「That afternoon.」

Yvonne Lowell stood on the platform with her arms crossed, watching the trainees spar in the mud pit below. Her brows tightened as she cut them off. "All of you, stop."

Everyone immediately let go of each other and stood at attention, looking up at Yvonne Lowell.

Having rolled around in the mud pit, everyone was caked in mud from head to toe. They were a filthy sight no matter how you looked at it.

"I told you to spar. What do you think you’re doing? Patting each other like a bunch of monkeys? Have you all devolved? Learned how to groom each other and pick lice? Are you afraid you’ll actually hurt someone? Is this your interpretation of ’pulling your punches’?"

Since they were sparring against members of other squads, it was inevitable that some of them would be matched against the women of Snow Phoenix.

And so, this group of men might have looked the part, all full of bluster, but they were secretly pulling their punches.

Yvonne Lowell looked at Summer Quinn. "Summer Quinn, evaluate your opponent’s performance. Were you satisfied?"

"Reporting, Instructor! I think he performed terribly. I’m not satisfied at all!" Summer Quinn took a half step forward, her dissatisfaction obvious.

"Then state your reasons for saying that. Loudly."

"Report! He went easy on me. I don’t think he took me seriously as an opponent. This isn’t some chivalrous act of ’sparing the fairer sex,’ and I don’t need him to do it. I don’t feel any gratitude toward him. In fact, I feel humiliated!"

Yvonne Lowell glanced at the other eleven female trainees. Though none of them spoke, the expressions on their faces clearly showed they felt the same as Summer Quinn.

She looked down at them, her tone icy. "You are the elite. And what are they, if not the same? The very fact that these twelve women are here proves that their abilities are in no way inferior to any one of you. They might even be better."

"Moreover, they endure the same training regimen as you every single day. Has a single one of them ever talked about quitting? Has a single one of them ever failed to complete a training assignment? Never! In fact, some of them perform even better than you! All twelve of them don’t need you to hold back, and they look down on you for it!"

"I’m not trying to pit you against each other. But on the battlefield, there is no gender, only the honor of our nation. Out there, who the fuck is going to care about the differences between men and women? Who is going to ’spare the fairer sex’?"

"What, if another country attacks us with a unit of female soldiers, are you going to be so afraid of hurting them that you’ll intentionally miss your shots? Or are you going to desert your post and let our own women take your place?"

"When you’re sent on a mission, do you first have to check with your superiors about the enemy’s gender? Or before a firefight, are you going to grab a megaphone and negotiate with the other side, telling them they have to send out their men?!"

"I know that hearing this, you’re probably thinking I’m twisting logic and making fallacious arguments. Because these are our own people, you can’t compare this to a real battle."

"Tch, that’s bullshit! This isn’t you being soft-hearted. It’s an insult to your opponent. More than that, it’s irresponsible—to your opponent, to yourself, and to your teammates. This kind of behavior is just plain moronic."

"And don’t give me any crap about the disparity in strength between men and women. Let me tell you something: I was only sixteen when I earned the codename ’Number 1’!"

"How many instructors have drilled it into you, time and time again, to never judge a book by its cover? Did all that advice go in one ear and out the other?!"

"Three years ago, what happened to Eagle Squad on the Southwest border is a perfect cautionary tale. Have you all forgotten it completely?! Or are you trying to become the next Eagle Squad?!"

Three years ago, Eagle Squad had been established for less than a year, but they boasted the highest mission success rate of any squad.

Quentin Kane was the captain back then. That time, the entire squad went to the Southwest to destroy a drug den hidden in the mountains.

(As for who Quentin Kane is, see Chapter 31. He’s the guy who opened the private kitchen.)

There weren’t many people, but their production volume was enormous.

Worried that the sound of a helicopter would alert the enemy, they had to take a detour and approach the mountain from the far side of a village.

They had just reached halfway up the mountain when they encountered a brother and sister gathering herbs. The sister had apparently fallen and sprained her ankle; her brother was helping her limp down the mountain.

Driven by a soldier’s duty, Quentin Kane sent two of his squad members to help.

During their conversation, the boy said, seemingly offhandedly, "Sirs, you must live up on the mountain, right? It seems like we haven’t seen you come down in a long time. So you were away and just got back."

Upon hearing this, the squad members quickly asked for more details.

The boy said he knew where the hideout was and even offered to lead them there.

Sounds like a ridiculous plot, doesn’t it? Yes, anyone would say so. But standing before them at that moment were two seemingly harmless people—fellow countrymen who shared their blood.

The members of Eagle Squad were naturally overjoyed, but out of concern for the siblings’ safety, they only had the boy describe the general direction. They then had someone escort the pair safely down the mountain before continuing on.

As a result, they walked right into an ambush and traps along the path. Attacked from both the front and rear, nine of them were captured. Only one managed to escape, but not before taking a bullet to the arm.

They were taken to the enemy’s main base, and there, they saw that ’brother and sister’ again.

To be precise, they were mother and son. It was just that both of them had innocent, youthful faces that had deceived everyone.

In the main base, they were actually minor leaders. Their harmless facade was gone, replaced by hideous, hateful expressions. When it came to torturing the soldiers, they were more vicious than anyone.

How absurd. The very people they had risked their lives to protect were the ones who delivered the most fatal blow from behind.

There, they were subjected to inhuman torture. And those demons deliberately kept them barely alive, refusing to grant them the release of death.

After hastily staunching the bleeding, the escaped squad member immediately contacted his superiors to call for reinforcements. The ones who went were Yvonne Lowell and her team.

The elimination mission was completed, and the group of heavily wounded soldiers was successfully rescued and brought back to the country.

But after the ten of them recovered, they either left the service or transferred to civilian posts. And so, Eagle Squad ceased to exist.

...

Looking at the faces below, all overwhelmed with shame, Yvonne Lowell felt not a shred of guilt or pity.

She was no saint; her experiences had forged a coldness deep within her bones.

But now that they were her subordinates, she had a responsibility to them.

Since she carried the title of ’Number 1’ given to her by her superiors, she could clean up their messes time and time again. But she was unwilling to, and she hoped that day would never come. More than anything, she didn’t want a repeat of what happened three years ago.

"I have you spar so you can improve together. By going easy on each other now, you are, in effect, handing the enemy a knife to kill them."

"Of course I know every punch, every kick, every throw hurts. But while your bodies may fall, the backbone of an Aurelian soldier must stand tall. Since you chose this profession, you’d better be worthy of the uniform you wear!"
