The Extra who regained his past life memories

Chapter 43 – Space Element Training (Part 1)

A bright grin spread across my face as I walked toward the center of the training ground.

Taking a deep breath, I slowly closed my eyes and focused on my Space Affinity.

Unlike Ice or Darkness, Space felt... strange.

Distant.

Elusive.

It was as if I were reaching for something that wasn’t truly there.

Ice responded with a familiar chill.

Darkness answered like an endless abyss.

But Space...

Space simply existed.

Everywhere.

And nowhere.

I slowly gathered mana in my palm and attempted to manipulate the space around me.

My goal was simple.

Before creating any advanced spell, I needed to obtain Space Control.

Without proper control, every future idea I had would remain nothing more than imagination.

And I had far too many ideas waiting to become reality.

Space Storage.

Blink.

Perception skills.

Movement techniques.

My head was practically overflowing with possibilities.

But before any of them...

I needed a proper foundation.

I slowly guided my mana according to the image forming in my mind.

For a brief moment...

I felt Space respond.

My eyes lit up.

"It’s working!"

Then—

Crack.

The structure collapsed instantly.

A sharp headache assaulted me.

"Ugh!"

I staggered backward and instinctively clutched my forehead.

Before I could lose my balance, Astrid appeared beside me.

"That’s enough."

Her hand rested lightly on my shoulder as a gentle stream of mana flowed into my body, easing the pain almost immediately.

I rubbed my forehead with an awkward smile.

"That failed faster than I expected."

Astrid snorted.

"If Space Affinity were easy, everyone would use it."

Then her expression grew serious.

"Space Affinity is one of the rarest affinities in existence."

"Throughout history, many people who awakened it died because they couldn’t control their own power."

Her crimson eyes narrowed slightly.

"The ones who survived..."

"...were usually elites among elites."

I could only smile bitterly.

No pressure.

After resting for several minutes, I took another deep breath.

"Let’s try again."

Once more, I gathered mana.

Once more, I reached toward Space.

...

The second attempt failed.

The third lasted a little longer before collapsing.

The fourth almost stabilized.

The fifth distorted the surrounding space violently before dispersing.

By the tenth attempt, sweat covered my forehead, and nearly half of my mana reserves had already been exhausted.

Even so...

I didn’t stop.

Every failure taught me something.

Every collapse revealed another flaw.

The shape was wrong.

The mana flow was unstable.

The surrounding space wasn’t anchored properly.

Little by little...

Piece by piece...

I corrected every mistake.

Astrid silently watched from the side.

The longer she observed, the more surprised she became.

Most people would have grown frustrated after failing so many times.

Some would have given up entirely.

Gray was different.

Every failure was simply another answer.

Another lesson.

Another step forward.

He never became impatient.

He never cursed his bad luck.

Instead, he calmly analyzed every mistake before trying again.

It was a level of patience rarely seen in someone so young.

Finally...

On the twelfth attempt—

Something changed.

A tiny distortion appeared above my palm.

The surrounding air twisted ever so slightly.

Space itself folded inward.

A small crack, no larger than a marble, appeared in front of me before disappearing only moments later.

At the same time—

A familiar notification appeared before my eyes.

[Congratulations!]

[You have gained the skill: Space Control (F)]

My eyes widened.

"I did it!"

A smile spread across my face before I could stop it.

Although the skill was only F-rank...

Obtaining it meant everything.

I had finally established a genuine connection with my Space Affinity.

Astrid walked over and gently patted my head.

"Good work."

A faint smile appeared on her face.

"For your very first day seriously training your Space Affinity..."

"...that’s already absurd progress."

I couldn’t stop grinning.

Now things would become much easier.

Space Control wasn’t my goal.

It was the foundation.

Every Space-related spell I wanted to create in the future...

Would be built upon it.

After resting for a while and recovering some of my mana, I immediately sat back down.

Astrid raised an eyebrow.

"Already continuing?"

I nodded enthusiastically.

"Of course."

Now that I had obtained Space Control, I wanted to test one of the ideas that had been stuck in my head ever since yesterday.

Space Storage.

I already had a rough understanding of how space rings worked.

Amy owned one, and I had watched her use it countless times.

A space ring contained an independent pocket of space connected to its owner through mana. By establishing that connection, the owner could freely store and retrieve items whenever they wished.

If a ring could accomplish something like that...

Then there was no reason I couldn’t create something similar myself.

At least...

That was my theory.

I closed my eyes once more.

This time, instead of simply manipulating the surrounding space, I imagined creating an entirely separate one.

A small room disconnected from reality.

A place untouched by the outside world.

A place where time barely flowed.

A place that belonged solely to me.

Once the image became clear, I carefully poured my mana into it.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

The space began to form.

For a brief moment, it remained stable.

Then—

Crack.

The entire structure shattered.

The mana dispersed like broken glass, disappearing into the surrounding air.

I frowned.

"...Again."

Without wasting any time, I started over.

The second attempt lasted a little longer.

The third failed almost immediately.

The fourth nearly succeeded before collapsing.

The fifth shattered even faster than the third.

Hours slipped by.

Again and again, my mana reserves emptied.

Again and again, I recovered before trying once more.

Yet I never considered giving up.

Every failure taught me something new.

The walls weren’t stable enough.

The connection between myself and the storage space was too weak.

The surrounding space needed a proper anchor.

Each mistake revealed another flaw.

And each flaw brought me one step closer to success.

Astrid watched quietly from the side.

Unlike before, she no longer looked surprised.

Instead...

She seemed thoughtful.

Watching Gray create original spells had become strangely fascinating.

Most mages learned magic created by countless generations before them.

Gray...

Created his own.

He failed.

Adjusted.

Improved.

Then failed again.

His thought process resembled that of an experienced researcher rather than an eight-year-old child.

It was difficult not to admire.

Meanwhile, I remained completely absorbed in my work.

Outside sounds gradually disappeared from my awareness.

The only thing occupying my mind was the image of that small room.

Its walls.

Its boundaries.

Its connection to me.

I refined every detail repeatedly.

Then—

Around my twentieth attempt—

Something clicked.

The mana that had resisted me countless times suddenly became calm.

The image inside my mind grew crystal clear.

Every part of the structure fit together perfectly.

For the first time...

The space remained intact.

I froze.

"...I did it."

I could feel it.

Somewhere beyond ordinary reality...

A tiny independent space now existed.

More importantly...

I could access it.

Not with my eyes.

But with my mind.

The sensation was impossible to describe.

It felt as though a small room had appeared somewhere inside my consciousness.

I couldn’t physically see it.

Yet I knew it existed.

I knew exactly where it was.

And somehow...

I instinctively knew where anything placed inside it would be located.

It was a strange feeling.

Almost like having an extra sense.

Slowly, I inspected my newly created storage space.

It wasn’t very large.

Certainly nowhere near the size of the high-quality space rings used by powerful nobles.

But that didn’t matter.

This was only the beginning.

More importantly...

I could already sense something.

The space wasn’t fixed.

It could grow.

As my understanding of Space Affinity deepened...

As my control improved...

Expanding it should become possible.

A grin slowly spread across my face.

This...

This was exactly what I had hoped for.
