The Grey Rat's Demon Path
Chapter 183 - 165-166: Profiting from Chaos, Dust-Sealed MemoriesChapter 183: Chapter 165-166: Profiting from Chaos, Dust-Sealed Memories
Yu Lulu’s captivating eyes darted toward Xu Chang’an, her gaze filled with tenderness.
"What a shame... Fellow Daoist Mo!"
Xu Chang’an let out a long sigh.
"Indeed."
Yu Lulu seemed a little down as well.
Yu Lulu had known Mo Siyi for far longer than she had known Xu Chang’an. After nearly twenty years, their relationship wasn’t exceptionally close, but it was still a long-standing acquaintance.
But now that he was gone just like that, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness.
As the two demons were lost in their melancholy thoughts, a flash of light appeared. Several figures materialized outside Shuyun Peak.
"We are the Law Enforcement Demons from Peacock Mountain! Please disable the Array Restriction! We must conduct an inspection."
Yu Lulu instinctively glanced at Xu Chang’an.
’It was just like this a moment ago!’
Although she knew it was unlikely to be a trick this time, Yu Lulu’s heart still pounded with lingering fear.
"Let them in,"
Xu Chang’an said with a chuckle.
He even recognized one of the demons outside.
The Earth Bear Demon, who had been something of a patron to him for many years.
At his word, Yu Lulu disabled the Array Restriction.
The demons from Peacock Mountain landed.
"Grey Rat!"
the Earth Bear Demon called out in greeting.
"Fellow Daoist Huang Stone!"
Xu Chang’an returned the greeting with a cupped-fist salute.
Huang Stone was the Earth Bear Demon’s name.
As a trusted member of the Peacock Princess’s Direct Lineage, the Earth Bear Demon’s Cultivation was at the Peak of Mid-stage Foundation Establishment, just one step away from becoming a Top-tier Great Demon.
The demons conducted a routine inquiry, asking for a general account of what had just happened.
"If Gray Rat Alchemist hadn’t been so vigilant and seen through their plot, we would have been tricked into opening the Array. If that had happened, I’m afraid we would’ve been more likely dead than alive!"
Yu Lulu said, patting her chest in relief.
"It seems we have Grey Rat to thank."
Huang Stone responded noncommittally, his gaze shifting to Yu Lulu.
Her Black Veil was gossamer-thin, and as she raised a hand, a hint of crimson was visible through the fabric.
Huang Stone’s breathing grew a little heavier.
"Fellow Daoist Huang Stone, I wonder... how are our fellow daoists on Cloud Sea Peak faring?"
Yu Lulu asked, feigning casualness as she subtly moved a little closer to Huang Stone.
"Of the five peaks, the fifth peak—this one—was protected by its Array. Besides some damage to the Array itself, the losses weren’t too great. The worst hit was the third peak. A Great Demon had already infiltrated it and worked with the attackers from the inside. None of our fellow daoists on the third peak were spared."
"The first peak also suffered a terrible blow; only a single daoist was lucky enough to survive. And..."
"..."
Huang Stone went on and on.
Yu Lulu’s eyes shimmered, her expression one of utter admiration.
Xu Chang’an watched it all unfold but said nothing.
...
"Is there anything else to add?"
The Peacock Princess stood on Yunhai Summit, gazing at the devastated peaks as she asked coolly.
"Your Highness, that is all."
The Elk Demon, Sherri, looked slightly pale.
She had just narrowly escaped death’s door.
"Very well. You are dismissed."
"Yes, Your Highness!"
A fresh breeze swept across Yunhai Summit, rustling Chu Yunrou’s hair and carrying a light, refreshing scent.
At the same time, it stirred memories she had intentionally sealed away.
The wound on her chest seemed to ache once more.
"Golden Lion..."
Chu Yunrou’s gaze was deep and distant.
Dressed in her Feathered Robe, standing on the summit, she looked like a Fairy who had descended to the mortal realm.
Clouds suggest her dress, flowers her face,
Spring wind strokes the rail, dew-drops embrace.
If not on the Mount of Many Jades seen,
Then she must be at the Marble Terrace, under moonlight’s sheen.
...
The routine questioning from Peacock Mountain didn’t take long.
However, the subsequent conversation between Huang Stone and Yu Lulu dragged on for some time.
It was obvious Huang Stone was quite interested in Yu Lulu.
Yu Lulu, for her part, took the initiative and employed a few of her wiles.
It wasn’t Xu Chang’an’s place to comment on the matter.
Besides, it was hard to say who was the hunter and who was the prey.
For Huang Stone to have distinguished himself among the countless demons on Peacock Mountain and become one of the Peacock Princess’s trusted subordinates...
...meant he wasn’t as simple as he appeared.
After the assault, the losses on Cloud Sea Peak were staggering.
Huge swathes of the mountain had collapsed, and the Spirit Garden Fruit Garden was severely damaged.
The Magical Combat between the many Great Demons had left scars all across the landscape.
One glance was enough to see that Cloud Sea Peak was a ruin.
Shuyun Peak, on the other hand, was relatively fine. The Array was heavily damaged, but the mountain’s structure and ley lines were otherwise intact.
Still, restoring it would take some effort.
After seeing off the demons from Peacock Mountain, Xu Chang’an excused himself, claiming he needed to meditate and compose himself, and returned to Gray Rat Cave.
Inside his Secluded Meditation Chamber, Xu Chang’an activated the Array Restriction.
He then took out a pile of Storage Bags.
He had hidden them carefully in his cave dwelling beforehand to avoid them being found during Peacock Mountain’s inspection.
He had slain a Peacock Demon, a Horned Sheep Demon, a Stone Bear Demon, and a Giant Elephant Demon—a total of four Great Demons.
The Horned Sheep Demon had apparently done some robbing of its own, as it carried two extra Storage Bags.
The Stone Bear Demon also had an extra Storage Bag, which likely belonged to the Big-horned Sheep Spirit, Mo Siyi.
Now, by a turn of fate, it had all ended up in Xu Chang’an’s hands.
Opening the Storage Bags one by one, Xu Chang’an began to take stock of his loot.
The haul was incredibly bountiful, far exceeding Xu Chang’an’s expectations.
All told, there were over one hundred thousand Demon Stones alone!
Some of the Demon Stones must have been freshly looted from Cloud Sea Peak.
Not to mention all the other miscellaneous treasures, the greatest prize was the containment-type Quasi-Magical Treasure: the Cyan Jade Bowl.
He had also acquired a Tier Two High Grade Demon Talisman Master’s legacy, a Tier Two Middle Grade Puppet Master’s legacy, and a Quasi-Third Tier Array legacy!
Furthermore, the Stone Bear Demon’s great axe was excellent, a top-quality piece even among Supreme-grade Magical Artifacts.
Elixirs, Ore, Spirit Plants and Medicine...
The sheer quantity of it all was immense!
’This should be enough!’
A joyous expression spread across Xu Chang’an’s face.
The risks he had taken had not been in vain.
