Chapter 31: The Boiler-Room Oracle

The ship no longer sailed; it fled. A dark, lean silhouette against the gunmetal sea, it pushed through the rolling swells with a new, urgent purpose. The deep, steady thrum of its engines had sharpened into a higher-pitched, insistent whine. It was the sound of a machine being asked to give more than it was designed to give, and protesting but obeying.

Below decks, in the roaring, sweating heart of the ship, the air was a solid wall of heat and noise. The two massive boilers glowed a sullen cherry-red behind their iron doors. Stokers, stripped to the waist and gleaming with sweat, moved in a grim ballet with shovels and wheelbarrows, feeding the ravenous fires. The smell was of hot metal, coal dust, and human effort.

In the slightly less infernal control niche, Chief Engineer Hiro and Ensign Lee existed in a state of perpetual, grimy awe. They huddled over a workbench cluttered with pressure gauges (two of which now had fresh hairline cracks), a half-eaten rice ball fossilized by heat, and a schematic that was rapidly becoming more charcoal than paper.

A new sound joined the symphony, a rapid, metallic tink-tink-tink-tink from the starboard high-pressure steam line.

“The new valve,” Hiro shouted over the din, not taking his eyes off the shuddering needle of the main pressure gauge. “It’s… chattering. Like it’s got a nervous condition.”

Lee, his uniform a lost cause, peered at his notes. “The Prince said it might. He said the spring tension was a compromise between response time and stability at this pressure.”

“He said,” Hiro muttered, mopping his brow with a rag that was already soaked. “He says a lot of things, Ensign. Things that ain’t in the Book of Proper Naval Engineering, Volume Six: Don’t Blow Yourselves Up. Where’s he getting this from? The ‘spring tension compromise’? The ‘steam chest condensation retro-baffle’? The… the angled coal grate?”

This last one was the source of both their wonder and their deepest confusion. Three days ago, Prince Zuko had descended into the boiler room, observed the flat iron grates upon which the coal burned for a few intense minutes, and had simply said: “Angle them.”

When a bewildered stoker had asked “How, sir?”, the Prince had taken a piece of chalk and drawn on the floor: a simple, sloping plane. “Fifteen degrees. The coal feeds down by gravity. The ash falls through here. The air draws more evenly. Less clinker, more consistent heat.”

It was absurdly simple. So simple that no one in the Fire Navy’s century of steam engineering had apparently thought of it. After a frantic session of hammering, bending, and swearing, the grates were now sloped. And the fires *did* burn more evenly. The temperature in the fireboxes was up a stable fifty degrees. The stokers were doing less frantic shoveling. It was a small miracle of basic physics.

“The angled grate,” Lee said, shaking his head. “It’s… it’s just a slope. Anyone who’s ever seen a hill could have thought of it.”

“But no one did!” Hiro exploded, gesturing wildly with his wrench. “For seventy years we’ve been shoveling onto flat plates like idiots! He walks in, looks at it for five minutes, and sees a hill! What else is he seeing that we’re not? Is he looking at the hull and seeing a… a fish? Is he looking at the screws and seeing a… a whirlybird seed?”

Lee couldn’t answer. His orderly mind was struggling with the Prince’s knowledge. It wasn’t vast or profoundly complex. It was pinpoint. Specific. It was the knowledge of a single, better way to do a simple thing.

“And the condensate return,” Lee said, tapping another note. “Telling us to insulate the feedwater line with hemp rope and tar. That’s… that’s peasant technology. Farmers insulate pipes like that. But he knew the exact heat loss from an uninsulated three-inch pipe over twenty feet. He calculated the coal we were wasting reheating cold feedwater. He didn’t guess. He gave me a number. ‘You’re losing twelve pounds of coal per hour, Ensign. Insulate it.’”

“A prince who does a stoker’s fuel math,” Hiro grumbled, but there was a reluctant respect in it. “And he was right. The steam pressure is steadier. The fires don’t have to work as hard to recover when we inject new water.” He squinted at Lee. “You’re the scholar. Is there… a class on this? At the Academy? ‘Practical Thermodynamics for Disgraced Royals’?”

“No, Chief,” Lee said, smiling faintly for the first time in hours. “There is not. There’s advanced metallurgy, fluid dynamics, propulsion theory… but it’s all abstract. Grand principles. This…” He waved a hand at the roaring room. “This is applied. Desperately, cleverly applied. It’s like he’s spent a lifetime fixing broken engines in back-alley machine shops, not studying theory in a palace library.”

Another thought struck him. “He knew the exact grade of coal in our bunkers. Just by looking at a lump. He said ‘This is Southern Yu Dao bituminous, high in sulphur. It will burn hotter but corrode the flues faster. Increase the draft to keep the flame oxidizing.’ How does a prince know coal grades?”

“Maybe he mined it himself during his exile,” Hiro joked darkly. “Punishment detail. ‘Here, Prince, sort this pile. The shiny lumps go to the nice boilers.’”

Before Lee could reply, the subject of their speculation materialized in the doorway. Prince Zuko was a vision of practical ruin. He’d traded his tunic for a stoker’s leather apron over a sweat-soaked undershirt. His face and arms were smeared with a glorious mix of soot, grease, and something that looked like graphite. In his hands, he carried two ordinary-looking stoker’s shovels.

“The shovels are the wrong shape,” Zuko announced, his voice raw but clear. He didn’t bother shouting; he’d learned to pitch his voice to cut through the specific frequencies of the boiler room.

Hiro and Lee stared at the shovels. They looked like perfectly normal, fire-blackened, slightly-bent shovels.

“Wrong… shape, sir?” Hiro ventured.

“They’re too deep. The coal gets packed in. You waste energy lifting it, and it doesn’t spread evenly on the grate.” Zuko laid them on the workbench. “We need them shallower. Wider. Like this.” He used his finger to draw in the charcoal dust on the bench, a broad, shallow scoop. “Less weight per load, faster cycling, more even distribution. The fire stays constant. Less work for the men, better burn for us.”

Lee blinked. It was another simple, glaringly obvious-in-retrofit idea. A shovel was a shovel. Until it wasn’t.

“We… we can hammer these out in the forge,” Hiro said slowly, already seeing it. “Flatten the bowls, widen the edges.”

“Do it,” Zuko said. He then turned his head, his eyes narrowing as he listened to a new, faint hissing rhythm from the port-side boiler. “Your steam chest drain valve on the port side is weeping. The packing is shot. It’s a minor loss, but at this pressure, minor losses add up. Repack it with the tallow-and-graphite mix, not dry hemp. It’ll last longer in the heat.”

Hiro’s jaw went slack. The drain valve was a tiny, inconsequential thing, buried behind a maze of pipes. The hiss was utterly drowned out by the general roar. Yet the Prince had heard it. Or… felt it? Known it?

“How did you…?” Hiro began.

“The pressure gauge flutter is irregular,” Zuko said, pointing a sooty finger at the main dial without even looking at it. “Not the big surges from the firebox. A faster, smaller pulse. That’s a small, steady leak upstream of the gauge. Only one thing it can be.”

He said it with the flat certainty of a man diagnosing a cough. Lee looked at the gauge. The needle was vibrating with a tiny, high-frequency jitter he’d dismissed as engine vibration. Now he saw the pattern.

The Prince wasn’t just giving them new ideas. He was reading the engine. Like a healer reading a pulse. He saw symptoms, a flutter, a color of smoke, a sound of a fire and deduced the ailment, then prescribed a shockingly simple cure: a slope, a shovel, some tarred rope.

“We’re gaining speed, sir,” Lee said, pulling out the latest log calculations. “Perhaps two, two-and-a-half knots from the combined modifications. It’s… remarkable.”

“It’s not enough,” Zuko said, his golden eyes meeting Lee’s. There was no arrogance, only a cold, relentless hunger for more. “But it’s what we can do with the metal we have and the time we’re given. Think in terms of waste, Ensign. Every puff of black smoke is wasted coal. Every hiss is wasted steam. Every shudder is wasted momentum. Find the waste. Eliminate it. That’s the only manual we have time for.”

He turned to go, then paused, looking back at the two soot-stained men. “And get some sleep. In shifts. An exhausted man misses the small leaks. And right now, we can’t afford to miss anything.”

He disappeared back into the heat haze, leaving Hiro and Lee in a silence filled only by the protesting whine of their overworked, newly-optimized engines.

Hiro picked up one of the “wrong” shovels, hefting it. “A shovel,” he said, wonder in his voice. “He came down here and reinvented the shovel.”

“He sees the function,” Lee murmured, his mind racing. “Not the object. He doesn’t see a ‘shovel,’ he sees a ‘coal distribution tool.’ And he asked if this was the best shape for that job.” He looked at Hiro, the profound oddness of it all settling in. “He thinks like… like a craftsman. A brilliant, obsessive, slightly terrifying craftsman who happens to have been born in a palace.”

Hiro gave a long, slow whistle. “You know what the scary part is, Ensign?”

“What?”

“If this is what he can do with a coal shovel and a bent grate in three days…” Hiro’s eyes drifted toward the deckhead, as if he could see through the iron to the prince’s quarters above. “What’s he planning to do when we find whatever it is we’re running toward?”

Lee had no answer. He just listened to the engine’s new, eager, slightly pained whine, a sound that was the direct result of a prince looking at the world and seeing not what was, but what could be, with a few brutal, simple improvements. It was a humbling, exhilarating, and deeply unsettling thought.
