Fortunately for the beasts, their planning was put on hold when they received another round of unexpected visitors.

But this time they were not customers.

A portal opened in the city, and powerful aura signatures filled the city, alerting the Lesser Watcher, and the High Priestesses that worked the store.

If Karl was available, they had been instructed to call him to the store, but when he arrived, these were not a bunch of Clan Leaders looking to get shiny new items to help in some Clan War.

They were all members of the Darklight Host.

"Welcome, welcome. I see that the Guild has sent us a whole Host of new customers, please do come inside, and I will have the staff prepare refreshments. You will not find the Blackwoods Branch lacking in hospitality."

The man at the front of the group laughed. "That appears to be true, I sense Divine Cooking in use, and someone in your branch is an Ancient Runemaster. Those items aren’t made by a standard Runecrafter."

Karl bowed slightly. "I’m glad that you appreciate my craftsmanship. Did you have a preferred snack? And coffee or tea? We have both, the bunnies will bring them to us in the sitting room."

"You keep bunnies?"

"Why would bunnies leave the Host? Most of the ones here are members, actually."

The group of new arrivals looked impressed, then laughed when they saw Lala push the cart of snacks into the front room, wearing a white Priestess robe with black and white ribbons in her hair.

"They really did take bunnies as members, and make them Immortal. Oh, this is going to be a fun day. I can sense it already."

Lala curtsied, and brought the cart into the meeting room in the back.

"This Branch really does go all out on the spatial magic, don’t they? There isn’t a single room in the Guild House that is not part of an altered space. I can see why you do it, this place has to be spectacular when you get around it.

But it’s a bit unconventional."

Karl shrugged. "Well, I am a Pet Sitter and an Ancient Runemaster. Separate spaces are kind of my thing. But I suspect that you are all here for a reason that isn’t a critique of my Guild House.

I’ll give you a tour of it later, I’m quite proud of it."

Everyone arranged themselves around the room, while one of the mages went to inspect the books in the shelves.

"Uhm, Branch Leader, are you aware that there is an entire section of the sitting room Library dedicated to Fae Erotica?"

Karl laughed. "Yes, I’m aware. It’s a bit of a long story, but it’s actually one of our most popular exports. The Blue Dragons have been spreading it through the Libraries at an astounding rate."

The mage laughed. "I am not in the least bit surprised. But who in your Guild would make something like that? And so much of it?"

"We have a Forest Trickster named Opal. But she doesn’t only write smut. Most of the books on the shelves were written by her, including the training manuals, the fresh copies of historical tomes, and such.

The room itself is my work for the most part.

Some of the decorations are real, we’ve been adding to it as time goes on, but the basic room and furniture are all part of the spell, so that if a negotiation goes wrong, I can simply repair the room with a bit of mana, instead of making all new furniture.

It will also allow us to change it for seasonal events, but we’ve not seen the need to do it so far."

The Mage nodded, satisfied, and then took her seat.

"The reason that we came here today is because your branch has caught the attention of the main branches of the Guild in the Divine Battlefields.

I don’t know if you’re aware what those are, but they’re worlds where the Guilds with members approaching Divinity challenge each other for the right to ascend. You see, reaching the level of a Demigod is something that is generally possible with enough understanding, time and practice.

But actually reaching the level of a minor god?

That requires power, faith, and a base of followers. If you can’t develop all three to a large enough extent, you can never be a true God.

The Guild that challenged you the other day is one of those Guilds.

The branch was immediately expelled from the greater whole, as they are our allies, and attacking allies that way is not acceptable, especially on a world like this, where there is no good reason for it.

That also made the main branches aware of your existence, as your formation was a bit of a unique one, as it’s not a branch of an outreach program, but a Mortal Branch that ascended.

Obviously, your Mortal World was one of the forgotten ones as well, or we would have sent someone to come get you when you first reached Immortality. But what’s done is done, and you’ve established a solid branch that has proven that they can withstand the rigours of the Immortal World.

With that track record, we’re not going to ask that you shut down the branch or relocate. But the Guild has decided that we can’t allow the Darklight Host to have a branch under threat, or an inferior branch that lacks the basic skills that all of our Outreach Programs should know.

Honestly, I’m shocked that you’re doing this well without assistance.

But then, you did come from the care of a Legendary Solo Member, who was overseeing a dying Mortal World. Perhaps her solitary nature is not as antisocial as we thought."

Karl laughed. "You say ’is not’, so I take it that you’ve met Lady Matilda recently?"

"Much to my personal annoyance. That old dragon is enough to give anyone a headache."

Karl could see how that would be true. Matilda in a new world, meeting new people after she left the Chaos Plane? That was a disaster waiting to happen.
