Hildegard put her hands together and continued speaking.
"You have to believe me, Mr Percy. I didn’t want to kill anybody. I... I’ve never trained with my abilities before. My hellfire is completely new to me, and the only thing I was told is that using my magic opens the Gates of Gehenna and causes things to burn. I know that sounds like an excuse, but it’s the truth. I don’t know if what happened back there was because of the boy that touched me or if it was my magic acting up."
Percy put his hand on Hildegard’s shoulder when he saw that she was starting to get worked up, and he told her to relax. Hildegard was breathing a little heavily, and she looked like she was willing to do anything to prove herself to Percy at that moment! But when Hildegard saw the calm look on Percy’s face, she eventually let out a harsh breath, and she forced herself to calm down. Hildegard watched Percy patiently and waited for him to say something, and when he spoke, Hildegard was completely shocked by what she heard.
"I believe you, Hildegard. I don’t think you killed those students either."
Hildegard felt such an intense surge of relief in her heart at that moment that she didn’t even know when tears began to fall from her eyes! Hildegard hiccuped and thanked Percival while cleaning her eyes and Percival just patted her back softly as his mind travelled towards the story he just heard! The boy that touched Hildegard in the library was probably the same boy that Percy had seen lying in a different position from all the other students back when he first entered the library! And if that was the same boy, then there was a very high possibility that what that boy used on Hildegard was actually Synchronization!
But now, the important question was; how did the boy gain the affinity necessary for synchronization?
Hellfire was a very difficult affinity to find! There had only been five known users of Hellfire in the history of the kingdom! Three of them had died in the previous demihumans war. Two of them were killed before Verati was summoned, while the third one was killed by Verati. Hildegard was the fourth one, and the fifth was the Witch of Calamity that had caused carnage across the entire world for thousands of years, a very long time ago! But Percy knew that the chances of anyone finding the Witch of Calamity and getting her to help you with anything were practically zero!
That meant that there had to have been some other way that the boy gained the Hellfire affinity!
’Could it have something to do with the report from Alpha? The one about the Cult of Ragnarok? I know they won’t still be in the same place, but I hope Alpha finds them soon. I think I have some questions for them.’
Percy huffed silently as he had these thoughts, and he finally patted Hildegard’s back a few more times before he told her to go and get some rest! She already had a very busy day, so she needed to get her energy back for tomorrow’s class. Hildegard bowed and thanked Percy for talking to her, and then she left for her room.
....
The next few days in the library went by without any major problems. After the conversation between Percy and Hildegard, everyone in the library suddenly became a lot more comfortable around one another in their daily life. Percy fell back into the regular routine of working in the library during the day and working down in his research lab at night while Hildegard began having afternoon lessons with Rita every day to catch up on the schoolwork she was missing. Since Hildegard was now more comfortable with them, Hildegard started to join the family for all their meals, and she even gave herself the task of doing some of the minor tasks around the library with Lana.
Hildegard spent a total of five days in the library, and with each passing day, Hildegard learned more about the library and the people in it, as well as how to handle most of the tasks around the building. Hildegard learned that Percy was not to be disturbed when he was in his research lab downstairs, and Rita was one of the best cooks in the entire world. Rita and Percy’s bedroom was completely off limits, and even when you hear noises coming from inside the room late at night, you aren’t meant to go anywhere near it!
Hildegard also learned that Lana was one of the most clumsy people in the world, while also being one of the best housekeepers she had ever seen! Lana was able to handle very complicated tasks easily, but sometimes she would make a mistake with a very simple task, and Hildegard would find herself wondering if Lana had been dropped on her head as a child! Hildegard settled into her role as Lana’s helper and assistant for most of the chores around the library, and after helping Lana to take care of some of the magical creatures in the library a few times, Hildegard fell in love with all the magical beasts!
There were so many high-level magical beasts in the library, and Hildegard got to interact with beasts that she would’ve normally never gotten to even see before! The Eldritch monster, Henry, made Hildegard pass out the first time she met it, but after getting used to it, she was able to withstand the Eldritch’s cry with some effort, and she even got to wave to it once! The giant Kraken downstairs was very friendly and Hildegard actually got to pet one of its tentacles during their last meeting! The giant tarantula living in the attic upstairs was also amazing, but Hildegard didn’t really like it because it nearly ate Hildegard the first time they met, thinking that she was food for its thousands of children! Lana had to quickly chase all the spiders back with a fire spell to stop them!
But the beasts that Hildegard fell in love with most of all were the Basilisk couple and their babies in the storage room! Hildegard absolutely adored Martha and Harry! The giant basilisk was a beast of destruction that could level an entire city in less than a day without any effort, but to a Lamia like Hildegard, the Basilisk was basically a distant cousin, and Hildegard bonded with them far more than she did with any of the other creatures!
The beasts had also gotten used to Hildegard’s presence, and now it was normal to see Hildegard bringing food for them together with Lana!
Hildegard did not come out much during the day since she still did not want to be seen by the other students who were visiting the library, so she fell into her own personal routine. Hildegard would spend her days reading or having magical classes with Rita and then she would have a meal with the entire family before moving around at evening and during the night to help Lana feed the magic beasts! Hildegard also did her best to practice her magic spells whenever she was alone in her room, but she couldn’t really do much since she was forbidden from using any magic at all! Hildegard didn’t know that Percy and Rita could sense her using her magic, but both Percy and Rita stayed silent about it since it was just some basic spells she was practicing!
