Chapter 257: Chapter 230: Why
Shire watched the golden Giant Eagle wheel through the air, relentlessly attacking the Flying Goblins with its wings, talons, and beak. Although the goblins had membranous wings on their backs, they were clearly no match for the Giant Eagle in the sky.
The Giant Eagle repeatedly dodged the goblins’ lightning with agile rolls, causing their Lightning Technique spells to hit their own allies.
SCREECHES echoed continuously from the sky, drawing the gazes of the goblins on the ground. The more Bald Hide watched, the uglier his expression became. He felt like his side was about to lose. ’What’s the deal with these Centaurs? How do they have so many strange things? Powerful Magic is one thing, but they can even raise such a formidable Giant Eagle?’
Unfortunately, the battlefield situation gave him no time to think. A chorus of guttural cries erupted in front of him as a red-eyed goblin wielding a Great Sword charged straight at them.
’Did that guy just completely ignore the lightning and exploding trees?’ Bald Hide’s eyes went wide. He then shouted orders for his surrounding subordinates to surround the red-eyed goblin while he himself quickly retreated.
The red-eyed goblin swung its Great Sword and suddenly accelerated, crashing into the enemy crowd like a Cannonball. It roared a muffled slogan as the Great Sword in its hands swept continuously before it. It paid no mind to the enemies swarming it; even the Bone Spears they threw were quickly shaken to the ground.
"What’s with this goblin?" Bald Hide said through gritted teeth. ’It’s so frenzied, not like a goblin at all. Do those Centaurs have some way to control them, to drive them into a bloodthirsty craze?’
But then, a second thought occurred to him. If the enemy Centaurs really had such a method to change the cowardly nature of goblins, then a whole swarm of them should be charging. ’Judging by its build, it’s probably not one of the Bear Goblins. This is insane. It’s even wearing iron Armor.’
As if in response to his suspicions, a clamor of shouts began to rise from the distance. The noise was a chaotic babble, causing Bald Hide to furrow his brow. ’Just how many goblins are there?’
Soon, a group of goblins in strange attire charged forward, wielding all sorts of iron objects. They were followed by many Centaurs, who deliberately kept their distance from the Feathered Serpent Kingdom’s warband. Instead, they circled around from the sides, firing Arrows as they moved, looking as if they intended to surround the entire enemy force.
Bald Hide’s mind raced. Because of the Giant Eagle’s interference, the Flying Goblins could no longer pin down the enemy’s ground troops. Screams echoed constantly from the sky, and occasionally, a goblin would plummet to the earth with a loud THUD, turning into a smear of paste on the ground.
’What should I do?’ he wondered, even tapping his own forehead, trying to force a plan. But for some reason, his mind was a complete mess. The screams of his own goblins echoed from nearby, and he saw the red-eyed goblin send four enemies flying with a single Horizontal Sweep.
"SCREEE—" An eagle’s cry pierced the sky. Just as Bald Hide looked up, the Giant Eagle flapped its wings and dove violently toward the goblins on the ground. Its massive talons gouged two deep trenches in the earth like a pair of iron plows.
Then, before Bald Hide’s shocked eyes, the Giant Eagle did a roll on the ground. Its golden feathers vanished, replaced by brown fur. When it swiped out with a massive paw, Bald Hide finally saw it clearly: the Giant Eagle had transformed into a stout Owl Bear.
"GRAAAWR—" the Owl Bear bellowed, then charged like a fleshy cannonball into the fleeing goblins before it. Its impact sent many of the Feathered Serpent Kingdom’s goblins flying.
"What in the world is that thing?" Bald Hide’s mouth hung open in astonishment. He was frozen in place as the screams and shouts of his subordinates echoed all around. All the goblins were scattering like headless chickens, but unfortunately, when they reached the perimeter, they were met with a volley of Arrows. The Centaurs had quickly completed their encirclement.
’Is this the enemy the High Priest wanted me to deal with?’ Bald Hide panicked and tried to turn and flee. Unfortunately, he had only taken two steps before he was knocked to the ground by several of his screaming, chaotic subordinates. As he tried to push himself up, he was trampled back down by someone’s filthy foot.
"Why?" he screamed, only to have his face stomped on again.
...
Shire stood on a temporary wooden platform, surveying the goblins of the Feathered Serpent Kingdom before him.
Nearly every one of them was wounded. They sat on the ground, dejected, not daring to look up at the goblins patrolling around them with iron weapons.
"Looks like there’s quite a few of them," he grinned, beginning to count the sea of green heads before him.
It wasn’t long before Shire spoke with delight, "There are over 600 goblins here."
’If I can recruit all of them, plus the numbers from my own tribe, I’ll definitely have 1,200 troops.’ Shire clenched and unclenched his fists several times. ’This battle went well. In the future, my subordinates will also be able to comprehend combat skills on their own.’
He stood on the high platform with his hands clasped behind his back, chest puffed out and head held high. He swept his gaze across the entire area, then announced in a loud voice, "I am the leader of this tribe. You are all my captives now. Surrender or die?"
After his loud declaration, Shire watched the Feathered Serpent Kingdom goblins with satisfaction. He was waiting for them to line up and perform the ankle-touching ritual. ’With so many of them, I wonder how long the ritual will take. Oh well, it’s a necessary procedure.’
In the forest clearing, the cold winter wind blew relentlessly, making the wounded goblins from the Feathered Serpent Kingdom shiver. But not a single one of them came forward. They all sat silently on the ground, huddled together for warmth.
’Hmm? No one?’ Shire waited for over ten seconds, but not a single goblin stood up. He couldn’t help but frown. ’Are these guys really that proud? Not one of them wants to surrender?’
The 600 goblins huddled together without a sound. Even as guards waved weapons over their heads threateningly, not one of them stood up. None of them even spoke.
"Cyan Hide, come here." Shire looked to the side. He had to call his subordinate over to ask, "What’s going on with them?"
Cyan Hide ran over quickly, taking a deep breath to steady himself. The wound on his chest had only just healed, and the exertion still caused him to grimace in pain. "I don’t know. Logically, they should be performing the ritual right now, shouldn’t they?"
Shire thought for a moment with a frown, then jutted his chin. "Ask them who the leader is."
Soon, Bald Hide was dragged out. He stood before them cowering, head bowed, not daring to look up at Shire.
"Surrender or die?" Shire asked again.
Bald Hide held his breath for several seconds before muttering in a small voice, "The children of the Feathered Serpent God will not be Servants."
