As a way to try to deal with the Magic Affinity problem, a mysterious scientist came up with a method that could technically ’reset’ the innate affinity of a mage and allow them to take on a new affinity! This was during the time when magical experiments were still very common, and there were no laws that stopped mages from doing whatever they wanted, so the mysterious scientist was able to kidnap many young mage children, and he experimented on them to try and see if he could change their affinity!
And surprisingly, it had actually worked. The scientist was able to replace the affinity of three children who were lucky enough to survive the experiments. But those children hadn’t lived very long afterwards, since their bodies were constantly attacked by the foreign affinity! Trying to replace the affinity of a mage was like pouring acid into a container built for water! The new affinity would easily eat away at the mage’s body until they died a painful death!
But that experiment had taken place a very long time ago! Centuries before the demihumans war and before Percy even came to this world! Percy had only learned about it during his journey around this world because he was able to decipher some research documents that he found in a faraway kingdom. Percy didn’t think that anyone in Andura would know about that experiment, and even if they knew about it, Percy didn’t think that they would be capable of replicating it at all!
Percy immediately asked.
"Did the boy survive the experiment?"
Alpha frowned.
"The woman said he did, but according to her, he was no longer alive. She said, ’he has fulfilled the great mission for the dawn of Ragnarok’. We couldn’t really understand what it meant. But since the cult is made up of primarily demihumans, I think it has something to do with you, master."
Percy hummed as he took a book from the shelf and turned it around before putting it back in another section. Although this cult story was very random, Percy couldn’t stop his mind from travelling towards the recent incident that happened in the upstairs library and what it could mean! Was it possible that this case was somehow related to the death of those students? Percy had already asked Rita to look into the use of Synchronization to find out whether or not any of the students had used it on Hildegard. But if it turned out that Synchronization was actually used, then wouldn’t that mean that this Ragnarok organization was most likely behind this entire case?
Percy frowned as he looked up at the full moon shining through the sunroof, and Alpha waited patiently as he ran through his thoughts. Finally, after a few seconds, Percy turned back to Alpha and spoke in a calm tone.
"I need you to find out more about this Ragnarok organization. Let the other phantoms continue looking for the time-based cult while you focus on this. I think they might have been responsible for an attack that happened here recently."
Alpha felt her eyes narrow in anger once she learned that Ragnarok was responsible for an attack on this academy! This school had been built by her master, and it represented his legacy! Anyone who would dare to insult her master’s legacy deserved to die!
Alpha went to a knee and bowed her head!
"I will find out everything I can about them, Master. You have my word."
Percy let out another amused sigh before patting Alpha on the head:
"Good girl."
Alpha’s cheeks reddened desperately once she heard this, and she leaned into Percy’s touch for a moment before she stood and stepped back to leave. Percy spoke up before she could open the dimensional door.
"Next time, bring the rest of the group as well. Let’s have a family dinner."
Alpha felt a rush of excitement go through her body once she heard this, and she nodded happily! Alpha knew all the others would also be excited to see Percy and Rita again, so she couldn’t wait for it!
"Goodbye, master."
Percy nodded with a smile and watched as Alpha opened the door and fell through. Once she was gone, Percy turned to the side and spoke into the darkness.
"You can come out now."
A silent curse came from somewhere up on the balcony, and a figure slowly appeared from thin air and slithered into view. Hildegard had an embarrassed look on her face as she faced him, and she hugged her hands around her body as she looked at the ground shamefully.
Percy spoke up with an amused look on his face.
"It’s not very nice to spy on people."
Hildegard flinched slightly.
"S-Sorry."
Hildegard hadn’t actually intended to spy on Percy just now! Hildegard had come out to stretch her tail, and when she was heading back to her room, she heard the voices coming from here. Hildegard saw Percy speaking to a woman that she had never seen before, so Hildegard allowed her curiosity to get the better of her, and she used the [Camouflage] spell to try and get a good look at what was happening!
Percy hummed curiously when he saw the remorseful look on Hildegard’s face, and he just turned to continue moving books on the shelf before saying:
"Come down and help me with this, Hildegard."
Hildegard was a little surprised to hear that order, but she knew better than to refuse it, and so she slithered down the stairs and headed towards Percy. Percy handed a book to Hildegard, and he told her to put it on another shelf.
"Find any book that isn’t in its right section and put it back. It shouldn’t be too hard to figure out."
Hildegard nodded obediently, and she began to work as well. The two of them stayed silent, and only the sound of books being shuffled in and out of shelves echoed in the room. But finally, after a while, Hildegard asked.
"Is that woman your servant? She kept calling you master."
Percy smiled.
"No, it’s not like that. She’s like my daughter."
"O-Oh... I see."
Hildegard went back to working quietly, but she suddenly spoke up again a few seconds later.
"Uhm.. I never got to say sorry."
Percy raised a brow calmly.
"What for?"
"For uhm... that day. The first day we met. I was a little rude when I just walked away from the conversation like that. I’m sorry."
Percy chuckled in amusement when he heard this! Percy couldn’t believe Hildegard was still thinking about something like that!
"You don’t need to apologise. I shouldn’t have dismissed your opinion about Verati. You were right to be annoyed."
Hildegard blushed slightly as she was reminded of her adoration for Verati, and she put another book in its rightful place before she spoke up.
"I... I know it’s weird. For someone like me to like Verati so much. People always think I hate him because of how my life is."
"I don’t think it’s weird at all. Your race or magic affinity shouldn’t have anything to do with what you love or hate."
Percy turned to Hildegard and said this seriously, and Hildegard was so stunned by the intensity of those words that she simply stared at him in surprise for a few long seconds! But then Percy looked away, and Hildegard snapped back to reality, and she blushed while turning back to the books. There was a silly smile growing on Hildegard’s face that showed just how happy Percy’s words made her, and the next time Hildegard spoke, it was in a much friendlier tone.
"What about you, Mr. Percival? You don’t seem to like Verati very much."
Percy shrugged.
"It’s neither here nor there. I don’t really dislike him either."
