The passage below the broken witness chamber opened in layers as thick stone leaves slid from the walls.
Each leaf was thick as a shield and wet with black fluid. Hook-shaped writing crawled across the stone, pointing toward Kael’s bloody heel, the crushed organ behind him, and the twenty-one survivors before every line bent toward the chamber below.
SCRAPE!
A broad altar rose from the floor on black-bone legs. Pale skin stretched over its drawers, and a ribbed spine clicked with every survivor’s breath. Three humanoids sat behind it with narrow mouth slits, quill-shaped fingers, and wrists dripping black fluid into kneecap bowls.
Vaela stopped at Kael’s left shoulder. "The writing follows our blood rather than the stone." The nearest body dipped a finger into its own wrist and drew a red hook in the air.
The words sank toward the cracked core residue still stuck to Kael’s heel. Kael looked at the ink.
The hook crawled toward the dried blood on Kael’s heel and spread over the shape of the organ he had crushed. Renn clutched the count cloth. "The mark is covering your footprint and everything tied to it." Orrek shifted beside him. "Keep the cloth on the living while we break whatever is drawing it."
The three bodies wrote faster, and the floor beneath the survivors darkened. A thin line ran from the crushed organ to the altar, passing under every living foot and tugging at breath, fear, and blood. Jaro watched it climb the bone legs. "I dislike anything that writes with part of its own hand."
Kael stepped forward, and the line climbed his boot with enough cold to numb the skin. Images of returned shadows, broken stands, and the counted twenty-one began sliding toward the altar.
Kael’s anger settled into weight. The old rooms had left broken organs, returned shadows, and living people behind them, and these bodies were trying to pull all of it beneath their altar. The Sovereign Root opened behind his eyes.
The cold line reached Kael’s old bruises. Mind Soul Anchor held the twenty-one names Renn had preserved, Metaphysical Resistance resisted the black fluid, Threat Perception Instinct found a second plate hidden inside the right body, and Core Mass Density slowed the line beneath his weight.

The line buckled around his boot, and all three bodies looked up.
Kael crossed the distance before the altar finished opening its drawers. The left body stabbed at his throat with a quill finger, but he caught the wrist and drove it through the pale surface.
CRACK!
Bone drawers burst open, spilling folded shadows, a crushed silence bell, the shape of Jaro’s bowl dent, and a smear of Renn’s blood.
Kael grabbed the clerk by the back of its skull and slammed its face into the open drawer.
BANG!
Black fluid sprayed as the middle body wrote across Kael’s ribs. Hooked letters burned into his skin and pulled him toward the altar.
Kael read the first word and hated it enough to move through pain. He drove his elbow into the clerk’s chest.
THUD!
The body folded, but the spine behind it clicked and began drawing the impact into its drawers. Vaela cut through the ribs.
SLASH!
Black pages spilled from the wound.
"The spine feeds every drawer," she said. "Break the altar before those plates swallow the impact."
Orrek moved before the third body could hook Renn’s count cloth. He planted one hand against the altar and shoved while the black line tightened around his scars.
Kael leaned harder into the altar. "Break the bone beneath their hands, and the drawers will lose the strength to pull from us." The altar shifted while Renn wrapped the count cloth around Kael’s wrist to feel the force.
"Orrek is holding the left side, Kael is breaking the center, and all twenty-one are behind them," Renn said.
The third clerk lunged for him. Jaro hit it with the cracked bowl.
CLANG!
The creature’s mouth slit tore sideways. Jaro ducked beneath six quill fingers while Kael tore the middle body from the altar and threw it into the third.
CRASH!
Both bodies struck the wall of stone leaves. The slabs began closing around them, but Kael followed and drove his knee into the middle creature’s chest.
CRUNCH!
The body split open, spilling black fluid, white ichor, and skin tags marked with stolen names. One held a child’s tooth beside a drawn crying face, while another showed a crushed hand beneath a kneeling figure. The older workers behind Kael recognized the images.
GASP!
The sound came from three throats at once as workers remembered old men using the same marks beside broken bodies. The surviving quill fingers twitched toward them.
The oldest worker pressed both hands against her mouth until the first shock passed. "Men in clean gray robes drew those hooks beside my brother after a press crushed his hand. They told us the mark meant he had chosen the wrong grip, although the press had split before he touched it."
Vaela moved close enough to study the tag without blocking the woman’s view. "Do you remember where they placed the first mark? I need the part you saw, not what they told you it meant."
"Across the wrist and the broken handle," the woman said. Her breathing steadied as she pointed to the creature’s exposed chest. "A black line joined both of them to a bone table, just like this one. My brother could not pull his arm away until they cut the line."
Kael saw the same black strand tightening between the altar and Orrek’s scarred hand. He broke the quill fingers before the first stroke landed, reached into the split body, and crushed the tag carrying the broken witness organ.
CRACK!
The black line snapped back toward the altar, and its drawers screamed through paper mouths. The first body tried to rise until Kael put his foot on its neck.
"The people behind me belong to themselves," he said. "You can keep whatever fear remains after I break you."
He pressed down.
CRUSH!
The creature’s head burst into black fluid and pale fragments. The altar shuddered while the remaining two bodies dragged themselves toward the skin tags.
Vaela cut one through the spine, Orrek smashed the other’s hands flat, and Renn counted both impacts. Jaro pulled a handle from one drawer before a huge iron stamp descended from the ceiling.
Red teeth glowed across the stamp’s face. The broken altar bled beneath Kael’s boot while black fluid crawled toward his heel print.
Kael dragged his heel through the fluid and left a black smear across the altar’s careful hooks. The nearest survivor saw the shape of a boot breaking their marks, stepped over it, and released a tiny broken sound through his nose.
HUFF!
He looked ashamed until Renn counted the step without looking away from the altar. The simple acknowledgment steadied him, and he crossed the black ridge with the others.
One surviving tag slid toward the oldest worker’s ankle with a hooked lung drawn across its surface. She was watching Kael and the ruined altar, so Kael covered it with his boot before it reached her.
CRACK!
The strip split beneath his heel. The worker flinched and drew a full breath without coughing.
Vaela lifted another tag on her blade point without touching it. The drawing changed from a broken body to a wounded altar and finally to an unmarked patch of skin.
"The mark is trying to hide what we broke," she said. "Destroy it before the last image disappears."
Orrek drove his thumb through the tag until it screamed and went limp. The altar’s drawers opened and closed around the sound.
CLACK! CLACK! CLACK!
Tiny tags crawled toward the drawers. Vaela pinned one with her blade and found a worker’s name buried beneath the image of a quill-fingered body. She scraped the creature away while the worker’s name remained.
Renn pressed the destroyed tag against the count cloth while his hands shook. "All twenty-one are alive, the black line is broken, and none of those bodies are moving."
The boy looked at the handle in Jaro’s hand. "Why did you pull that loose when the altar is already dead?"
Jaro examined the black fluid around its base. "I wanted something solid enough to test the next door, but I will leave it here if the metal keeps bleeding."
The fluid reached his fingers, and he dropped the handle beside the corpse.
The survivors crossed the ridge while Jaro examined the bleeding handle, and Kael crushed one final page before it reached Jaro’s name.
Vaela stopped Orrek before he followed them. The black line had left a hooked burn across his palm and pulled the damaged shoulder forward again. She braced his elbow against her knee, eased the joint back into its safest angle, and wrapped the palm without covering the mark.
"The line tightened whenever you pushed against the altar," she said. "You kept the left side from turning. Keep that shoulder low while it shakes."
Orrek tested his fingers one at a time. "I can drag or brace from the waist, and I can still use the chain if somebody else takes the first hard pull. I will not lift above the ribs."
Renn repeated the limit while marking Orrek’s place on the count cloth. The oldest worker crossed the ridge and drew a full breath without looking back at the shattered altar.
The black fluid beneath Kael’s heel cooled into a raised ridge. Every survivor stepped across it before the iron stamp slammed into the passage floor.
BOOOOM!
A red-jawed bell answered from deeper below, and rows of bone coins began clicking in the dark.
