The Extra's Regressor Wives

Chapter 39: I won’t be too late again

The pounding of hooves echoed through the streets.

Leviana was practically forcing the horse to run at full speed. Her white nightgown billowed behind her in the wind, while her long silver hair, still uncombed, had become a tangled mess. Several strands repeatedly whipped across her pale face.

Her bare feet rested in the stirrups, already so cold that she could barely feel them.

She did not care.

Ever since leaving House Avarenne, Leviana had kept her eyes fixed straight ahead, following the last faint sense of direction left behind after Pandora severed the connection to the Ice Mirror of Pursuit.

Pedestrians hurried to both sides of the road when they heard the approaching hooves. Some recognized the crest of House Avarenne on the reins and stared in shock at the young woman racing past in nothing but a nightgown.

Their whispers were left far behind almost immediately.

Leviana heard none of them.

The only image left in her mind was Lathel standing before that black-and-violet box.

Pandora was with him.

That thought alone made her grip tighten around the reins.

’She hasn’t taken anything yet.’

That was what Pandora had said.

Leviana did not believe her.

In her previous life, she had once thought the price Pandora demanded was not too serious either. It was only a little each time. As long as Lathel did not use magic too often, surely there would still be enough time to find a solution.

By the time Leviana finally understood how many years of his life those tiny payments had added up to—

it had already been too late.

She would not let that happen again.

The horse tore through the eastern market before turning into a narrower street. The lingering sensation from the Ice Mirror suddenly became clearer, and Leviana immediately yanked on the reins.

The horse neighed loudly and reared onto its hind legs.

Leviana’s weakened body nearly flew out of the saddle.

She grabbed its mane tightly.

The instant all four hooves touched the ground again, she jumped down.

Her bare feet landed on a road covered in gravel.

A sharp bolt of pain shot through her soles.

Leviana only paused for an instant before running deeper into the alley ahead.

Her body had not truly recovered after five years of lying motionless. Even this short distance was enough to make her breathing ragged, and her legs had already begun to tremble.

She did not slow down.

A sharp stone sliced across the sole of her foot, leaving a red smear on the ground behind her. Leviana merely braced one hand against the wall for balance and kept moving.

At the end of the alley stood only an old stone wall.

There was no shop.

Leviana stopped, her chest rising and falling violently.

She stared at the peeling plaster and the vines crawling across the wall, yet the unease in her heart did not lessen at all.

She was certain Lathel was here.

"Lathel..."

Leviana stepped forward.

Three meters.

Then two.

The moment she reached out, before her fingertips could even touch the wall, a transparent ripple spread through the air.

Leviana immediately stopped.

She reached out again.

BOOM!

A massive force slammed directly into her palm.

Leviana was thrown several steps backward. Her bare foot scraped across the stone, tearing the wound open further, and she had to catch herself with one hand against the ground to keep from falling completely.

Pain forced a sharp breath from her lips.

But when Leviana raised her head again, her eyes had changed.

Found it.

She slowly stood, wiped away the blood that had appeared at the corner of her mouth, and stared directly into the empty space ahead.

"Pandora."

There was no response.

Leviana did not need one.

Cold mana immediately poured from her body.

White frost spread across the ground as dozens of ice spikes formed around her and shot forward at once.

BOOM!

The space shook violently.

The stone wall remained where it was, but after the attack, a transparent dome finally appeared.

The ice spikes struck its surface, sending waves of mana rippling across it and revealing a barrier that covered the entire end of the alley.

Leviana was about to attack again when a streak of violet-white lightning suddenly traveled backward along her mana.

CRACK!

She did not have time to sever the connection.

The lightning entered her right arm, raced toward her shoulder—

and suddenly became an entirely different kind of pain.

It did not strike only her body.

It touched her soul.

Leviana’s vision turned completely white.

Her right knee buckled, and her breath caught as though something had pierced straight through her mind before violently pulling at it.

It took several seconds before her vision returned.

Leviana stood again.

"Give him back to me."

The barrier did not react.

Three ice spears, each larger than a grown man, rapidly formed behind Leviana.

She swung her hand.

All three struck different points on the dome.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The barrier shook violently.

A tiny crack appeared.

Almost at the same moment, dozens of bolts of lightning fired back toward her.

Leviana immediately raised a wall of ice.

The first bolt pierced through it.

The second shattered what remained.

The third struck her shoulder directly, throwing her backward.

A black scorch mark immediately appeared across her white nightgown.

The remaining mana wrapped around her arm and chest before stabbing directly into her soul.

A groan escaped Leviana’s lips.

Her back slammed against the wall behind her.

Blood ran from the corner of her mouth.

She knew she could not continue like this.

If she still possessed the strength of the Sage she had been in her previous life, this kind of barrier might not have been able to stop her.

But her current body had only recently awakened after five years of immobility. Even though the Lucky Star Halo had begun repairing her foundation, it could not instantly restore all of her former strength.

Leviana leaned against the wall, breathing heavily.

If she stopped now, she could call for reinforcements.

She could wait for Catrina.

She could find Anna.

That would be the rational choice.

But the image of Lathel reflected in the Ice Mirror appeared in her mind again.

Pandora.

The box that had taken away his lifespan one day at a time.

Leviana pushed herself away from the wall.

’I waited too many times before.’

In her previous life, she had always thought things could be dealt with later.

She had believed Lathel was not important enough to become involved in major events.

She had refused to believe his warnings.

And she had always assumed there would still be time to make things right.

In the end, she had not even managed to apologize to him while he was still alive.

Leviana stepped forward again.

Blood from the soles of her feet left faint red marks across the stone.

This time, she did not attack from a distance.

She placed her palm directly against the barrier.

BOOM!

Lightning instantly surged into her body.

Leviana clenched her teeth.

Ice rapidly spread outward from her palm, covering a large section of the dome. She forced mana into the cracks she had created earlier, trying to freeze the barrier’s internal structure.

A bolt of lightning pierced through her shoulder.

She did not let go.

A second raced across her chest, breaking her breathing rhythm.

Her palm remained pressed against the barrier.

When the third struck, the pain stabbed directly into her soul and made her entire body convulse.

Her icy-blue eyes immediately turned red.

Tears spilled from them purely from the pain, yet the frost continued spreading across the barrier.

"I already said..."

Her voice trembled badly.

Another crack appeared.

Leviana stared at it and forced more mana forward.

"This time..."

A bolt of lightning struck directly into the center of her chest.

She coughed violently.

Blood splattered across the ice.

"I won’t be too late again."

CRACK!

The fracture lengthened.

Leviana poured almost all of her remaining mana into her palm.

Her silver hair flew wildly behind her beneath the chaotic current of air. Her nightgown had been torn and scorched in several places, while her pale bare feet were now almost completely covered in blood.

Still, she refused to let go.

"Break!"

BOOM!

The barrier retaliated one final time.

Countless arcs of lightning surged through Leviana’s arm, chest, and soul at once.

Her body was thrown backward.

But in the instant her hand left the barrier—

all the ice that had invaded the cracks exploded.

CRACK!

Hundreds of fractures spread across the dome.

One second later—

SHATTER!

The barrier collapsed.

The stone wall in front of her distorted before disappearing entirely, revealing the antique shop hidden behind it.

Leviana fell.

She caught herself with both hands against the stone and forced her head up.

Then she saw Lathel.

He had only just awakened.

One hand was still braced against the floor, and confusion remained all over his face.

Pandora’s sudden merging with his soul had caused Lathel to lose consciousness. By the time he came to, the entire antique shop was already shaking violently.

He had not even figured out what was happening before he saw Leviana.

Lathel froze.

She was kneeling just outside the entrance.

Her silver hair was disheveled, her white nightgown stained and scorched, and there was still blood at the corner of her mouth.

Worst of all were her bare feet, covered in cuts, and the way her entire body trembled as though she could barely remain upright.

Lathel immediately ran toward her.

Leviana looked at him.

The moment she saw that Lathel was still alive, all the pain she had just endured suddenly seemed unimportant.

He was not a cold corpse.

He was not the man who had died before she could apologize.

He was right in front of her.

"Lathel..."

The corners of Leviana’s lips had only just begun to rise when all strength left her legs.

She fell forward.

Lathel rushed in and caught her before her head could strike the ground.

He dropped to one knee with her weight, one arm supporting the back of her head while the other wrapped around her waist.

Then he immediately checked her breathing and pulse.

Alive.

But Leviana did not open her eyes.

Lathel gently shook her shoulder.

No response.

His eyes moved to her bloodied feet, then to the burns across her body, and finally toward the shattered barrier behind her.

Only a few seconds were needed for him to understand.

Leviana had come here because of him.

Lathel’s hands began to tremble.

’If I hadn’t gone out...’

He had only wanted to find work.

To prepare somewhere to live, then quietly leave once Leviana no longer needed him.

Yet somehow, she had ended up like this.

Just as Lathel lowered his head to check her condition again, Pandora’s voice suddenly sounded inside his mind.

"Stop shaking her. You could shake her until her neck snaps and she still wouldn’t wake up."

Lathel stiffened.

He immediately stopped.

Pandora continued,

"And if you actually break her neck, even I won’t be able to do anything about it. So be gentle, my boy."

Lathel completely ignored the way she addressed him.

He pointed at Leviana, pressed two fingers to his own wrist, then repeatedly gestured toward her.

Pandora was silent for several seconds.

"You’re asking whether she’s alive?"

Lathel nodded hard.

"She is."

His shoulders had only just relaxed when Pandora continued in a calmer voice.

"But her soul has sunk back down."

Lathel froze.

Pandora paused before saying,

"That barrier was not something someone with a soul in her condition should have forced her way through. The magical backlash was the easy part. The real damage was done to her soul."

Lathel’s hold around Leviana slowly tightened.

Pandora clicked her tongue.

"Congratulations. Just to find you, she nearly put herself back into the same state she was in five years ago."

The blood instantly drained from Lathel’s face.
