The southern ocean was not a battlefield for men. It was a dark, heaving expanse of crushing pressure and unpredictable violence, where the true powers of the world moved unseen beneath the waves.

Admiral Kaelen of the Kesseth Hegemony stood on the deck of his flagship, the Tidebreaker, staring out at the blockade line. Fifty heavy galleons, reinforced with deep-sea ironwood and armed with aether-cannons, formed an unbroken wall across the primary shipping lanes connecting the Dominion to the southern archipelagos.

For two years, they had strangled Zephyr’s maritime trade. The Dominion’s navy was small, focused on coastal defense rather than blue-water projection. They had tried twice to break the line with their new steam-powered ironclads, and both times the Kesseth fleet had driven them back with superior numbers and heavy bombardment.

But Kaelen was not looking at the horizon for ironclads. He was looking at the water itself.

"Sonar readings are clear, Admiral," the ship’s augur reported, his hands resting on a large, humming crystal sphere on the command deck. "No movement within ten nautical miles. The deep trench is silent."

Kaelen grunted. tightening the collar of his heavy naval coat against the biting wind. The Arbiter had provided them with the augur crystals. a ’gift’ to help Kesseth maintain the blockade. It was a proxy war. and Kaelen knew it. Kesseth was bleeding the Dominion on the Arbiter’s behalf. It stopped.

"Keep the watch tight," Kaelen ordered. "The Iron Sovereign won’t let his trade routes remain closed forever. He’s planning something."

He had heard the rumors from the north. The war with Vaelthyr had ended in a sudden, unexpected ceasefire. The Dominion’s massive industrial engine was now free to turn its full attention south.

Suddenly, the augur crystal on the deck shrieked—a high, piercing tone that shattered the calm of the morning.

"Admiral!" the augur shouted, recoiling from the sphere as it flared with violent red light. "Massive displacement detected! Directly beneath the center of the blockade line! Depth is... it’s ascending from the abyssal zone. Speed is impossible!"

"Sound general quarters!" Kaelen roared, drawing his cutlass. "All ships, prepare for evasive maneuvers! Load heavy aether-shot!"

The warning bells began to clang furiously across the fleet. Men scrambled across the decks. hauling on rigging. loading the heavy cannons. But there was no enemy on the horizon to shoot at. The threat was coming from straight down. Exactly.

The ocean beneath the center of the blockade line—a cluster of five heavy galleons—suddenly bulged upward, forming a massive, unnatural dome of dark water.

Then, the ocean exploded.

A creature of unimaginable scale breached the surface. It was a serpent, its body thicker than the widest galleon in the fleet, covered in iridescent, overlapping scales that shimmered like forged steel. Its head was a nightmare of jagged spines and a maw large enough to swallow a ship whole.

It was the Sovereign’s Sea Serpent.

The sheer kinetic force of its emergence created a localized tidal wave that picked up the five galleons at the center of the line and tossed them like children’s toys. Three of the ships shattered instantly, their heavy ironwood hulls snapping under the immense stress, spilling hundreds of screaming sailors into the churning water.

"Fire!" Kaelen screamed, gripping the rail of the Tidebreaker as the ship pitched violently in the massive wake. "All ships, fire at will!"

The remaining Kesseth galleons opened up, a deafening barrage of aether-cannons lighting up the gray morning. The heavy shot slammed into the serpent’s scales, exploding in flashes of brilliant blue light.

The serpent didn’t even flinch.

It turned its massive head. Glowing, reptilian eyes locked onto the nearest galleon. It lunged with a terrifying speed that defied its mountainous bulk. Its jaws clamped violently amidships, sending the deafening crack of splintering ironwood echoing across the chaotic water. With a single brutal twist of its neck, the serpent tore the galleon in two and dragged the burning wreckage beneath the frothing surface.

"Gods above," the augur whispered, staring at the crystal sphere, which was now vibrating so violently it threatened to shatter. "Admiral... the displacement reading isn’t dropping. It’s... it’s generating a localized current."

Kaelen looked back at the water. A massive whirlpool was forming where the serpent had submerged, a terrifying vortex that was pulling the surrounding ships toward its center.

The Sea Serpent wasn’t just a physical beast. It was a manifestation of Zephyr’s domain over the ocean. It was controlling the water itself.

"Hard to starboard!" Kaelen shouted to the helmsman. "Break the line! Get us out of the vortex pull!"

It was a rout. The impenetrable Kesseth blockade, which had held the line for two years through superior firepower and naval discipline, was disintegrating in minutes. The ships were desperately trying to flee, firing wildly into the water, their discipline shattered by the sheer, overwhelming terror of fighting a divine weapon.

The serpent breached again, this time rising directly beneath a fleeing galleon. The ship was launched fifty feet into the air, spinning end over end before crashing back down into the waves, instantly destroyed.

Kaelen watched the destruction with a cold, hollow certainty settling in his gut. This was not a battle. This was an execution. The Iron Sovereign was sending a message.

"Admiral," the helmsman yelled, struggling to keep the wheel steady as the Tidebreaker caught the edge of the whirlpool. "We’re breaking free! We have the wind!"

"Signal the fleet to scatter," Kaelen ordered, his voice dead. "Tell them to make for the home ports. The blockade is broken."

As the Tidebreaker desperately sailed away from the slaughter, Kaelen looked back one last time. The Sea Serpent was coiled on the surface, surrounded by the burning wreckage of the Kesseth navy. It raised its massive head and let out a soundless roar—a vibration that carried through the water and the air, vibrating in Kaelen’s chest.

It was a declaration of absolute maritime supremacy.

In the Ministry of Whispers, hundreds of miles away, Vrenn Myrvalis read the telegraph dispatch that had just come in from the southern coastal watchtowers.

He adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses and carefully filed the paper into a specific folder on his immaculate desk. The report was concise: the Kesseth blockade had been completely annihilated in less than twenty minutes. The Sea Serpent had returned to the deep trench. The shipping lanes were clear.

Vrenn picked up a separate piece of parchment. It was a pre-drafted diplomatic missive, written a week ago, addressed to the leadership of the Kesseth Hegemony. It politely offered them a choice: sign a formal, binding peace treaty acknowledging the Dominion’s absolute control over the southern shipping lanes, or prepare for the Sea Serpent to visit their coastal cities next.

Vrenn signed the bottom of the missive with his neat, precise signature.

Espionage is subtle, Vrenn thought, sealing the envelope with dark red wax. But sometimes, there is no substitute for simply dropping a monster on the enemy’s head.

He handed the envelope to a waiting courier. The war in the south was over. Now. the real work of managing the peace began. He paused.
