The thing waiting in the fifth chamber wore a clerk’s robe made from stitched scales, but two human legs supported a smooth, eyeless body. Its chest hung open around a vertical plate organ, where pages of wet flesh turned between ribs of black bone.
Images moved across those pages. A broken jaw faded first, followed by the ruptured organ and the listening tissue Kael had torn from the floor. The final page showed twenty-one living people and began washing the blood from their wounds.
Renn made a small sound. The plate turned one page toward him, as if it had found the throat that made the damage harder to steal.
Kael stepped forward before the last image faded. The clerk body raised two hands, each with ten fingers tipped by red hooks.
The hooks clicked, and a dead husher behind them dissolved into clean ash. One of Kael’s cracks vanished from the previous hall, while the memory of its impact weakened inside every survivor who had seen it.
Vaela’s blade trembled in her hand.
"It is reaching into the rooms behind us," Vaela said as the old crack disappeared. "If those pages keep turning, the wounds will remain, but none of us will remember what caused them."
Jaro pressed a hand over his bruised ribs. "I remember every creature that bit me, and I would prefer to keep blaming them."
Kael watched the next page begin to turn. He needed Gravity Vector Impact to leave damage the plate could not soften, Velocity Movement Authority to reach it first, Metaphysical Resistance and Mind Soul Anchor to hold what had happened, and Core Mass Density to put his whole body behind the strike.

============================================
Impact Witness Sovereignty did not bloom gently. The unstable seed bit through Kael’s knuckles and made the dent beneath his fist harder for the plate to erase.
The unfinished seed burned through his hands, but Kael used it when the uncounting clerk moved.
Correction hooks flashed toward his face, throat, ribs, and hands. The plate organ turned pages faster than breath. Each hook that touched him tried to write the damage as unconfirmed before it landed. One hook opened his cheek. The wound went gray.
Kael punched the clerk in the chest.
BOOM!
The plate organ folded around his fist. For one half heartbeat the page tried to cross out the dent. Impact Witness Sovereignty flared.
Kael’s knuckles burned black. The dent stayed. Renn saw it.
"The impact stayed, and I can still see the dent!" Renn shouted.
The chamber recoiled from his voice. The clerk’s eyeless head snapped toward him. Orrek met it before it moved.
He slammed his ruined shoulder into the clerk’s side.
CRACK!
Pain folded Orrek’s face, but the blow staggered the clerk. A page inside its chest began swallowing the impact, so Kael grabbed it and tore it out.
RIP!
The clerk screamed from its ribs.
SCREECH!
The plate organ screamed through its ribs. Vaela darted in and cut two hooks from the left hand.
SLICE! SLICE!
The hooks fell and tried to crawl back to the clerk. Jaro kicked them under Kael’s boot.
CRUNCH!
"I dislike mobile punctuation," he said.
The clerk slammed both palms into the floor. Every crossed-out line in its plate glowed red, and damage from the rooms behind them began to fade. Broken witness organs blurred, leech stains thinned, and the silent crack behind them softened. Even the no-entry organ’s corpse became difficult to remember.
The survivors swayed as if the route were trying to convince their bodies that rescue had never arrived. Renn’s count cloth lifted. Twenty-one knots began loosening by themselves.
Kael moved. Gravemarrow Arrival Step flickered under his heel, unstable and angry, but he did not ignite it fully. He only let the weight gather. His foot struck the floor.
CRACK!
The fading stopped for one breath. Kael used it to catch the clerk by its robe and drive his forehead into the smooth face.
CRACK!
The face split, revealing a stack of blank scale slips packed tight enough to mimic a skull. Kael grabbed the slips and pulled them out in a wet white bundle. The clerk clawed at his arms. Correction hooks cut him open.
His wounds tried to go gray. Impact Witness Sovereignty flared again, vicious and incomplete. Red returned to the cuts.
Kael shoved the scale slips into the open plate organ and punched them through it.
CRUSH!
Pages burst from the clerk’s back. Red fragments spilled into the air, each carrying a sound from the rooms behind them.
BANG!
CRACK!
RIP!
SCREECH!
Four rooms of denied consequence came back at once. The chamber shook under the weight of its own corrections failing. Renn tied the count cloth knots with bloody fingers.
"All twenty-one are still here," Renn said.
The clerk reached for him. Kael caught its wrist. He twisted until all ten remaining fingers pointed the wrong way.
SNAP! SNAP! SNAP!
The plate organ stuttered. Kael drove his knee into it.
BOOM!
The organ ruptured, spraying ink-blood, page flesh, and red hooks across the floor. The uncounting clerk collapsed while its pages tried to hide the damage. Kael stepped on the plate.
SPLIT!
The torn page hovered above the corpse instead of falling. Red marks crawled across it, rebuilding the plate organ, the broken jaw, and every hook Kael had destroyed.
Its edge cut his fingers before he touched it. The wounds faded toward gray, but Impact Witness Sovereignty bit through his knuckles and forced the blood red again. Vaela caught his wrist long enough to see the change.
"Your cuts are returning, but they are opening deeper each time," she said. "Whatever you gained is hurting you while it holds them open."
Kael flexed once and felt the seed tear at his wrists. "It is not under control."
The clerk’s broken hand twitched, and one remaining hook crawled toward the page. Kael crushed it under his heel.
SNAP!
He caught the page with both hands. Its edges carved five lines across his palms while the red marks tried to restore the clerk from the chest outward. Pain locked his elbows, and his knees began to fold.
Orrek stepped beside him without touching the page. He planted his boots, pressed his uninjured side against Kael’s shoulder, and gave him enough support to stay upright. Renn kept his damaged voice steady as the cuts widened.
"Five cuts are still bleeding, and the page is still in his hands."
Vaela pressed cloth against Kael’s wrist without hiding the wounds. Jaro caught a loose hook before it reached his boot and kicked it toward the dead clerk. Their work did not make the seed safe, but it gave Kael time to crush the page.
CRUMPLE!
Red marks burst between his fingers. The clerk stopped moving, and the loose pages fell around it. Kael dropped the crushed page onto the split plate and stepped on both.
THUD!
The page curled beneath his boot, but it could no longer rebuild what they had broken. Renn crouched close enough to see the torn middle, while Vaela checked the dead plate and Orrek kept his weight beside Kael until the strain left his knees.
Jaro lifted one trembling hand toward the corpse. "I am going to remember this thing as the clerk with too many fingers, because I refuse to give it a better name."
The boy with the bowl gave a tired laugh. Nothing in the chamber moved to erase it.
The others did not laugh yet. When the clerk’s pages fell, damage from the last four rooms returned in uneven pieces. The burned-scalp woman remembered where a husher rod had bruised her hip, and the limping worker felt the floor split beneath his bad foot again. Orrek’s shoulder sagged as the strain of holding the jaw came back with its full weight.
Vaela moved through them before anyone could mistake returning pain for a fresh attack. She checked pupils, breathing, and the color around every reopened wound, while Sova kept the weakest workers sitting against the wall.
"Tell me what changed before you try to stand," Vaela said. "A remembered pain should match the wound you already carry, but anything new means one of those hooks reached you."
Answers came without order. A woman described heat under an old scar. The bowl boy admitted that two fingers had gone numb when the page turned toward him. Jaro found a gray line across his ribs and stopped joking long enough for Vaela to cut it open.
Renn stayed beside Kael, although speaking still scraped his throat. "The dead husher is gone, but I remember where it fell. I remember the floor cracking, Orrek breaking the clerk’s side, and Vaela cutting the hooks."
Orrek lowered himself against the wall and held his injured arm close. "I remember the shoulder hurting before I hit it, while I hit it, and much worse afterward. The page did not improve any part of the experience."
His complaint brought a few exhausted smiles. More importantly, every person could still connect pain to an action, a place, and someone who had witnessed it.
Impact Witness Sovereignty went quiet beneath Kael’s skin, although the cuts across his hands continued to burn. He could make damage remain, but only by letting the unfinished seed turn his own body into part of the impact.
Vaela bound his palms without covering the torn page from sight. The formation moved only after Renn confirmed all twenty-one voices, and Kael left the corpse where the next room could see exactly how it had died.
