The young boy smiled. He ignored the other party’s threatening demeanor and simply clasped his hands behind his back before continuing.
"And you aren’t? Just a moment ago you were fine, then you collapsed and writhed on the ground. After that, you got up and cursed at me. Is this the behavior of someone who has just lost their family?"
"Moreover... judging by your belongings, you should be from Cleaved Cliff City, right? But the city that was raided by bandits was Fine Wood City. Furthermore, for the townsfolk who were raided to still have this much baggage left, those bandits must have been very kind."
"Ah, or are you actually one of the bandits? What’s your purpose in blaming my sister-in-law for this? Is it because she’s too smart, and you’re afraid she’ll find a way to deal with you?" The young boy spoke sharply.
Each word was direct and serious, showing the qualities of a good man. Just from this exchange, it was evident that he would grow up to be a good official in the future.
"Oh, or are you actually one of Furen Mu’s people? Trying to defend her by framing an innocent villager?" The middle-aged man hesitated slightly when his origin was exposed. However, not everyone knew about this, and if he continued to stand firm, what could others say? Therefore, he fought back, refusing to concede, and showed that he was being bullied.
"How ridiculous. Every time something happens, you claim you’re being framed just because you’re a villager. In that case, my sister-in-law is just a woman. If she had the capability to command a band of thieves, she wouldn’t be living like this."
"Wouldn’t it be better to stay in Du Region and rob Bai Region instead? Or does she lack any intelligence to the point of not thinking about survival, yet the bandits still follow her despite her lack of wits?" Xiao Long retorted, leaving the middle-aged man speechless.
"Moreover, your identity isn’t hard to verify. My brother is gathering the registration of the victims. What is your wife’s name? Your child’s name?"
"And then there’s Cleaved Cliff City again. The information you provided can be cross-checked with the various villages’ tax records and other details. The Region has its laws and regulations. It’s not a place where anyone can spout nonsense. If you can lie about your own hometown, it’s clear that your words are unreliable."
"And don’t start yelling like a plague-stricken person as you did earlier, because I’m going to ask the Wang to investigate this matter. You all know, don’t you, that the Wang has never harbored ill intentions toward the Region?"
"Even the Wang trusts and supports my brother and sister-in-law, but who are you to tarnish their reputation like this? Perhaps you have malicious intentions toward Bai Region. Is it not because Bai Region is flourishing and developing so well that villains like you cannot stand it and want to see it falter, just as Du Region once did? Why not propose directly to my sister-in-law to move to another Region and work for them instead?"
As Xiao Long continued to speak, he became more impassioned. He knew bits and pieces of the situation through letters from his brother and sister-in-law, so he understood the intentions of these people well. Seeing that the young boy wasn’t as easy to deal with as he initially thought, the middle-aged man began to stammer in fear.
The middle-aged man quickly stood up, looking for an escape route. He no longer dared to stay. However, the soldiers accompanying him didn’t give him any chance to flee. Soldiers surrounded him on all sides—left, right, front, and back.
The man who had been paid only a few taels began to sweat. He merely wanted to cause a disturbance, to make people speak ill of Furen Mu. He was indeed a local from Cleaved Cliff, but because he had to help carry goods with a trading caravan, he took this opportunity to earn some extra money.
As long as he caused a disturbance, his job would be considered successful. However, the young boy’s accusations were too severe, claiming that he was one of the bandits. What is the penalty for being part of a bandit group? Isn’t it the death penalty? And what would be the punishment for slandering an official? He never knew and never thought he would have to find out. Who would have thought that an ordinary villager like him would end up entangled in such a major issue?
“Th-This matter...” The middle-aged man felt trapped, with no way out. Every path seemed wrong. He had to choose between facing death or a lesser punishment, yet neither option was reassuring.
Seeing his jittery demeanor, the surrounding villagers began to understand the situation. It turned out that this man was not truly affected by the raid. He had come to deceive them, to make them misunderstand Furen Mu based on false rumors.
“Hey! Who exactly are you? You’re not someone who lost their family to bandits, are you?”
“You scoundrel. How dare you deceive us? Do you think we, the people of the capital, are fools?”
“I thought as much. How could Furen Mu be in league with bandits? If she were truly wealthy, would she need to live so modestly? But this man even brought up prophecies, which completely threw me off.”
“So, the prophecy didn’t refer to Furen Mu? Does this mean she’s been misunderstood all along?”
“Someone must be using this situation to bully Furen Mu. She’s truly pitiful. People have come to see her as evil, even though she’s helped the people of Red Earth City, managed an epidemic, and has extensive medical knowledge that impressed the embassy. Could it be that Du Region orchestrated this out of jealousy toward Bai Region?”
The more the townsfolk spoke, the clearer the truth became. It seemed too intentional to harm Furen Mu. Although they still believed in the prophecy out of superstition, upon careful consideration, they realized that without Furen Mu’s intervention, who knows what state Bai Region would be in now.
It must be said that having Furen Mu in Bai Region was more beneficial, wasn’t it? During the severe epidemic, if it weren’t for Furen Mu’s knowledge of medicine, when would they have been able to control the outbreak? How many people would have died?
Moreover, with Furen Mu’s wisdom, even when the supply of Ming Fa herbs was insufficient, she found a way to cultivate them in the barren city of Red Earth City, a place people called “hell.”
“I think Furen Mu might not be the demon in the prophecy but rather a savior sent by Buddha to dispel evil,” someone voiced, and others who shared the sentiment nodded in agreement.
“That’s definitely true. Think about it, if Furen Mu hadn’t come to our Bai Region, there was already a severe epidemic. Even the royal physicians couldn’t help. People around Red Earth City were fleeing for their lives. How could this be called evil brought by Furen Mu?”
“Maybe we need to find out who the real villain is, but it’s definitely not Furen Mu.”
The more they thought about it, the more they concluded. Meanwhile, the middle-aged man who had been performing earlier was now apprehended by the soldiers. They needed to find out who had the audacity to create such divisive rumors.
Unfortunately, the greedy man had no clue who his employer was. He only saw them wearing black clothes with a hood covering their face. As a mere porter with the caravan, he couldn’t provide any useful information. Consequently, the authorities dealt with him by administering several dozen lashes, leaving him bedridden for months before finally releasing him.
Back to the present situation, after Xiao Long successfully dealt with the loudmouthed people, he saw that the villagers had come to their senses. They all headed to his sister-in-law’s manor.
This grand procession made its way to Governor Mu’s manor. The 500 soldiers that the Wang had provided still appeared formidable, and seemed even more disciplined under the management of the former Great General of Du Region. They helped carry many goods brought from Red Earth City, including numerous chests of banknotes obtained from selling Red Earth City’s land.
There were also vegetables, fruits, and other produce given by villagers along the way. This clearly showed the immense love and favor the people had for the Wang of Red Earth City and his wife.
However, upon entering Governor Mu’s manor, they were surprised to see over 500 small tables set up in the spacious former royal palace grounds.
There, dishes were already laid out, with beautiful glasses and neatly arranged chairs and tables. There was large, carefully written characters, and a beautiful woman, looking as if she had descended from the heavens, stood waiting.
“Welcome home,” the beautiful woman said in a bright voice. Although her belly was prominently rounded, indicating her pregnancy, it did not diminish her beauty at all.
Clap, clap.
She clapped her hands, signaling. Soon, a variety of dishes were brought out, the fragrant aroma whetting their appetites. After their long journey, they had to eat sparingly, unable to indulge as they had in Red Earth City or even while traveling with Furen Mu.
Seeing so much food, they were dazzled.
“Everyone, please choose your seats. This meal has been prepared for you. Eat until you’re full, and if you’re not, just let the kitchen know,” Yueqian said with a smile. Then she waved to her two younger siblings.
“Xiao Long, Huan’er, come here. I’ve prepared food for you.” When she said this, the two children teared up. They hadn’t seen their sister-in-law and elder brother for many days. Though they were happy in Red Earth City, it wasn’t the same as being together as a family.
The warmth and care from their sister-in-law made them feel the essence of family. She genuinely cared for them, despite being a sister-in-law who was often despised by others. Yet, her true nature was good, which was a blessing for them.
Never did they think that villagers like them, who used to struggle for food, would see a day like this. Xiao Long wiped his tears, vowing in his heart to support his elder brother and sister-in-law well in the future. He would repay the kindness that had transformed his life.
“Let’s go, Huan’er,” he touched his sister’s back, only to see the little girl running towards the beautiful lady. The young boy felt slightly embarrassed but said nothing.
When Huan’er ran over, she might have forgotten that her sister-in-law was pregnant, causing her to be unable to stop in time. Fortunately, Wan Gui, who was wary. This middle-aged woman was hostile towards the two children, so she blocked her way. Of course, it also saved Yueqian’s safety.
“Don’t run around like that. Furen Mu is pregnant. Doing this could harm her,” Wan Gui said respectfully but without hiding her displeasure. She scolded straightforwardly, and Yueqian understood her concern, not making a big deal out of it. Wan Gui meant well, and the minor rebuke was something Huan’er should not take to heart.
“I, I’m sorry, sister-in-law,” the little girl was startled. She had simply missed her sister-in-law too much and hadn’t thought about the danger. She only wanted a hug to ease her longing.
Because she had no ill intentions, it was not surprising that she felt guilty.
“It’s alright. Let’s go inside,” Yueqian said, pushing the child gently to walk ahead, sending a glance to her husband’s master to join them in the meal.
Even though he was an important person, he was still a man, and getting too close was not appropriate for a lady. Therefore, he was asked to dine with the soldiers outside. The former great general didn’t mind much; he had been a mere beggar before. He wasn’t attached to anything except his vendetta.
