Crossing the park, Jenny unconsciously slowed her pace. This was her favorite place in the entire town.
Flowers bloomed everywhere, and every time she passed through, she felt her mood improve.
"Look over there, the newly completed luxury residential district!"
Jenny spread her arms wide as if she were a magician revealing the grand finale of an incredible trick. Her voice was deliberately exaggerated.
"The finest houses in all of Nightfall Domain! Private villas!"
Phield called them little brick houses, but to ordinary residents, these homes were magnificent palaces radiating golden light.
"You could not have said it better, miss."
A resident standing nearby and admiring the houses was practically drooling.
"I used to think a mud house was the greatest dream I could have, until I saw these."
"Damn, if I could own one of those, I would willingly go ten years without touching a woman."
"Look at those private courtyards and the paved roads beside them. I bet we could never afford one."
The residents were completely mesmerized.
Xinly could not hide the longing in her eyes either, but she shook her head.
"I do not have any money."
"That is why you need to save. Look at me. I go to the commercial district just to window shop."
Jenny planted her hands on her hips.
"Want to save money together? We could buy one together when we have enough."
Although demi-humans were often described as beings seduced by demons, Jenny still thought the girl in front of her was a nice person. Sheep demi-humans were much cuter than wolf demi-humans, and at least she did not have to worry about being eaten by them.
"Okay."
Xinly scratched her head. She did not really know how money was supposed to be spent. Back in her tribe, she had only ever traded goods for other goods.
"Woooooo!"
A deep horn sounded from the northwest of the city, followed immediately by countless panicked cries.
"That sound... it is an alarm!"
Jenny’s face changed dramatically. She had not heard an alarm in a long time.
"Quick, get back inside! The Corpse Fiends must be attacking again!"
Phield was helping equip the Corpse Fiend Legion when he heard the horn. He froze for a moment before his expression changed.
"What is happening? Did the Corpse Fiends launch their attack ahead of schedule?"
"Ophelia, you take charge of equipping the Corpse Fiend Legion. Ashina and I are going to reinforce the border immediately!"
"Yes!"
Phield leapt onto his Drakewolf and raced toward the border between Dawnfall Territory and Nightfall Domain at full speed.
The area had once been nothing but ruins.
After the Bull Territory campaign ended, Phield had immediately sent people to rebuild the border. Although only a few months had passed, wooden walls had already been erected, sealing every gap.
One hundred soldiers from the First Army were stationed there.
The defenders relied on the wooden walls as they fought the attacking Corpse Fiends. Crossbow bolts, stones, and whatever other debris they could find were hurled down in a frenzy.
Every so often, a Corpse Fiend beneath the wall would have its skull smashed open and collapse to the ground.
"Enemy attack! Enemy attack! Follow the drills! Get to your assigned positions!"
The soldiers on the battlements repeatedly struck the alarm bells and blew their horns, urging the troops to take up defensive positions while also ordering the serfs throughout the territory to retreat into the temporary wooden fortifications.
"Swish, swish, swish!"
Countless bone arrows flew wildly over the walls.
The fleeing serfs were immediately caught in the attack.
"Ah!"
An elderly peasant woman who was too slow was struck in the back of the head by a bone arrow. The sharpened arrow pierced straight through her skull and emerged from her mouth, blood and broken teeth spilling out together.
"Grandma!"
The old woman’s little grandson clung tightly to her corpse and wailed.
The surrounding serfs did not even spare the child a glance. They surged away from the battlefield, desperate to escape the chaos.
"Corpse Fiends have climbed over the wall! Everyone, be careful! There seems to be a Divine Chosen among them!"
More than a hundred Claw Corpse Fiends used their scythe like hooked claws to haul themselves over the battlements before leaping into the territory.
A stunningly beautiful woman stood among the massive horde of corpses. She casually surveyed the scene inside the territory with amusement.
"Heh heh. I never imagined that after ignoring Nightfall Domain for only a few months, you would have expanded all the way to the border."
"Destroy everything!"
"Agnes’s weakness and incompetence will only encourage humans to become more arrogant. It is time to teach them a lesson."
During the previous treasure hunting expedition by the Stormsea Mercantile Nation’s fleet, the peaceful Corpse Fiends had been disturbed.
Frenita had tasted the fresh flesh of the sailors.
After that, she could no longer suppress the bloodlust raging inside her and had decisively come to Nightfall Domain in search of prey.
"Hold them back! Warriors, reinforcements from the lord will arrive soon!"
Newte, the captain of the soldiers stationed there, led thirty men away from the wall and formed a battle line on the ground.
"Fight to the death! No retreat!"
"Fight to the death! No retreat!"
Every soldier had survived countless battles. They knew perfectly well that against a Divine Chosen, they would probably be killed with a single slash.
Yet there was not a trace of fear in their eyes.
"Then I will start with you, my darlings. This is a feeding session. Just obediently accept your deaths, my little meals."
Frenita gracefully approached with the steps of a cat, preparing to slaughter them.
Suddenly, her expression changed.
She nimbly vaulted over the wall and leapt out of the territory.
The remaining Claw Corpse Fiends, however, gave themselves completely to their instincts. They charged wildly in every direction, throwing themselves into battle with the soldiers.
Newte and his men fought desperately to hold the line, standing firm like a small boat refusing to sink in the middle of a raging storm.
"Damn Corpse Fiends! All of you, die!"
Just as the soldiers were about to reach their limit, Ashina arrived as reinforcement.
She charged straight into the horde, cutting left and right through the Corpse Fiends and scattering them in an instant.
Without stopping, Ashina urged her Drakewolf onto the wooden wall and had it unleash a torrent of dragonfire toward the enemies outside.
Countless Corpse Fiends were consumed by the flames.
Phield drew his longsword and began cutting down the Claw Corpse Fiends one after another, killing four or five in rapid succession while covering the retreat of the serfs.
"Victory!"
"Long live our lord!"
The moment they saw the reinforcements arrive and their own lord fighting at the forefront, the soldiers’ fighting spirit erupted.
They went berserk, hacking apart the remaining Corpse Fiends.
Only a small number of the Corpse Fiends had managed to climb inside.
After fifteen minutes of fighting, the attacking horde was completely annihilated.
"My lord, these Corpse Fiends do not appear to have come from Dawnfall Territory."
Newte was covered in blood and limped forward to report.
"They appeared out of nowhere and caught us completely off guard."
Phield’s expression remained cold.
"How many casualties?"
"Twenty seven slaves dead. Nine soldiers killed and twelve wounded."
The sickening smell of blood and iron filled the air.
The surroundings were a complete mess. Half built barracks had collapsed, freshly planted crops had been trampled into the dirt, and residents had been slaughtered like livestock.
Cries and sobs echoed from every direction.
A strange fury surged repeatedly through Phield’s chest.
He clenched his teeth.
"Why does everyone keep forcing us into a corner? Why is it so damn difficult to simply farm our land and live in peace?"
A decaying empire.
A twisted family.
Rebels with absolutely no humanity.
None of them treated people like human beings. To them, ordinary people were nothing more than pigs and dogs that could be slaughtered at will.
Phield had brought these people, people who had been pushed to the lowest depths of society, here for one simple reason.
They only wanted to find a piece of land where they could live in peace and dignity like human beings.
Such a simple wish, yet somehow it was almost impossible to achieve.
They had only just begun.
Their lives were finally starting to improve.
And now these damn corrupted creatures had appeared again, charging into their territory and slaughtering innocent people without mercy.
Was there truly nowhere in this world where people could simply live?
"I will avenge the soldiers and residents who died!"
Phield’s fists clenched tightly.
"No one is allowed to slaughter the people of my Nightfall Domain with impunity. No one!"
