The following day was quieter.
Too quiet for Noah’s liking.
He sat outside the academy building, watching students move through the courtyard. The transport delay had changed everyone’s plans, but most had adapted quickly. Some explored Hildgard. Others trained.
Noah did neither.
His eyes remained fixed on the three moons fading behind the morning clouds.
"You’re thinking too loudly."
Noah looked beside him.
Sophia had appeared with Luna.
"That’s not a real thing."
"It is for you."
Luna sat down on the stone bench.
"You’ve been here for almost an hour."
Noah glanced at her.
"Are you keeping track?"
Sophia answered for her.
"We are now."
Noah sighed.
"Fantastic."
Sophia smiled.
"You’re welcome."
Laura approached from the academy entrance.
She was carrying several books.
Eric followed behind her.
"Please tell me we’re not studying."
Laura looked at him.
"We’re not."
Eric visibly relaxed.
"Good."
Damien arrived shortly afterward, completing the group.
For several minutes, they simply sat together.
It was strangely peaceful.
No tournament.
No fighting.
No academy rankings.
Just the six of them sitting beneath Hildgard’s morning sky.
Noah almost wished it could stay that way.
Laura looked toward the books in her hands.
"I went to the public archive."
Sophia became interested.
"Did you find anything about that symbol?"
Laura shook her head.
"Not directly."
She opened one of the books.
"But I found references to several old noble families."
Eric groaned.
"That sounds boring already."
Sophia elbowed him.
"Let her speak."
Laura smiled faintly.
"Some of them disappeared from public records centuries ago. Others moved away from the central kingdoms."
Noah looked toward the page.
"And?"
Laura hesitated.
"Some of the names felt familiar."
Her fingers tightened around the book.
"Too familiar."
Noah remembered their conversation yesterday.
Something from her past was slowly returning.
Luna gently touched Laura’s shoulder.
"You don’t have to force yourself."
"I know."
Laura closed the book.
"But I want to understand."
Noah looked at her.
There was something determined in her expression.
For some reason, he understood that feeling.
He wanted answers too.
The problem was that sometimes answers opened doors that should have remained closed.
Across the city, Alcris stood inside an abandoned storage building.
A small object rested on the table before him.
One of the three medallions.
Balgard.
Its surface was ancient and worn, but the moment Alcris touched it, his mana reacted violently.
The room shook.
He immediately pulled his hand away.
His eyes narrowed.
"So it’s real."
The student beside him looked nervous.
"Should we take it somewhere safer?"
Alcris ignored him.
He stared at the medallion.
A faint symbol was carved into its center.
Three circles.
The same symbol from Milstrif Library.
His perception stirred.
And with it came another sensation.
Noah.
Alcris’s expression slowly changed.
The connection was becoming clearer.
"Find the other two."
The student swallowed.
"Even if we don’t know where they are?"
Alcris finally looked at him.
"Then search."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
The student immediately nodded.
"Understood."
Once he was alone, Alcris picked up the medallion again.
A small smile appeared.
"Let’s see what happens when all three are together."
Later that afternoon, Noah left the group and wandered through Hildgard’s central streets.
He wasn’t looking for anything.
He simply needed to move.
The city was crowded, but Noah found comfort in disappearing among ordinary people.
He stopped beside a small stall.
The merchant handed him a drink.
Noah took it and turned away.
His system suddenly appeared.
[WARNING.]
Noah stopped.
The screen flickered.
[EXTERNAL RESONANCE DETECTED.]
His grip tightened around the cup.
"What does that mean?"
No response.
A second message appeared.
[RAGNAROK DEAD ZONE RESONANCE: 2%]
Noah’s face darkened.
It had increased again.
Inside his mind, a quiet voice spoke.
Someone has touched something they shouldn’t have.
Noah looked around.
The busy street continued as normal.
"What?"
The pieces are moving.
"Whose pieces?"
Dead Zone remained silent.
Noah clenched his jaw.
"Stop talking in riddles."
A quiet laugh echoed through his mind.
You will understand soon enough.
The system disappeared.
Noah stood motionless among the crowd.
For the first time, he didn’t feel like Hildgard was simply delaying their journey home.
Something was keeping them here.
Something unfinished.
And Noah was beginning to realize that whatever waited beneath the three moons...
Was waiting for him.
Laura stood at the window of her room.
Hildgard stretched beneath the evening sky, its old streets glowing under the approaching night. From this distance, the city looked peaceful.
Almost beautiful.
Laura rested her hand against the glass.
Her mind was somewhere else.
I should tell him.
She had thought the same thing countless times.
Yet every time she imagined sitting Noah down and telling him everything, the words became heavier.
Not because she didn’t trust him.
That was the problem.
She trusted him more than almost anyone.
A knock interrupted her thoughts.
"Come in."
The door opened.
Luna entered first, followed by Sophia.
Laura turned.
"You two don’t knock properly, do you?"
Sophia closed the door.
"We knocked."
"You opened the door before I answered."
"Technicality."
Luna smiled.
"We wanted to check on you."
"I’m fine."
Sophia immediately pointed at her.
"That’s three times today."
Laura blinked.
"What?"
"People who say they’re fine when they’re clearly not should be fined."
Luna covered her mouth to hide a laugh.
Laura finally smiled.
"You made that rule up."
"Yes."
The three girls sat together near the window.
For a while, nobody spoke.
Sophia eventually looked toward Laura.
"Can I ask you something?"
Laura nodded.
"Where are you really from?"
The question landed harder than expected.
Laura’s smile disappeared.
Luna glanced at Sophia.
Sophia continued carefully.
"You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. It’s just..."
She looked down.
"We know surprisingly little about you."
Laura understood.
She had always kept her past distant.
Even at Valhalla Academy.
Especially there.
Laura looked toward the city.
"I come from a wealthy family."
Sophia waited.
Luna remained silent.
"We had everything."
Laura’s voice was quiet.
"Servants. Guards. A large estate. People who constantly watched what I did and who I spoke to."
Sophia’s eyes widened slightly.
Laura continued.
"But none of it felt like mine."
A memory appeared.
A younger Laura standing before enormous gates.
A carriage waiting behind her.
Someone calling her name.
She remembered turning around.
And running.
Laura’s fingers tightened.
"I left because I wanted a normal life."
Luna looked toward her.
"Just like that?"
Laura smiled sadly.
"Nothing about it was simple."
Sophia’s expression softened.
"Does your family know where you are?"
Laura remained quiet.
That silence answered enough.
Before either girl could ask another question, Laura spoke again.
"Noah knows a little."
Sophia immediately looked up.
"Of course he does."
Laura blinked.
"What does that mean?"
Sophia smiled.
"Nothing."
Luna laughed.
Laura narrowed her eyes.
"Both of you are strange."
Sophia leaned back.
"But you’re going to tell him the rest eventually, right?"
Laura looked toward the window again.
Her thoughts returned to Noah.
"I don’t know."
Outside the academy district, Eric and Damien were returning from the central market.
Eric carried a bag of food.
Damien carried nothing.
Eric glanced at him.
"You know you could have bought something."
"I didn’t want anything."
"That’s not the point."
Damien looked exhausted already.
Eric laughed.
As they passed through a narrow street, Damien suddenly stopped.
Eric took two more steps before noticing.
"What?"
Damien looked toward the darkness between two buildings.
Someone had been there.
He was sure of it.
"Nothing."
Eric stared at him.
"You’re becoming worse than Noah."
"Impossible."
They continued walking.
Neither noticed the figure watching from above.
Alcris sat inside the abandoned storage building.
Balgard rested before him.
The medallion had changed.
Thin lines of light moved across its surface.
Alcris watched silently.
His perception had become restless.
He could feel it.
A connection.
Not complete.
But growing.
"Noah..."
He whispered the name.
The medallion pulsed once.
Alcris’s eyes widened.
At the same moment, Noah stopped walking several streets away.
His chest tightened.
A notification appeared.
[WARNING: EXTERNAL ARTIFACT RESONANCE DETECTED.]
Noah stared at it.
"What artifact?"
No answer.
Instead, another notification appeared.
[RAGNAROK DEAD ZONE RESONANCE: 3%]
Noah’s expression changed.
Three percent.
Yesterday, it had been two.
The increase was accelerating.
Inside his mind, Dead Zone spoke.
He has one.
Noah’s breathing slowed.
"Who?"
For once, the answer came immediately.
Alcris.
Noah stood completely still.
His eyes hardened.
"So he’s involved."
Dead Zone’s voice became quieter.
More than you realize.
The system vanished.
Noah looked toward the distant streets of Hildgard.
A cold wind moved through the city.
For the first time since the tournament ended, Noah no longer felt uncertain about what was happening.
Someone was making a move.
And Alcris had finally stepped onto the board.
