival depends on immediate delivery."
Malen, sitting upright in the adjacent chair with his military coat unbuttoned at the collar, gave a single, quiet nod. "Agreed. One shiny machine breaks, and we are back to square one. Blueprints and theory stay with us."
Lucien glanced between his two most senior advisors. "That is precisely the conclusion I reached."
The brilliant translucent interface hovered unobtrusively in Lucien’s field of vision, its gold-and-blue script visible to him alone. Neither Lucas nor Malen could see the floating ledger. Over the past months, both men had long since stopped asking how Lucien possessed his impossible insights; they had learned to measure his private source of power purely by its functional output.
"The Exchange opens access to military hardware, manufacturing tech, and high-tier knowledge from civilizations that have reached heights we can barely conceive," Lucien said, his eyes scanning invisible columns of text. Lucas tapped a long finger rhythmically against his notebook. "Then the core question isn’t what we want."
"No," Lucien said smoothly. "The question is what is currently stopping us."
Lucien stood, resting his palms against the dark grain of his desk. "One way to know that ,lets call the people running Elarion’s core programs and ask that exact question."
Malen shifted, his eyes sharpening. "The council?"
"The council," Lucien confirmed. "Call them."
The emergency administrative session convened less than an hour later in the council chamber.
Lucien sat at the head of the dark mahogany table. Malen occupied the seat directly to his right,Beside him, Lucas sat with a fresh stack of ledger paper and a freshly dipped quill.
Across the table sat Ironbreaker and Brakka, representing the Elarion mechanical foundation(Titanworks+Ironhold).
Beside the dwarves sat Master Dray, Elarion’s principal draftsman, looking slightly exhausted, his fingers stained with graphite from overseeing the expanding shipyard blueprints for the dreadnought class ship Bismarck.
Gandalf and Maerath held the opposing side. As the senior mages governing Skyforge, they oversaw the delicate, volatile integration of mana matrices into Elarion’s mechanical infrastructure.
At the far end sat Cedric playing with a coin.
Lucien leaned forward, bringing the room to an immediate silence. "You all know the System underwent a fundamental re-alignment over the past week."
Silent nods rippled down the table. Nobody questioned the premise. They had seen many blueprints appear under Lucien’s direction too many times to waste breath on skepticism.
"You also know that I have the means to pull specific assets and information from that architecture," Lucien continued, his voice steady. "I have not called you here to ask for a wish list."
Ironbreaker folded his thick, hair-flecked arms across his chest. "Then what are we here for, my Lord?"
"I want to know what you cannot currently build," Lucien said directly. "Not something that would be convenient or something that would shave a few weeks off a construction schedule. I want to know about the absolute technological walls your departments are hitting."
He let the words settle over the heavy silence of the chamber.
"If there is a fundamental barrier stopping Elarion’s industrial, military, or magical ascension, I want to identify it and see if we can buy the ladder to cross that wall."
Lucas adjusted his glasses, dipping his quill into the inkwell. "One department at a time. Malen, start with the military."
Malen straightened, placing his calloused hands flat on the table. "Our special forces have a strategic mobility bottleneck."
Lucien raised an eyebrow. "Elaborate."
"Elarion’s elite rapid-response units namely the commandos are composed primarily of trained Knights," Malen explained, pulling a regional map across the wood. "Individual physical capability is exceptional. They can outrun ordinary infantry and fight for days without fatigue. But they cannot outrun terrain."
He tapped several major points on the map.
Iron Junction. Skyforge. Seastar.
"Elarion sits at the core of our territory," Malen said, gesturing to the hub-and-spoke geography of their expansion. "Our major industrial nodes and border settlements extend outward across massive distances. If an iron mine in the north is hit, or a border post at Seastar is breached, our best strike teams are still forced to travel along ground roads or rail lines or through those expensive one time use transportation scrolls."
"You need aerial deployment," Lucien said.
"Rapid aerial deployment," Malen corrected precisely. "As we asked before for one we need a specialized transport aircraft capable of carrying a fully equipped squad of special forces. Something fast enough to bypass ground terrain, land in unprepared clearings, drop the unit, and exit before regional forces can mobilize against it."
Lucas made a quick, scratching note on his ledger. "If I remember correctly you were working on choppers right what happened?"
Gandalf shook his white-bearded head. "Not with our current engine power-to-weight ratios or airframe stabilization matrices. We can build basic recon gliders and heavy atmospheric barges, but nothing with that speed and tactical agility."
Malen looked at Lucien. "We have basic aircraft but not that kind of aircraft you need."
Lucien considered the request. Within the Exchange’s FINISHED GOODS and MILITARY EQUIPMENT tabs, several entries fit the description: tactical transport planes, heavy tiltrotors, and specialized mana-kinetic insertion craft. The finished units were steep, but not impossible.
"Would a single completed aircraft serve your strategic needs?" Lucien asked.
"As a operational unit, yes," Malen said. Then he pointed toward Ironbreaker. "But more importantly, as a physical study model. Give our machine shops a working prototype, and they can reverse-engineer internal systems that drawings alone cannot fully explain."
Ironbreaker grunted in agreement. "A real machine lets us measure stress points and fluid dynamics in real-time. He’s right."
"Then rapid tactical transport goes on the evaluation list," Lucien decided. He turned his focus to the dwarven smiths. "Ironbreaker, what is Mechanical Works hitting?"
"Precision," the dwarf answered instantly, without a second’s hesitation.
Brakka nodded beside him, his jaw tight. "Tolerance limits. We are reaching the ceiling of what our manual lathes and standard gearing systems can produce."
Ironbreaker reached into his heavy leather coat, pulled out a small, gleaming steel shaft fitted with a internal bearing race, and set it down with a sharp clack on the polished table.
"We can manufacture increasingly complex machinery," Ironbreaker said, tapping the metal. "But the higher the precision required, the higher our failure rate spikes. When we try to cut high-spec components, seven out of ten end up in the scrap bin."
Lucien picked up the steel part, feeling the microscopic roughness along its inner race. "Which components specifically?"
"High-speed bearings," Brakka answered. "Precision gearboxes. Steam-turbine blades. Small mechanical clockwork assemblies for artillery fuses. We can make one good part if our best master machinist spends three days filing and polishing it by hand. But that isn’t how you build an industrial empire."
Ironbreaker leaned over the table, his deep voice rumbling. "One mastercraft part means nothing. We need ten thousand identical parts that fit together perfectly off the assembly line without a dwarf sitting there with a hand-file."
Lucien set the bearing down. "Mass production through standardized interchangeability."
"Exactly," Brakka said. he looked slightly frustrated. "Which brings us to the helicopter project."
Lucien’s eyes sharpened. "The rotary-wing prototype?"
"We are hitting a wall," Brakka admitted reluctantly.
Ironbreaker gave him a sharp glance. "We solved the main rotor dynamics!"
"We also solved the lift problem," Brakka countered instantly, "We haven’t solved the tail-rotor torque compensation, the main transmission heat friction, or the cyclic pitch linkage vibration that nearly shook the test rig to pieces last Tuesday!"
He looked back at Lucien. "If we keep guessing our way through trial and error, we’re going to blow up three more engine blocks and kill a test pilot."
"What do you need to break that wall?" Lucien asked calmly.
"A reference rotorcraft," Brakka said plainly. "A completed, functional machine. We don’t even need to copy its exact engine—we just need to study how its transmission handles torque conversion, how its swashplate controls blade pitch, and how its frame dampens high-frequency vibration."
Ironbreaker nodded slowly. "He’s right. Let us dissect a working transmission, and we can adjust our foundry methods to match."
Lucien noted the request. A standard, non-combat commercial or utility helicopter in the Exchange was moderately priced compared to high-end military jets.
"A reference rotorcraft goes on the secondary list," Lucien instructed Lucas. "Precision machine tools and standardized tolerance equipment take primary priority."
"Agreed," Ironbreaker grunted. "Fix our machine tools, and we’ll build the rest ourselves."
Lucien turned to Master Dray. "What is stalling construction?"
Dray unrolled a series of massive architectural parchments across the center of the table, weighting the corners down with inkwells. "Bismarck itself, my Lord."
The room grew noticeably quieter. The dreadnought project was the absolute apex of Elarion’s industrial ambition—a steel monster designed to dominate regional waters.
"The hull scale is unprecedented," Dray said, running a graphite-stained finger along the structural ribs drawn on the paper. "At this length, errors compound exponentially. Lucien leaned over the drawings. "Our current surveying tools aren’t sufficient?"
"They are magnificent for five-story brick warehouses and standard cargo frigates," Dray explained weary-eyed. "They are wholly inadequate for a multi-thousand-ton all-steel warship. We desperately need high-precision optical surveying instruments, long-range alignment levels, micro-measurement tools, and advanced structural stress formulas."
He sighed, resting his palms on the table. "Right now, my team is calculating steel plate load-bearing thresholds using empirical guesswork. It’s terrifying. One wrong calculation on the structural bulkheads, and the ship’s own weight could snap her spine when she leaves the drydock."
"Add precision optical surveying instruments and advanced structural engineering knowledge," Lucien commanded Lucas.
Dray exhaled a long, audible breath of relief. "That single knowledge package will save us two years of structural redesigns."
Lucien’s gaze shifted to the senior mages. "Gandalf. Maerath."
Gandalf adjusted his dark grey robes, folding his hands over the table. "Theory, my Lord. Pure theory."
Lucien tilted his head. "Not magical hardware?"

"Which means," Maerath added, "every time we push our mana reactors to higher output thresholds, we risk a catastrophic matrix collapse because we don’t understand the underlying field dynamics."
"We need foundational magical science," Gandalf said, his old eyes gleaming with intense intellectual hunger. "Mana-flow calculus. High-density field stabilization formulas. Atmospheric conversion equations. The mathematical theory of mana dynamics."
Lucien smiled faintly. "The System catalogs deep magical theory from worlds where magic was studied as a rigorous, physical science rather than esoteric art."

"Specify," Lucien said.

"But Elarion’s intelligence network is expanding far beyond our borders. My agents operating in foreign territory require long-range, low-power communication sets that cannot be easily intercepted or directionally-found."
He looked toward Lucas. "I need advanced cryptographic technology. Machine-based encryption systems that make our hand-written codebooks obsolete."
"And surveillance?" Lucien asked.
"Directional listening gear," Cedric listed calmly. "High-magnification optical equipment. Night-vision optics if the System possesses them. Miniature recording devices. Compact, concealable equipment for field operatives who cannot risk carrying bulk machinery."
Cedric paused, his dark eyes meeting Lucien’s. "And counterintelligence tools."
The room’s ambient chatter died instantly.
"Explain," Lucien said softly.
"Elarion is no longer an obscure frontier territory," Cedric said, his voice dropping an octave. "Our sudden industrial boom, our rail networks, and our production output are drawing the attention of much more dangerous enemies."
Cedric’s hands folded together smoothly. "I want the means to detect, track, and neutralize foreign operatives before they even realize they’ve stepped into our web."
"Add the cryptographic packages, specialized optics, and counterintelligence methodologies," Lucien instructed Lucas.
For the next twenty minutes, Lucien privately navigated the expanded System Exchange, cross-referencing every single item requested by his council against their point costs.
The numbers were steep, but by focusing on foundational knowledge packages, blueprints, and minimal high-impact study models—rather than massive fleets of finished machines—the overall point cost was drastically reduced.
Lucien looked back at assembled council.
"We have our parameters," Lucien announced, his voice carrying absolute authority. "We do not spend points to buy luxury or temporary fixes. Anything that permanently elevates Elarion’s baseline industrial, scientific, or military capability will be acquired. Finished goods will only be purchased if they serve as vital study models for our own engineers."
Ironbreaker slapped a heavy palm against his knee. "Now that’s an industrial policy I can stand behind."
"Lucas will prioritize the requisitions based on our point reserves," Lucien continued. "Dismissed."
Chairs scraped back against the wooden floorboards as the room began to clear.
Ironbreaker and Brakka immediately fell into a heated technical argument over main transmission gear ratios as they gathered their papers. Gandalf and Maerath walked out side-by-side, whispering intensely about mana-calculus matrices. Dray carefully rolled his fragile ship blueprints, tucking them beneath his arm, while Malen gathered his military folders.
Only Cedric remained sitting at the far end of the long table not moving an inch.
Lucien noticed instantly. Malen, catching the shift in Lucien’s gaze, stopped near the heavy oak doors, signaling the guards outside to close the entrance. Lucas paused his writing, hovering his quill above his pad.
"Cedric,anything the matter?" Lucien asked quietly.
The intelligence chief looked up, his expression completely blank, yet his eyes carried an unmistakable weight.
"There is one additional matter, my Lord."
Malen slowly turned back into the room, his hand instinctively dropping to rest near the hilt of his sidearm. Lucas quietly closed his ledger.
Lucien leaned back into his chair, locking eyes with his spymaster. "Go on."
"Eight individuals entered Iron Junction late yesterday afternoon," Cedric said cleanly.
The room was silent.
"Eight?" Lucien repeated, his voice flat.
"Yes," Cedric continued. "They arrived as part of Belhorn’s long-distance merchant caravan. On the surface, their entry was completely ordinary. They registered at the regional labor station separately and took different employment assignments—two went to the rail yard, three to the iron foundries, two to the warehouse district, and one to the municipal waterworks."
Lucas frowned slightly. "A caravan brings hundreds of laborers every week. Why do eight dispersed workers warrant a direct report to the Lord of the territory?"
Cedric turned his gaze toward Lucas. "Because they executed their entry with perfect operational discipline."
Cedric paused, letting the detail sink in.
"The only reason my operatives flagged them," Cedric added softly, "is because they don’t know they are being watched by an integrated territorial monitoring system. Ordinary laborers get drunk, argue about pay, or look lost. These eight moved with the cold, calculated efficiency of trained military infiltrators."
Lucien’s eyes narrowed into dark, dangerous slits. "Who do they belong to?"
"We are still analyzing their signatures," Cedric replied. "But that is only half of the report."
The temperature in the council room seemed to drop several degrees.
"What is the other half?" Lucien demanded.
Cedric leaned forward, resting his hands flat on the mahogany table.
"Caelrith," Cedric said slowly, "has spent the last three weeks moving heavy intelligence assets across the eastern provinces."
Lucien’s posture locked.
"And what," Lucien asked, "is Caelrith searching for?"
Cedric met Lucien’s stare with unflinching calm.
"Eight people."
Silence fell over the council chamber, heavy and suffocating.
Eight infiltrators quietly stepping into Elarion’s primary industrial hub. Eight specific targets being hunted across the continent by one of the most dangerous entities in the region.
The System, the point economy, and the technological blueprints were instantly pushed to the back of Lucien’s mind. A far more immediate, volatile variable had just walked through his front door.
Lucien’s hand rested on the armrest of his chair, his fingers tightening against the polished wood until the grain groaned under the pressure.
"Find out who they are," Lucien ordered, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. "Find out what they are carrying and do not let them know we exist until we hold the leash."
Cedric gave a slow, deliberate nod. "It will be done, my Lord."
