Lenna had moved the apparatus to the roof. The decision had been practical, the Experimental Optics Laboratory was underground, windowless, designed for light-controlled conditions. Ideal for calibration. Useless for the thing she needed to test next. She needed to know if the apparatus could capture something it had not been aimed at. Something that was not an engine piston cycling in a glass observation panel. Something that was not designed to be captured.

She pointed the lens at the Ashenveil skyline.

The image appeared on the portable screen, a whitewashed panel, six feet across, mounted on a frame that the workshop had built in two days because Lenna had stopped asking politely and started submitting requisition forms with the word "urgent" underlined. The screen was not whitewashed plaster. It was a prepared surface, lime wash over stretched canvas over a pine frame, designed to be flat, uniform, and portable. The portability mattered. The plaster wall in the basement was not portable. The discovery needed to move.

The skyline appeared on the screen. Inverted, she had not solved the inversion problem, and the inversion did not matter for what she was testing. The buildings were upside down. The smoke from the foundry district rose downward. The sky was at the bottom of the frame.

Then the bird crossed.

Left to right across the projection, a dark shape against the inverted sky, a stormhawk, the military relay breed, wingspan wider than the lens aperture. The bird had not been scheduled. The bird had not been aimed at. The bird had entered the frame because the bird was in the sky and the sky was what the apparatus was capturing and the apparatus did not distinguish between the intended subject and the things that happened to exist in the same space as the intended subject.

The bird crossed the frame in approximately two seconds. The twelve engineers, the same twelve, plus Researcher Aven, who had arrived that morning from the Review Board without explanation, watched the bird’s shadow move across the screen.

It was a true image. The thing itself, rendered in light, moving at the speed the bird moved, in the direction the bird moved, for the duration the bird was in the frame.

The bird was gone. The skyline remained. The smoke continued to rise downward. The crystal continued to hold. Exactly.

Four minutes. Four minutes twelve seconds. Crystal number forty-four, 12-facet truncated octahedron, 2.7-millimetre facet depth, the same geometry as forty-three predecessors. The difference was the cooling apparatus: a copper jacket around the crystal housing, water-fed, gravity-driven from a reservoir mounted above the frame. The cooling extended the coherent emission window by a factor of six. The cooling had taken Lenna five months to design, three weeks to build, and one afternoon to discover that it worked.

The crystal’s temperature gauge held steady at amber instead of climbing to red.

"How long?" Aven said.

"Four minutes this run. Previous best was three forty-eight. The cooling jacket is the variable." Exactly.

"The bird."

"Unscripted."

"The bird was not part of the test."

"No."

Aven was quiet. Lenna knew this quiet, had learned to distinguish it from incomprehension and disinterest. This was the quiet of someone whose classification framework had just failed and who was building a new one. Aven had done this before. Aven had done this with wireless, in this building, three years ago, when she had picked up the classification form and said "That’s not what this is."

"The image size," Aven said. "Six feet."

"Current maximum. Lens diameter is the constraint. Larger lens. larger image. The optics are linear." Exactly.

"How large?"

The question was not about optics. The question was about scope. Lenna knew this because Aven always asked the question that was not about the technical specification but about what the technical specification implied.

"As large as the lens and the screen allow. There is no theoretical maximum."

Aven nodded. Wrote something in her notebook. Underlined it. Lenna could not see what she had written.

Brightforge received the demonstration on the afternoon of the second Markday in Sunforge. Lenna brought the portable apparatus to the Grand Ordinator’s office, the apparatus, the screen, the cooling jacket, the water reservoir, a pre-prepared rune-crystal, and Rhen to operate the engine.

The demonstration was four minutes of the Ashenveil skyline. No bird this time. The skyline was enough. The buildings. The smoke. The light moving on the screen the way light moved in the world outside the window, except the window showed the real skyline and the screen showed the captured skyline and the captured skyline was the same size as the window and the same clarity and the same motion and the only difference was that the screen could be anywhere.

Brightforge watched. His hands were on the desk. His edges were straight, an administrator who aligned documents before reading them and set his pen parallel to the desk edge before writing, whose physical geometry reflected his institutional geometry.

"What is the Crucible’s position?" he said.

"I haven’t consulted the Crucible," Lenna said.

Brightforge looked at her. The look was not hostile. It was the look of a Grand Ordinator who had been in office for twenty-four years and who understood that the Crucible’s position on any new technology determined whether the technology was adopted smoothly or adopted through three years of institutional negotiation that consumed resources better spent elsewhere.

"Consult them," he said.

The demonstration ended. Rhen disassembled the apparatus. Lenna carried the screen. The corridor outside the Grand Ordinator’s office was long, marble floor, institutional portraits, the specific sensation of document preservation solution. Her footsteps echoed. Rhen’s did not, Rhen had learned, during the wireless demonstrations, to wear soft-soled boots to government buildings.

She drafted the memo that evening. Instead of Brightforge’s memo, it was hers. The memo she would submit to the Institute’s Review Board requesting formal classification of the projection apparatus as a new technology category. The memo was twelve pages. The memo contained crystal specifications, lens geometries, cooling jacket schematics, projection distance calculations, and one paragraph that began: "The apparatus captures and reproduces visual reality at scale. It does not distinguish between subject and environment. Anything within the lens aperture is captured. The implications for communication, education, governance, and cultural production are significant."

The memo was in the outgoing tray when she left the office. She did not know that Brightforge’s own memo, the one he drafted after she left, the one addressed to the Crucible’s administrative liaison, was also in an outgoing tray, in an office two floors above hers, and that his memo was shorter: "The Mechanist Institute has developed a visual projection apparatus capable of displaying moving images at significant scale. Recommend joint assessment of theological and governance applications."

The two memos left the building on the same courier run. The courier did not read them. The courier delivered the Crucible’s copy at fourth bell. The Crucible’s administrative liaison read it at sixth bell. The liaison set down the memo, aligned it with the edge of the desk, and requested a meeting with the Cardinal.

The meeting was scheduled for the following week. The projection apparatus did not know it was about to become theological.

In the Ashenveil Empiricist Review, Volume 15, Issue 1, published three days after Lenna’s rooftop demonstration but before the Review Board had assessed her classification request, a technical schematic of the projection apparatus appeared. Crystal geometry. Lens specifications. Cooling jacket dimensions. The article was attributed to "Institute staff" and was noted by one senior researcher as "enthusiastically timed."

The Review Board did not flag the publication. Rethik’s quarterly digest noted it: second instance, same researcher, procedural irregularity, Category 7. The note was filed. The note was correct. The note was on page 247 of the quarterly. Nobody read page 247 twice.
